An exchange contains the following : ''Every paper in the United States ought occasionally to keep the fact before its reader that burnt corn is a certain and speedy cure lor hog cholera. The best way is to make a pile of corn on the colas, effectually scorch it, and then give the affected hogs free access to it.
This remedy was discovered by E. E. JiOok, at the time his distillery
was bornt in Lewistown, Illinois, to
gether with a large lot of store corn, which was so much injured as to be on fie for use, and greedily eaten by
the hogs, several of which were dying daily. After the second day sot a single hog was lost, and the
disease entirely disappeared. The
remedy has been tried in a number of
eases eipce, and has never tailed. The famous Dalrymple fttrm of 75,000 acres in Dakota, is really made np of smaller farms with separate ownerships; but all is under the management of Oliver Dalrymple, who owns 4,000 acres outright,

Prof. Ccraelius Pering was born in De
vonshire, England, in the year 1806, and
died in Louisville Ky., on the 28th of
November, 1881. He emigrated to the
United States in 1832, making Blooming-
ton, loci., nis residence.
It -was in 1837 that the writer of
tbis sketch beeamo acquainted with Frof
C. Bering. He wan then Principal of th
Monroe County Female beminarv, a
flourishing Institution well patronized by
the town rfd county and tho itdjaeent
counties. There are still living in Bloom'
ington many matronly dames, tho young
Indies or those days now mothers and grand mothers, and in no respect inferior ta accomplishments and general education
to the vounti ladies or tne present genera
tton, who still remember with great affec
tion and esteem tneir much loved lormer
teacher. 1 are sure that they with one
voice would neanny testify to tne urbanity, the kindness and excellence and apt
ness to teach, too, or him woo had so
much to do with the moulding of their
youthful minds.
Mr. Faring was an accomplished gentleman, a man of superior natural abilities
and well trained. He was an excellent
penman. One would have thought that
be had devoted his life to this which he
regarded as a very inferior accomplishment. But it was not limply as a teacher
of writing that he could use his pen, but could and did use it for tho expression of
hi thought f and for the cause of right and for the good of the community in which be lived, and in the defense of the College which in- t'uis early day had its battles to
light, lie was also an artist or no little merit and well read in English and French literature. Mr. Paring took an active part in all the association of the town, which h.id for their object the cultivation of thi? mind. He was the originator of a Phrenological society, for tha discussion of questions relating; to the constitution of tha mind. Perhaps ft will not be regarded by many aow-e-days, much either to Mr. Paring's credit, or to tbese associated with bini, to give Pb rent logy so prominent a place, but it must ha remembered that in tuase day Phrenology, a comparatively new subject, engaged the attention of some of the most distinguished men. This society shortly before Mr. Pering left Bloomiogton for his home In Louisville, in the year 1845, was merged in the Monroe County Lyceum, a society of somewhat similes character but of a wider Held. With regard to Mr. Pering' religious views we cannot speak decidedly. That Mr. Paring was an honest, bcievolont
man, and one who had great reverence for aucred things, and tolerant with regard to other differing with him, an J that he was truly a good man, there can be ne doubt. In the many conversations which the writer had with Mr. P. on religious subjects, though differing widely, there never was anything but kindly feeling if we except one occasion. The different sects of Christians were enumerat
ed by the writer. Mr. Pering immediate-
Iv called nil attention to the omission of the Unitarians : the reply was that he did
sot regard them as Christians. With
much earnestness and sharpness Mr. P. exclaimed, "Where is your Christian charity? I am a Unitarian." The ruffle
was soon over, and perhaps the command to "Judge not that you be not judged" was forgotten by tho one who gave tho offense. We should remember that at tha great Jay men will be judged rather by their deeds than their creeds. "When I was hungry you gave me meat, when thirsty you gave me drink, when sick and in prison ye visited me." Their

and from a true christian spirit are regard

tended tne misoyterian ennren and was a supporter of it in many ways. In what faith he died we are not informed. The funeral services were conducted at
the house of Mr. Xzra Pering, brother of
tne deceased, ty tne itev. JUr. Bower. Prof. Ballentino, before the closing prayer, made some appropriate remarks on the
profession of the faithful teacher. The in
fluence of any individual for good depends
on the format len of character; much of
this depends or. the labors of him whose
business ft is to train the youthful mind, hence the character of those he hits moulded are to-day monuments of him bv whom

covered with the blossoms common to spring. Isaac Appleby, living near Monticello, N. Y., avers that he picked ripe strawberries in n mendow on his farm in November, and that as late as the middle of the month dandelions were in bloom in his fields. Violets were found in the field near a New Jersey town, and the pastures afforded more food for cattle than ever before so late in the season.

We have received from the Keokuk Mercantile College a map. showing the city of Keokuk &nd railroad connections. Prof. Miller, of this college, has been its conductor for fourteen years, and has made it a business school second to none in the country. There is no good reason why young men desiring an education should pay an exhorbitaat price for it. Thirty dollars is a fair price for a thorough business course, and at the Keokuk College this sum secures that course, if you purchase a half-membership of the Progress. Tuition for the complete course of English brandies is only
