Proposals are now being ad-

vertiiied for tht building of fbor more bridges, by the county commissionersthree over Salt Creek and one over Jack's Defeat in Ellettsvilte.. During tbe past five years a number of expensive bridges have

been built in this county. Bloomington City pays about fot.r-fifths of the taxes of the county, and yet tbe county has built but one bridge

within the city limits the bridge

on South Walnut street, east of the University. The people permit

bridges to be built in all manner of :

isolated places in the county, and

pny for them without a word of ob

jection., and yet when there is a

bridge to bt built in tht city tht money comes directly out of their

pockets. Permanent stone bridges

are needed over tbe creek on 5th,

6th st., and South College Avenue,

and the county thouldpay for Hum,

just as it pays for the numerous

4,000 bridges in obscure localities

on iSalt and Bean. An the people

of Bloomington pay the bulk of

tbe taxes to build bridges, in the

out townships without protest, corn-

men justice, it seems to us, would

suggest tbe propriety of building

bridges on the creeks in Blooming

ton, just as they are built in other portions of the county. What say

you, Jeuow citizens J

Several cases were brought last week to Monroe circuit court for

trial from Bedford, in which N. L.

Hall, C. L. Aley and others contest tbe payment of the narrow guage

railroiid tax. The county treasur

er, James Moore, levied on certain

property, and the owners took pos-

sesriom of it again by replevin.

Judge Herd decided that the tax

duplicate is ia the nature of a writ.

and that property levied on for tax

es is not subject to reple vin. The an

ti-tax people asked for a change of

Judges, and Judge Herd appointed J, F. Pittman. Three casts were

tried ; the first two being decided in favor of Treasurer Moore. In the third case, Bivins vs. Moore,

the jury gave Bivins a judgment fox one dollar and fifty cents. The

fourth will be tried during the pie-

seat week. Persons who desire to take advantage of the accommodation tntin for a trip to any point south, should do so this week, as it will bet the last opportunity. The train will be taken tiff Saturday night. The Democratic county central committee was in session Saturday last, and resolved to hold a oounty convention on the 10th of Jane, to nominate oounty offtgen.
