The Democrats of Monroe county have dow thoroughly organized their party, and wilt spare no effort to secure success. Should they conel ode, before the day of election, that it is impossible to elect their entire county ticket they will then concentrate their trading and swapping, as veil as the expenditure of money, upon an effort to elect their candidate for Clerk. To this end a immense "lie factory" has already been started, and men have been secured to ride out over the county and pour them into the ears of such persons as seem willing to listen.

Republicans should understand the situation. They can only succeed by great efforts and great vigilance, maintained up to the very closing of the polls on election day. Onr opponents are desperate and. unscrupulous, and will stop at nothing to achieve success. If Republicans wish to avert the calamity of a Democratic victory they must work harder than they ever worked before, and most not relax their efforts till the last vote is in, nor their watchfulness till the last vote n counted. Money, fraud and the circulation of stories without foundation, are what we have to fear. We can beat them with legitimate weapons, bat to this end there must be brave, incessant and unflagging effort. m It will not do for Republicans to underestimate the ability and determination of the Democracy of this county to make a vigorous fight from now till the closing of the Dolls. Tbev are nerved nn in W.

persfioo office they want, and office they are determined to have if by any hook or crook they can secure the votes. They are resorting to the most contemptible tactics in the efforts to defeat Wall Browning fr county Clerk, and will not stop at the use of money, whisky or

suae statements in fact they are at it now, as is well known to many. There is a hint of what the Democratic policy will be in river counties of Indiana. On election day Kentucky is expected to do her Any. . Her duty will be to furnish a sufficient number of votes for the Democracy to carry the State for that party.. Will the Republicans of Indiana consent to be voted dowu by these political scums who drift in from a bonier State ? Indiana is Republican, and the great danger that threatens the party uow is from invasion of Kentucky Democrat? who wiH come into the State to spawn Democratic votes. The honest legal voters of Ibis State should see that these villains who peddle cut their franchise for a mess of Democratic pottage, should have no shelter or protection in its borders. It is high time, then, that men

fdiould be selected who have the netrssary qualifications for good ju-

fi, and without regard to party J

alDuations. Louner,

OUR CANDIDATES. Below we give brief sketches of the men who constitute the Monroe County Keputflican ticket, ami ask a perusal of it by the readers of the J Progress. We feel positive that they will lose nothing by comparison with any othec equal number of men in the county, and confidently predict their election, ou tbe 7th of November, to the offices for which they each aspire : D. Wall. Browning;. During the past eight years tho Pi-ogress has had frequent occasions to refer to 1. W. Browning, the candidate for Clerk, by reason of his efficiency and general fitness. As Deputy Clerk ho has performed the largest sharo of tho duties of the office, and has performed thorn so well, s- cheerfully and promptly, as to make friends of all who have come in contact with bin Among penmen ho is acknowledged to bo the most competent record clerk in the State, and it is a great roliof to ono of tho supremo judges to get hold of one of Wall. Browning's transcripts. In the large pension certificate business done in tho county clerk's office, Wall, lias invariably donated his fees and service, amounting to

hundreds of dollars each year, and this

has been in the interest or the widow, tlio OTDBan. and of tho disablod soldier. He is

an untirir.g worker, and like his father

(Wm. r. Browning) is nrst ana last wnorever and whenever there is anything to bo done to forward the cause of Republicanism or charity. Captt. W. M. Alexander, the candidate for Auditor, is known to every man, woman and chi'd in Monroe county as "Mart." As a Deputy Sheriff, and aftervards as Sheriff of the county, he braved the storms and floods of winter and suihrier for years, and was always found to le tho samo genial, accommodating man, no matter what his position or circumstances. There is no politics in Mart's cleverness either, for bo has always been as re-.dy to favor or assist a Democrat as a Repjbiican it was only necessary for him to know that a human being was in distresi or needed a favor, and the favor was granted if it was in Mart. Alexander' power. After serving four yours as Sheriff, he retired from that office with the full indorsement of Democrats and Nationals, as well as Republicans, as the most prompt and efficient officer that had ever filled the position. He was a gallant soldier tr. roughout tho war of the rebellion. "With tho assistance of his friends on the 7tl. of November, ho will duplicate in the Auditor's office, the record he has made as Sheriff. Isaac Claman,

comes frt.m good Republican stock in Richland tp., and although ho has been all bis life armer, he has become somewhat familiar with tbe routine work of the Treasurer s office while acting in tho capacity of collector. Ike ha no enemies, that one oyer heard of, and he will glide into the effice with ease. Ilaj. Silas Crimes, the candilate for Sheriff, has held the office since November, 1880. At the time of his ele:tion he was a Clear Creek township farmer, and a successful one, owing to hard work and close attention to tbe details of his business. When he received the Republican nomination for Sheriff in 1880, the Democracy selected their strongest roan in the person of Jack Dowden, and so confident did they feel that his popularity and extensive acquaintance would pill him through, that many of them bet tbeir clothes and lost One business man -on the north side of tbe square "guessed' five overcoats with as many Democrats who thought it an easy matter to defeat Crimes, and the business man referred to has a change of overcoats almost every day of the week. Silas Grimes responded to President Lincoln's first call for troops, and served till the end of three months. He then promptly reenlisted for tbe war and was elected a Lieutenant; was afterwards made a Captain, and still further on in the war, through meritorious conduct as an officer and a soldier, and having the confidence of his superiors, he was promoted to the

office of Major. He nover failed to make

a march that bis regiment mode, as.d never missed a fight that his company partic

ipated in. He has never failed to perform

his lull duty as Sheriff, and never will. Wm. S. Half,

the candidate for Recorder, is a citizen of

Richland township. He was raised on a

farm but has received a good business cd

u cat ion. During th past two years he

has been deputy postmaster at Ellettsville,

ana is extremely popular wuli all classes,

About November 15tli, Mr. Hull will take

np his residence iff Bloomington, and the

records or Monroe county will then receive bis undivided and careful attention.

Dr. Jag. II. Gaston,

tbe candidate for Coroner, resides in Stan

ford, Van Buren township, and has been a practicing physician since the closo of the

war. As a member of tho 43a regi incut. Dr. Gaston carried a musket in the thick

est of the fight in ono of the battles of 'G3,

ana carries a certificate to tnat effect in the shape of a crippled arm and band.

He is a true, unflinchim: Republican, on

active worker, and will Hold an inquest

over the defeated Democracy on tbe even

ing oi JNovemher 7th. 1H. II. Bnsklrk,

the candidate for Surveyor, is tbe present

incumbent. Sir. UusKirlc is a tanner ol Indian Creek township. Ho is also a st-bool teacher, and hs filled the position of Surveyor with greater satisfaction to infpcoplo throughout tho county than any man who has ever "run the lines." lie also carried a uiirikct during the late "misunderstanding," and there is no misunderstanding as to liuskirk's position ou that or tiny recent contest. David P. Burton, tho candidate for Co'nmisdotior of Iho 1st district, is a farmer of l)e.m Ulos.-om town ship, residing about two miles from tin northwest corner of the township. Mr.

Burton was educated in Bluuapiiigton, and.

is a thorough luiMness man as well ai n successful farmer and stock raiser. John P. IJuri'Cll, of Clear Creek township, the candidate for Commissioner for the 3d di-triet, resides upon a. farm near Ntuiihvillo. lit has always been ono of tho m -1, active energetic and conscientious working Itn publicans in the t township, and will give a good account of himself when the roll is called. Mr. liar roll was also a gallant soldier. Indianapolis Journal : Tin telegraph fraternity of this oily lod, bi death, on Sunday last, one of thuw nun. ber, Thomas M.
