cafed 08 degrees in the shade, ami many out-door laborers were com peiled tn quit work. It is a bad stale of affairs in this country when the fact that a man holds an important position subjects him to danger from assassination or violence. Richard Heath, of Corydon, Ind., who was a salesman in the New York Store last winter, died of consumption, at his home, on Thursday last. A man named Chandler is putting up a house near the spoke factory, in which he will sell groceries. Mrs. Clelland F. Dodds went to Chattanooga, Tenn., Friday a week, on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. Newell Sanders. Columbus Browning left Bloomington on Thursday last for Toledo, O., and may go to Put-in-Bay and other points north before his return. Says the New York Tribune ' The life of a President is not sufficiently protected when a lunatic can hold the balance of power in American politics. Bloomington still improves. Two new business blocks in course of construction at one time, and every room rented before the foundations arc put in, looks like a healthy business boom. Several box cars were attached to the Bedford excursion train, on the 4th of July, and on the return trip a sudden stoppage of the train threw three or four men against an old lady who was riding in one of the box cars, injuring her seriously. Perry Bros, of Ellettsville, the quarrymen, have secured the contract for furnishing stone for the Kosciusko county court house. The commissioners of Tippecanoe Gounty recently examined the stone in these quarries, and it is possible that the Lafayetto court house will be built of Ellettsville stone. Tobe Sloeomb came home from work at the spoke factory last Wednesday, and went into a summer kitchen to take a bath. He was suddenly struck by the heat, fell to the floor, and it was with the greatest labor that he was resuscitated. Dr. Faris chanced to be near, and rendered aid that doubtless saved Mr. Slocomb's life.

wiling. xnu wmic muif;, ever, sounds like a Democratic lie. Seems to the Progress that the controversy between the friends of the University (both Bides claim to be its friends) ought to cease. It can result in no good. If we fall out and wrangle over the University, an institution of great local value to Bloomington, we cannot exjiect people in other towns to feel much sympathy for our town or for the institution that is located in its midst. The views of any one man cannot visibly injure or benefit a State institution. Be men and let the wrangling stop. Howe Ilyors has purchased a complete outfit of machinery for a Hub and Spoke Factory, and has closed a contract with parties for the buildings, and will roon be driving ahead with his accustomed energy. The manufacture of Hubs is as important a branch oi business as that of Spokes, and with the improved maohinery now in use, the only additional necessary aids are timber and money. In these particulars Mr. Ryors is master of the situation. Now, with another railroad to cheapen transportation, Bloomington will become one of the leading manufacturing towns ot Indiana. Mr. Ryors' enterprise may be strangled by the greedy, conduct of those who have eligible locations. He don't propose to be blackmailed. P. S. Since the above was written Mr. Ryors has purchased four town lots of Wm. McCollough, southeast of Holtzmau's woolen mill. The location is convenient to the timber district, and water can easily be secured. The buildings will go up immediately.
