Advices from the rural districts
are to the effect that tramps have almost entirely disappeared. The sorrowful tale of endless miles of
weary travel in search of work and finding none, during which no food has passed the sufferer's lips, lost, in time, its efficacy. When this narrative no longer touched the servant-girl, and the cold meat and
cold pie were not forthcoming, the
racket had to be abandoned. What

hibits them from selling Jeaf tobacco by retail iu loose quantities, and directly to consumers. They cannot sell leaf tobacco to any one ex
cept to regular tobacco manufactur
ers who have paid a-special tax, or to persons who purchase it for exportation.
The Progress man put in three solid days, last week, at Lafayette, imbibing artesian water, and feels justified in indorsing it as equal .in every respect in its effects to the waters of Orange and Martin county mineral springs. While at Lafayette one can avail himself of the
comforts of a first-class hotel not
so, always, at the springs.
It is gratifying to know that
whatever taint of impiety may have lurked in the moral systems of the
Lafayette editors has been almost
entirely eradicated through the her
culean enorts of "Cyrus, the boy
preacher." It was an undertaking
ol great magnitude, but Cyrus was
equal to the task. When Cyrus
shall have snatched every man of
them from impending destruction,
it will gladden the hearts of all the
artesian drinkers to see that brave baud marching behind the "tavcr-
nickle," (as Cyrus terms it) while
the (oid)boy preacher prances gaily in front, jerking discordant chords
irom bis accordeon.

The general aEerra through the
country on Saturday a week ajt the
news of the President's relapse, though greatly diminished by the despatches and bulletins received since, bas by no means altogether
disappeared. J. he chill wnion oc
curred at half-pant hcvou in the
morning was tallowed by another four hours later, and this by a high fever. There was a third chill just before midnight. The consulting physicians from New York and Philadelphia reached the White House early Saturday evening, when a consultation was held, which showed that a pus-cavity or abcess had formed two or three inches below the point where the bullet had entered the President's body. This rendered an operation necessary, and an incision was made resulting in
a complete discharge and a relief
irom the distressing symptoms which had beta earned by the obstruction. No indications of blood-poisoning, hoTO appeared, and the Inter deapatchoi all go
to show that tha operation bu tubstantial-
ly restored the rremaent to toe condition in which he was before the relapse. The courage and iindaraoce displayed by the President throughout hi sufferings hnve been so remi.rksttle as tc deepen greatly the public intnrest aad sympathy. A new danger in the malaria of the Potomac has been called to the attention of the physicians by the addaa development of fever and ague among some of the persona In attendance. The summ climate and at
mosphere of Washington are not at all what one would choaie for a severely wounded man, who ha been in constant fever for nearly a month, to be exposed to;
but ol course this u unav oidaole antu no recovers sufficient itrorpth to be moved. The public ought t understand, meanwhile that in hit Drenent condition relaps
es may occur from time to time and that the best guaranty we have that the case it now
thoroughly unaemcoa oy tne payncians, and that the President has a moral and physical capacity to resist suffering of '.he most extraordinary and encouraging character.
