Ohio Republicans TlCTOBIOtS!
Qhto baa shown by the result of
its election oft the 10th, that theextrdvaganieatlmaics made by visionary and fanatical people of the vote that "teniMranee democrats" would give the republican ticket because it stood ap for temperance principles were without foundation. The Progress never has believed that temperance democrats were eager to vote the republican ticket we feel certain bow that we woe correct. The Progress believes, farther that should the democrats have majority ha the next legislature, the proposition to submit the amendments to a vote of the people will be voted down. The Cincinnati Commercial was right, when, several weeks ago, in. response to the oft-repeated assertion of the Cincinnati GaaetUihai.many tem
perance democrats of Ohio would
vote with the republicans, it said : "Nearly all the temperance demo"crats of Ohio, who an on re"publiean moral issues, have mov"ed ever into Kentucky, to be be"yond the reach of temptation to "vote against their old party." On second thought, however, we feel that this may be classed among' the Republican victories, because it is evident that it was Republican votes that changed Ohio from 35,000 Re
publican majority to a plurality of
18,000 for the Democratic ticket. It is reasonable to presume that those Republicans were opposed to -ajy interference with their drinking privileges, and thought it best to say so at the ballot box. The liquor interest is an immense power in Ohio, and a daa-gereus one to tackle, as the result has proved. Bat wont "we temperance democrats'-' give 'em fits in Indiana, on the 7th of November ? Well, we . shall see. In Ohio the question was whether retail liquor dealers should pay achy and county license and be prevented from selling on Sunday. The retail liquor dealers have never paid anything but the Government license in that State. Any man can set up a bar and retail liquor, and as a result every provision store, and many dry eoods stores have little bathrooms attached, and when a good customer comes in they
gave him two or three drinks of
"red-eye." Then he feek rxhrand will purchase three times as ma goods as if be were in bis sober senses. There ae 3,300 places in Cincinnati alone where liquor is retailed. So that it may be understood that when these men (many of dte Republicans) were asked to vote a licence tax on thecMelves they would naturally obfeet it is hawaa tnre. Hon. W. R. Harrison, better
known as "Rip" Harrison, and
Judge K. Li. Uottey, will make a
canvas.-) of the county for submission of the amendments, beginning at Stiuesville on the night ot the 18th. They wjll speak at Simpson's Chapel, Ellettsville, Stanford, Center School House, Harrodsburg,

The republican party says they shall have that privilege without any restrictions or prejudice that is, they shall be voted on at a special election, so that politics may not enter into the result. The Democratic leaders are opposed to this, and will do all in their power to prevent it. Daily Courier, Columbus, O. : Charley Shay's Quincuplexal. The immense crowd at the Opera House fully endorsed this great entertainment as the "Boss" Hall Show of America. There are so many really attractive and altogether meritorious features of this combination, that a description would prove a very difficult undertaking. We bad a whole bevy of favorites of both sexes, who said and suns; and danced such funny things, and did all so well, that nil in the house nearly cried with delight. We had the best delineations of burnt cork opera ever seen in this chy. But the acting of the little dogs trained by Charley Shay, took the house by storm. The comical burlesque and pantomime closed the entertainment finally.' Charley Shay's Quincuplexal is the best show, that baa been in Columbus for yean, and oar citizens should not foil to take their but chance to-night and go to see it. m aa Frame Iadiaue Creek. It is known by the Democracy oi the county that Indian Creole was once the banner Democratic township. We always knew as well before the election as afterward, what our majority was. This state of affairs) hat now failed to exist, and why ? For four years we elected John D. Morgan Trustee by about 80 majority, after which his actions were of such a nature, both personally and officially, that he met with condemnation on all bands. The next year we brought out Wesley Kirk, a good citizen, and a life-long Democrat, (be never rated for He. either) but be was defeated by a system of falsehoods, manufactured out of whole cloth, the evening before the convention. This again threw Morgan upon the Democracy as their candidate, and if the election bad gone off the same week, he would have beea defeated by 45 majority, bat again we went to work to aava the party, and voted against our sentiment rather than give np the control of the township trustee's office to a Republican. He, Morgan, was elected with a loss of 47 Democratic votes. Had be served the people judiciously and economically, be might have been in full favor with bis party to-day. But instead of this, what did he do 7 Why, during the year 1877 he charged the township, as the record in the Auditor's office shows, (this is no campaign lie, it is on record) S3 44.00 for the like services that John M. Stephenson, the former trustee, charged but $187.00! Toor correspondent asked Mr. Stephenson bow this was. He owns that he did not know as to Morgan's services, bnt as to himself be said that he charged all that the law would allow. Morgan's charge is not quite "ittbtimis" as much, but it is very near twicb as much as Mr. Stephensons. IMHAIT CkKIK DxMOCBACT.
REPtTBUCAK speakixb. Senator W. B. F. TREAT will speak in Simpson's Chapel, Washington tp., Thursday, Oct. 19, at 1 o'clock p.m., and in Hiadoatan the same day, at night. Prof. J. A. WOODBURN will speak in Smithville, Friday night, Oct. 20th. The County Candidates will be present at the meetings.
C. C Matson, Democratic candidate for Congress, bemoans the fact that laborers receive bnt a dollar a day for their labor, and that that dollar could buy but five pounds of bacon. The speaker did not go on and explain what a laborer waste with thirty pounds of bacon a week, nor just how the Republican party could be held responsible for the price of that commodity. A dollar will bay ten gallons of coal oil, but no man wants sixty gallons of that staff a week. It wiU buy twenty yards of calico, but, unless he has an inordinately large family, he will not require one hundred and twenty yards of prints to carry bin from Monday morning to Saturday night. Mr. Matsoa's argument is as dem
agogical as those of a man in this
county who bemoans the building of roads and the expense it entails, the first letter of whose name is R. A. Folk.

Was it on tbe Square T Mr. Editor There have been some queer transactions in Monroe county, during the past year, and one of the queerest of these I will briefly relate:
Last winter a contract was en
tered into between the Auditor and
the county commissioners to hunt up back taxes. In many cases
where taxes were found, a proposition was made to accept a part and
call it quits. John W. Davis was
notified that he owed $700, yet he was told to pay $200 and it would
be sufficient. Mrs. Amanda Hughes
was notified that she owed $196,
but that 850 would fix it. Now if
these people were owing that amount, tell us who had authority to
compromise with them ? Does the
county Treasurer ever offer to take
$20 when he tells you your taxes amount to 50 ? This is merely an introductory paragraph, with more to follow.. Perky Tr. Lourdes, of which we have beard so much of late years, stands on the confines of Bigorre and Beam. In the middle ages it derived importance from its castle,
deemed impregnable. This stands
on an isolated eminence, which rises almost perpendicularly from the waters oi: the Cave. The mineral waters of the hot wells are much vaunted, but most of the cures are asserted to be made by a simple spring of cold water. The grotto, whose roof is bung witb oblations of the "perfect cures," in the form of crutches, splints, and bandages, is on the river bank, about ten minutes wal k from the town. The level ground betwixt it and the stream
has been paved, and tbe interior of
the grouo turned into a chapel. Devotees, from Duchesses to dairymaids, kneel against the railing which protect the chapel.
Lewis R. Jones, a wealthy
Stanford, Ky., farmer, strangled to
death while trying to swallow a glass of whisky. It is understood that Mr. Jones let several drops of water fall into it by accident. A Wisconsin farmer was seen
stopping up the chinks in his di
lapidated log house. A big snake had cra wled in and gone to bed with him on the previous night, and he had disliked it. Sheep killing dogs. Mr. J. R. Mead, of Sedgwick co., Kansas, who hnti resided on the frontier for 25 years says : Buy a drachm bot
tle of chrystalized strychnia (it costs 35 cents) pulverise it : take the car
cass of your sheep, with the pelt
on, and witb a rope around the horn of your saddle, drag it three
or lour miles about your range,
just at evening, occasionally drop
ping a bait on the trail upon which has been rubbed the thirtieth part
of the contents of the bottle, and
on leaving the carcass dose it liberally. In the morning ride over the trail and look for the dead wolves. If this method is generally adopted, there will not be a wolf or stray
dog alive in the county by January
next, unless tbey come in from elsewhere, and the pelts of the wolves, if found, would pay the expense. By a method similar to the above, tbe writer, in early days, killed seventy wolves itt one night. Farm-.

One is a Coney Island hotel, others are hotels at Long Branch and Atlantic City, a number are private summer residences, and the main structure has recently beea taken down, some oi it being used for stations on the Pennsylvania railroad, and the remainder for an iron mill in Pittsburg. Question. Who decides whether you may vole for or against prohibition ? -flHioer. The Legislature. Quf9. Who are candidates for the Legislature in Monroe county. Am. John Graham, Democrat, and John Kolsapple, National. Qaes. A re they for or against the submission of the amendments. Ant. They both declare themselves in favor of and pludge themselves to vote for the submitting of tbe amendments to a vote of the people? A 8 the Republicans have no candidate for Represtntative, it would seem that the National aud Demo
crat parties will have tbe honor of
deciding the prohibition question for Monroe county.
Charley Shay's Quincuplcxal Troupe will appear in Mendelssohn Hall, Wednesday night. The troupe
has been on the road a number of
years and is well-known in tbe larger cities, where it is liberally patronized. It is to be hoped that the city will protect these people from insult and annoyance from the hoodlums that are always to he found in Bloomington Hall entertainments. They should not be required to pay license if they are are to receive no protection. We cannot understand bow anti-submission can enter into the contest in Monroe county. The legislature decides that matter, and the two candidates for the legislature (Graham and Holsapple) have declared themselves in favor of submission. Graham has 800 majority to start with. Fashion, it is said, seriously contemplates tbe wearing of rings in the nose. Should the old dame so decide, tbe streets will be lined with humanity, whose noses contain rings, a la the big Cow, at the County Fair. There is nothing like keeping up with the fashion. t-iai A oorrespondent asks "Will the Ohio election affect tbe election in Indiana V We can not see why it should. Tbe Republican retail liquor dealers of that State were asked to vote a license tax on themselves, and to vote to close their houses oil Sunday. It is not neces
sary to argue the right or wrong of
this Sunday tramc. it was perfectly natural for those men to vote against being taxed or restricted, and they did so. The question in Indiana is, "May the people vote on the amendments ?" The candidates for the Legislature in this county, both say they will vote to give the people an opportunity to vote on the constitutional amendments. So that question would seem to be settled. If the people are not given an opportunity to vote for prohibition, there will be no prohibition, will there ? Many traveling men make it a point to reach Bloomington Saturday so that they may stay over Sunday and get some of Benckert's Twist Bread to eat. A man who cats that bread once will never forget it it is an oasis in the desert of bad bread.
The cheekiest thing in this cheeky a;e is the demand of Frank James that he thould not bo punished as other assassins and outlaws, because ho has voluntarily surrendered. Ho worked at the trade of murder as long as it was not dangerous, and now desires to quit. 3 Cakes Oat Meal Toilet Soap, 10c. Duhn & Co. Strained Honey $1.25 per gallon. Dusn & Co.
