DatlTe Dances. Tbe most gracefnl meke oi all Fijian dances -was one which represents tki breaking of the waves on a coral-reef, a poetic idea, admirably rendered. Years ago I remember the delight with which we hailed an exquisite statuette in Sir Noel Fatoa's studio, representing th carling- of a wave by a beautiful f emalo figure, supposed to be foating thereon; but I never dreamed thai we shonld find the same idea so perfectly carried out by ft race we have been wont to think ol only as ruthless savages. The idea to lie conveyed is that of the tide gradually rising on the reef, till at length there remains only a little coral isle, round which the angry breakers rage flinging ttaeii white foam on evety "ride. At first the dancers form in long lines and approach silently, to represent the quiet advance of the waves. After a while the lines break np into smaller companion, which advance with outspread hands and bodies bent forward, to represent tho rippling wavelets, the tiniest waves beina represented by children. Quicker and quicker they come on, bow advancing, now retreating, yet, like trao waves, rteadUy progressing, and gradually closing on every side of the imaginary tet, round which they play or l.attl.j, after the manner of brokers, springing high in mid-air, and flinging their arms high above their beads, to represent thy action of spray. As they leap and toss their heeds, the soft white mail, or native cloth (which for greater effect they wear an a turban, with long streamers, aad also wind rowl the waist, whence it floats in long scarf-like ends), trembles and nutters in tho breeze. The whole effect fa most artistic, and the crones tria do their part iu imitating the roar of the snrf ou the r-'ef sound which to them has

TUB FAMILY DOCTOR A potrtTiCE of fresh tea-leaves, moistened with vater, will cure a stye on the eyflid. IfdR earache, dissolve asafetida in wnte:: j wt-.rm ft few drops and drop in tho ear, than cork the ear with wool. The truo physiological way of treating burns and scalds is to at onoo exclude tho air with cotton-batting, flour, sciaped potato, or anytliing that is handiest. 'L'o error, bunions, use pulverized saltpeter and swoot oil. Obtain at a druggist's 5 or 6 cents' worth of saltpeter; put into a bottle with sufficient dive oil to dissolve it : shake up well, and rub tho hiilan-.ed joints night and morning, and more frequently if painful. This following drink for relieving sickness of the stomach is said to lie very palatable and agreeable : Beat up one egg very we.l, say for twenty minutes, then add fresh milk one pint, water one pint, sugar to make it palatable ; lioiL and get it cool ; drink when cold. It' it becomefi curds and whey it is useless. Accobhtno to La France Mcdtealc, borax has been employed with advantage in cases of hoarseness and aphonia occurring suddenly from the action of cold. The remedy is recommended to singers and orators whose voices suddenly become lost, but which by these moans can be recovered instantly. A little piece of borax the size of a pea is to be slowly dissolved in the mouth ten minutes before singing or speaking. The remedy provokes an abundant secretion cf saliva, which moistens the mouth and throat This local action of the borax should be aided by an equal dose of nitrate of potassium) taken in warm solution before going to bed. A thoroughly qualified medical man has recently, in the course of his practice, come upon what ho believes and uses as a specific remedy for small-pox. The remedy is the bi-tartraro of potash, the common cream of tartar of the drug store ; two ounces dissolved in boiling water, with the juice of a lemon and sugar added. Let the patient drink as much as he likes, but not less than a wineglassful every hour. In some of his cases this medicine has exhibited the most remarkable curative effects. It will purge, but as it is perfectly harmless this will not matter, and it does not appear to be the cause of cure, the remedy acting specifically on tho virus, the pustules collapsing, leaving no pits, and a perfect cure following iu a short time. Ar v- kinds of burns, scalds, and sunburns are almost immediately relieved by the application of a solution of soda to the burnt surface. It must be remembered that dry soda will not do unless it is surrounded with a cloth moist enough to dissolve it This method of sprinkling it it on and covering it with a wet cloth is often the very best. But it is suflie'entto wash the wound repeatedly with a strong solution. It would bo well to keep a bottle of it always on hand, made so strocg that more or less settles on tho bottom. This is what is called a saturated solution, and really such a solution as this is formed when the dry soda is sprinkled on and covered with a moistened cloth. It is thought by some that the pain of a burn is caused by tho hardening of the albumen, and this relieves the pressure. Othersthinkthatthe burn generates an acrid acid, which the soda neutralizes. True as Steel. A good deal of character is summed up in those three little words, True as steeL Ion hear it 0 a ms;a, Se is as true as steely ' jau at once make up J8SI mind that you would like to number that man on your list of friends. In an emergency you could depend upon him. You could trust him behind your back. Be would never deceive and never fail you. It has seemed to be becoming less and less customary, of late years, for men in any of the relations of life to be aa truo as steel. Consequently divorces
nave oeea growing more ana more common, until it becamo so that comparatively little was thought of any married couple getting divorced. Fiduciary relations of a pecuniary character have in many cases been converted into means of plucking those for whose benefit they were designed. Guardians and trustees have waxed rich by plundering the estates of their wards. Presidents, cashiers and Directors of banks ha ve squandered the moneys of their depositors. Public officers uave combined together to convert their offices into dens of thieves. In the course of time things hod become so bad that men of character and men of means began to "ask, in all seriousness, Where is this going to end? And they said something must be done to check it The. prosecution of great offenders of this class wot; instituted. Conviction after conviction followed. It is really astonishing tbe number of men in some of the States, who wore once considered highly respectable, who for breach of trust 'of one kind or another have been sentenced to State prison. It has come to pass, in consequence of all these things, that positions of trust are now looked upon as more serious than they were, and not to be carelessly bestowed or lightly assumed. The value of a man who is true as steel is considered beyond computation. So old men of experience say ; so the young men say ; so women say ; ho all tho girls say. Young man, when you read this, stand before your looking-glass and ask if the youth you behold in that is as true as steel. If he is, he will sleep well, and wake strong and happy. JVctu York Ledger. Jokes of the Last Century. An old newspaper, printed way back in Revolutionary days, contained these witticisms of our daddies, showing that there was an tlement of fun in life even in fch-3 times that tried men's souls ; A good book and a good woman are excellent things for those who know justly how to appreciate their value.
There are men, however, who judge of both from the beauty of the covering. While an old farmer iu Connecticut was flogging one of his graceless sons, a pumpkin-headed fellow about 18, an idea all of a sudden entered the head of young Jonathan, and he sung out : "Stop, dad let's argue." A lady who was in the habit of spending much of her time in the society of her neighbors happened one day to be taken suddenly ill, and sent her husband, in great haste, for tbe physician. The husband ran a few reds, but soon returned, excluiming : " My dear, where shall I find yon when I get back?" A lady at confession, among other heinous crimes, accused herself of using rouge. "What is the use. of it?" asked the confessor, " I do it to make myself handsomer. " " And does it produce that effect?" "At least I think so, father." The ronfossor on this took his penitent out of the confessional into the light, put on his spectacles, and, hiving looked at her attentively, said: " Well, madam, you may use rouge, for you are ugly enough even with it". Planning Work. Even in housework tho brain may save the body a great deal of labor. A woman who plans Iter work beforehand always nccompliduis a groat deal more than her less-inetiodical sister, and with less fatigue to herself. Before she rise;-' iu the morning her bronkf-ist is thoroughly planned, and tho order in which the different details are to be carried out is quite decided upon. It makes all work easier to have it tlrai planned beforehand, and many a weary woman ; might secure many bright half hours to 1
herself every week if fdie would but inaugurate the system. It is just like packing a trunk you know how cany it is for one skilled in lho biiHitiens to put. in a third more th m o:u who piles things in " just as it happen!!." It is always such a pleasure to look Imek on a wellpacked day and ..to jtst what has been done. People whose days are full of idleness ana ease do not have a monopoly of happiucus by any means. Those who have nothing to do except to make themselves comfortable are generally peevish and diseonienled. Work has manifold advantages; and tho woman who hits led a busy life cannot be eonlent to rest iu idleness.
A llorr Homestead. Let us visit ono of Uie homesteads in the gardens. Tho white-walled house, although but one storied, is well elevated, and its roof is iron. Outside shutters of a pleasant green iianl; the two windows, and the door liotween them Ls green and paneled. There is, indeed, some pretense to architecture, and the whole is well kept aud substantial. The stoop is high and approached by steps. The water course beneath it in masoned out with solid stone aud bridged with the same material. Leafy trees of divers sorts shade the plaeo and the stable and outhouses in its rear. Wo enter a voorhuis, or front room, very lofty and but slightly furnished. Its walls are lined hy benches, and a table stands in tho middle. There are pictures, it may be very quaint and old world; scenes in the life of the prodigal son, or limuings of tho manger at Bethlehem, or the cross on Calvary. A now piano may be noted and a good harmonium, and pious books with Dutch titles lie scattered about And there are flowers on tho tabe, and ou mantel-piece photographs and oibwus, for tbero are daughters in tie house. In some place of honor lies v. great old Bible, a massive folio bound in leather aud with brass olasps; it is printed in foreign-looking type, ou ancient-looking lianer. and full of the strangest pictures

Spittoons stud this chamber's floor, for it is the great reorption-room, and visitors sit round it aud smoke their pipes at ar.d seasons of conference and waiting; and many such times there be. At tho back of this voorhuis is the dining-room, entered by large and even handsome foldiug-doors. Iu both apartments the walls are painted light bine, or green, or mauve; in both the ceiling is rafiered aud wondeu, varnished and dark. The great feature of the diningroom, apart from the usnol furnishings, is a small table near the window, with a chair on either side. Upon this table stands a coffee-urn, with a chafing-dish beneath it; and the day has scarcely turned before this urn begins to steam aud to bubble. On its doxter side is seated the lady of the house, who pours out coffee forall comers, aud, with feet well planted ouc a box-like foot-stiol, rules and managi-s her household. Children play around her, a colored girl sits watchful at her feet, and at favorable moments her lord aud master occupies the corresponding chair, utters familiui maxims and remarks, and his friend, sitting ha:.vl by, carrion on an intermittent conversation between wary mouthfuls of the scalding beverage. Country Girls. There ar some who deprecate their condition, ana some who have a false prido iu it, because they demand more consideration thou they merit A want of intelligence on all the subjects of the day, and of a refined education, is no more excusable iu a country than in a town-bred girl, in these days of many books aud newspapers. Many girls are discouraged because they cannot be sent away from homo to boarding-schools; but men of superior minds and knowledge of the world would rather have for wives women well and properly educated at home. Aud this education can be liad wherever the dosire is not wanting. Governor St John, of Kansas relatel in one of his speeches the following iucideut: . , . , "A poor woman with a baby ui liei anus came to nic with a petition for the pardon of her husband, who was sentenced to ten Years in tho penitentiary for homicide. Aftei examining tho papers I said to tho woman: " 'I am bound by ray official ditty, and must not consult my personal feelings. "Tho poor woman standing with thf child iu her aims, made tho following plea: " 'Hear mo and I will tell you the true story. Wo wt re married seven years ago. My husband was sober, industrious, and' thrifty. By great exertion and self-denial wo finally gof our home paid for, aud wero happy aud prosperous. In an evil hour the iitate licensed a saloon between our hoiue and his workshop. Ho was solicited to enter this saloon and weakly yielded. Hour after hotu he spent there playing cards. Oue day he became embroiled in a drunken quarrel, and fired by drink, struck a mini and killed him. He was tried and sent to the penitentiary for ten years. I had nothing to live on; and by aud by the ftheritt' turned us out oi our comfortable home into a rough shanty, neither lathed nor plust.-i-cd. The cold wind came in through the walls aud coiling. My oldest boy took sick aud died. Then little Tommy" took sick aud died. Now this babe iu my amis is sick, and I have nowhere to take it The State licensed that salon; the State murdered my children; and now, in God's name, I want you to set my husband free. "I said I would, and I did.9 A I-oslnjf Joitc A prominent physician of Pittsburgh said lokiuglv to a lady uitient who was complaimui; of her contumod lU-bcalth, snd of his inability to euro her, "Try Hop litters!" Somk tirno since we mado mention of an alleged new ai d important discovery in Cincinnati, it " ing a processs for fusing and molding iridium, a metal which has hitherto been practically incapable of being formed into bars. The discovery was said to have resulted from exjierinients made by Johu Holland, n gold pen manufacturer, who has long used iridium for malting "diamond points" on the peus. Hinoe the first announcement little has been heard about the matter, but the scientists have been looking into it, and Prof. Dudley has delivered a leoture before tho Ohio Mechanics' Institute in which he dwelt at length upon Uie subject He said tho discovery consists of applying phosphorus when tho ore is brought to a white heat and afterward eliminating tho phosphorus by lime applied with great heat The now metal has the appearance of steel, but is much harder, being next iu hardness to ruby. It will not rust and caunot bo iujnred by acids. Iridium cannot be fashioned by hammering while hot, nor can it be filed. It- is molded into convenient forms and then sawed or ground by rapidly revolving copper disks treated with emery and water. Great interest bus been aroused by the discovery, and already many uses f ir the metal have been suggested, besides the electric lamp. It has been found to 1k superior to platinum in telegraph instrnmouts. Professor Dudley gave an interesting history of experiments by chemists aud others with this metal, and said it was now undergoing elaborate examinations at the Cincinnati university. If these further experiments prove successful the new discovery will have a great and important influeuco on many mechanic arts, ami go far toward perfecting the electric light for popular use.
