Maurice Haley, superintendent of the Dunbar furnace, at Dtrabar, la,, was bnitally murdered at his own door. The Style. Though it would seem that the people of ail dmntries are equally vehement in the pursuit of this phantom, style, yet in aisiost all of tliein there is a 'strange diversity in opinion ;is to what constitutes its essence ; and every different class, like the pagan nation, mlorrs it under a diffVrent foria. In England an honest citizen pacta np himself, hi." family, and his style in a bnsKV or kim

whisky, and rattle away to spend Hunday. A Baronet requires a chariot and pair; a Lord must needs have lmronche and four ; bnt a Duke, O a

Doke, cannot possibly lamber km Ktylc along tinder a coach and six, and h&if a score of footmen. This style has ruined the pence and harmooy of many ft'icusohold, for no soonor do they set up for style than instantly all tho honest, old comfortable anna vercmonir furniture idiscarded, and yon f tnlk cautiously about, among Hie uncomfortable splendor of Grecian chairs, Efcypttan tnbles and Etroaoan fm To Tt impiv.

ment in furniture demands an increase in the domestic estjiblibhinent, and a family that onco required two of these servants for convouumeo, now employ half n do.n forstyio. Bell Brazen was one ot these patterns of style ; and whatever fix-ilk she was seized with, however preposterons, was implicitly followed i-j all who would bo considered as admitted ia tho stylish arcana. Sho could not lay down to take an pfternoon's loll but site must have one servant to scratch hor head, two to tickle her feet, and a fourth to fun her delectable person while she slumbered. He Will Invent. "It is all very well to talk abont working for tho hoathen," said one, as the ladies of the cu clo put aside their sewing, "bnt I'd like to have some one tell me what I'm lo do with my husband." "What's the matter with him?" asked a sympathetic old lady, "William is a good man," continued the first, waving her glasses in an argumentative way, "but AVilliam will invent. He goes inventing around from morning till night, and I have no peace or comfort I didu't object when he invented a fire escape, but I did remonstrate when he wanted me to crawl ont the windovr one night last winter to see if it worked well. Then he originated a lock for tiic door, that wouldn't opsn from midnight until morning, so as to keep burglars out. The first time he tried it he caught, his coat tail in it, and I had to walk around him with a pan of hot coals 'all night w keep him from freezing." "Why didn't he take his coat off?" "I wanted him to, but he stood aronnd till the thing opened itself trying to invent some way of unfastening it. That's William's trouble. He will invent A little while ago he got up a cabinet bedsteaa that wonld sunt and open without handling. It went by clockwork. William cot into it. aud np it went Bless

yonr heart he stayed in there from Sat

urday aiternoon uum erauaay evening, when it Hew open aud disclosed William with tho plans and specifications of a

patent wash-bowl that would tip over

u heu it got jus-t so mil. xne resnir. oi that was I lost all my rings and a breast

pin down the waste pipe. Then he got

up a crnton tor a man tniw coma aiso ue

need as an opera glass, wnenever tne man leaned on it.' up it shut, and when

he put it to his eyes to find William it flew ont into a crutch and almost broke the top of liis head oft;"

'Don t any ot his inventions amount

to nnvthinct?"

"He says they do. Once he invented a rope ladder to be worn as a guard chain and lengthened ont with a spring. He put it around his neck, bnt the spring got loose and turned it into a ladder and almost choked him to death. Then he invented a patent boot-heel to crack nuts with, bnt he mashed his thumb with it and gave it up. His coal scuttle has made more trouble than anything else. It was riveted to the grate, and when the lire got low turn over and pour on coal. The rivets got rusty so he couldn't get it off, aud I just sit np in bed and listen to that scuttle all night. Then he arranged a corn popper so it wonld wriggle itself, and no he can't stop it. You can hear that popper going around in tho closet, and he won't let mo throw it away, because he wonts to invent something to hold it still. Why, ha h as got a washtnb full of inventions. One of them is a prayer book that al'vays opens at the right place. We tried it one morning at church, bnt the wheels and springs made such a row that the sex'on took William ont by the collar and told him to leave his fire engines heme when he came to worship. The other day I saw him going up 6treet with the model of a grain elevator sticking out of his hip pocket, and he is fixing up an improved shot tower in our bed-room." "Does ho make any money ont of his inventions?" "He doesn't appear to. The otliei night a man came down end wanted William to get up a patent umbrella fastening. Since then he has wrecked all tho umbrellas and parasols in the house. We haven't a thiug to use if it should rain. Now he's at work on n combined cat and rat trap. Tho cats and rats go in at different ends and cat each other np at least, he says they will; and after that he is going at a pair of pantaloons, in which a man can fall down without spraining his leg. Wiliiam means well, but he's got that mania foy inventing, and I don't know where it will r.d." And the old lady sighed as she started for home to see what new inconv aaience her ingenious husband was preparing to perpetrate. -Brooklyn Eagle, Tobacco Production In the United States. The report of J. It. Dodge, spasla.1 agent for the collection of statistics of agriculture, shewing the; tobacco product of tbe United States for tho census years 1880 and 1870, has been issued from the Census Offlco in Washington, The comparative statement presented in the report shows an increase in production of 80 per cent, during the decade, the product in 1880 being placed at 473,107,373 pounds, and that of 1870 at 262,735,341. This apparent ii.ireauo, Mr. Dodge says, exaggerates tho real advance in lo'jiitoo cultivation, as tho preceding census crop was a small one, and the feu of taxation may have operated to prevent a full census of the tobacco iu 1870. The crop reported in 1880 was one of good production, and not iu excels of present requirements of home consumption and exportation. Fifteen States produce now, as in 1870, more than 99 per cent, of the tobacco of the United States, though it is rcnorted in twenty-two ether States aud Territories. Of these only Missouri, Illinois, Indiana aud Massachusetts produce ,eas than in 1870. Kentucky ocoupiei tho first position, prod-icing 3G per cent, of the total product of tho country. Virginia holds the second plane, Penx Hvlvania has advanced from 1he twelfth to the t'lird, Wisconsin from the fifteenth to tho tenth, and North Carolina, Connecticut aud New 1'ork have each gained one point in the runk of tho tobacco States. Tbcso that have retrograded, relative to production, are Masgachustitta, Maryland, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and TeunuBBoi. Tho average yield per acre is shown to lie 731 pounds, varying from 1,599 pounds in Mnesachiwct;8 to 471 pounds in North Carolina. This variation in the rate of yield, the ropijrt states, is due, in n differing degree, to tbe uo and neglect of fertilizers, habit of growth of the different varieties and vioUditudci of the seasons. Tho following table shows tho total product in pounds ami the yield per scare, in 1880, in the iiftotu leading tobacco-growing States :

Bulled Kggs Flavored with Truffles. Truffled boiled eggs owe their discovery to the forgetf illness an 1 negligence of a cook. Tho epicurean master one day brought homo some truffles, and gave them to his cook, with the injunction to keep them for tho preparation of a pheasant that was to grace his board. The cook, not knowing whore to put the precious inberoles, placed them into a glass jar where she kept hi r eggs. The next morning, at breakfast, the Marquis do Cnssy and his friend had boiled eggs. " Hut your eggs are trufiled !" suddenly exclaimed th, shiirp-s(eir.d Marrpiis. " Certainly they are," replied the host, "lint how do yon manage it?" "I feed my oUokenii on rasped tvufiles ! " " No 1 joking aside, call up your cook and let Aer explain," u4d the Marquis.

The cook came, and said that she had put tho truffles into a gloss globe fuli of 'RES the globe hud been shut with a cork plug, and kept covered for twentyfonr hours ; the shell of tha eggs seemed to be permeable, and tho subtle perfume of tho truffles had penetrated the meat of the eggs. The Mormon Church. Tho Mormon church teaches that thorn are numerous gods, and that those who have been eminent as saints on earth become gods in heaven, Smith is a god, and no doubt by this time Brigham Young has become something like that, too. The Mormons also believe that Jesus is just above Smith, and that Adam, in turn, is superior to the Savior. All these g.Kls have many wives, nnd eaoh governs his own descendants, so that the glory of a "aaint" when he gets to be a god depends largely on how many wiveB and children he has, and, therefore, the hold of polygamy on the people. It is held that the ten commandments are the rule of life, but there have been several revolations which considerably weaken the binding force of !lw Mosaic law. The Mormons condemn infant baptism, although children are considered old enough to be baptized when they reach their 8th year. They practice the baptism for the dead, a living person being publicly baptized as tbe representative of one or more iersons who have died. Forinstance,Georgr Washington, Benjamin Franklin and others have been baptized into the church in this style. It should be said that a community, whose leaders reside at Piano, 111., reject polygamy and many other of the offensive tenets of the Utah Mormons, In regard to their form of government, it may be 6tated that tho priesthood is organized as follows : The First Presidency, tho twelve apostles, the high council, the seventies, the high priests, elders, priests, teichers and deacons. The First Presidency consists generally of three persons, with President Taylor at the head, and these persons preside oyer and direct the affairs of the entire church. The hierarchy is divided into the Melchizedek and Aaronie priesthood, the former being the higher, the latter being the literal descendants of Aaron and designated by revelation. The First President is elected by the whole body of the church ; he is the prophet and seer, and alone has the "right" to work miracles and receive revelations. The belief in a continued divine revelation through the medium of the prophet is the corner-stone of She Mormon church. The work done by the several officials of this sect is, as has been indicated, all under the control of the First Presidency, that is a worse despotism titan almost any now known. IFrom the Freeport (111.) Bulletin. Tiikue is now a substance which is both professionally and popularly indorsed aud concerning which, Sir. J. B. Fersscliwciller, Buttcvillo, Oregon, writes: 1 have often read of the many cures effected by St. Jacobs Oil and was persuaded to try the rem edy myself. I was a sufferer from rlieumatism and experienced great pains, my leg being so swollen that I coald not move it I procured St Jacobs Oil, used it lreely and was cured. A Girl in Demand. The girl after whom any number of marrying men ire looking has been discovered again. In other days she has written a book or developed a phenomenal voice, or shot a nnmber of dollars' worth of wild animals, or done something else that secured local fame and considerable money. This time she has planted, cultivated, harvested, and sold three hundred nnd fifty brothels of wheat. I; is needless to say that a number of young fellows are wildly iu love with that girl, aud that the list of suitors will rapidly increase as the record of her achievement makes the rounds of the press. A great deal is said about women who marry merely for tho r.ake of being supported, but they are no more numerous than men who long for wives who will do work enough to supply their husbands with bread and butter, cigars and drinks. There are men in New York who would borrow their last friend's last dollar rather than do day's work in a wheat field, yet would willingly endow the Indiana g:rl with half of their worldly debts, and do it with the best plain gold ring that could be bought on credit. They would also, as soon as tho wheat crop was harvested, find business calling them to New York, tnd keeping them hero as long as the money lasted or an advance could be secured on the next crop. It is to be hoped that the well-known English "beauty lady" was equal to the occasion, also, when an elderly and eminently respectable gentleman made an afternoon call, and, as elderly gentlemen often do, he took the child and kissed her. "You must not do that," said ihe child, struggling, "I am a respectable married woman!" "What do you mean, my dear?" asked the astonished visitor. "Oh, that's what mamma always stiys when the gentlemen kiss her:" replied the artless infant. Has Kverj-i Ulna; Fulled Yu I Then try Warner's Safe Kidney aud Liver Cure. Tbebs are 'many amazing superstitions still prevalent among the herrug fishermen of England and Scotland. For years tho Manx fishers durst not put to sea without a dead wren to ward off storms and disaster. This wa due to a tradition of a Jce spirit which hunted the herrings and was attended by storms ; at length it took the form of a wren and flew away. Consequently a dead wren was thongbt to keep thingn straight. As lately as 1854 the herring fishery, being very bad at Banff, Scotlaud, some fishermen dressed a cooper in a flannel shirt " with bars stuck all over it," and carried him in procession through the town in a handbarrow. Thin was done to bring better lnok. Kiuney-Wojit r-idloally onref UliomueM, Piles and (Ui nervous dltoatMi

Blindness to danger produced by living among it with impunity seems almost universal. Wo believe that the best authorities recommend that night watchmen iu big buildiugsshould be frequently changed, because when a man has made a ovrtnin round every night for years, or oven months, and hits never found a lire or a thief, ho becomes quito blind to either of these should ho chance to meet them later on. Seo how this blindness would tell in the case of a driver of an express train. He has, perhaps, to make a journey of one hundred miles, and stop, perhaps, three times, bnt has to pass thirty, forty, or more signnls. If the trnliio is well regulated ho may travel this road for months together 'without over finding one of tlieso signals of "danger;" but were ho to get in a condition of danger-bliudness and not look out for these signals the result would probably bo that there wonld bo a terrible aoe.dent. He must go on assuming that every signal is at danger, though novel- in his experience has it been found to be bo. He must also exercise patient and untiring vigilance iu inspecting and testing his enemies; trust no one, but see that all is right for himself. At sea fire drill aud "umu overboard" drill are carried out, aud iu the military servico false alarms of lire or attack ore given to exercise the men in vigilance and promptness of action; but ou a line of railway this is impossible. Punctuality in the running of the trains is of the first importance, so that wheu something goes wrong tho staff must deal with it, as it were, by instinct, nnd how well thoy do it is obvious from the comparatively few accidents that happen. How danger ia often warded off by courage and intelligence the general public seldom learn. s' tfurdttg Kevlcw. Small plants, that can lie bought ve.'j- cheap, if put outiu May, will completely fill a lied in three weeks after planting, and early in June will be a mass of flowers, and continue getting better and better until blackened by the frosty nights of autumn. While other plants are wilting under tho scorching rays of our summer su u, the geranium seems to glory in the hottest weather. There is such a variation in the color of the flower, as well as in the form and color of the leaves, that with a few varieties of geraniums ft more artistic and varied bed can be made than with almost any other flower. The center of a largo bed may be scarlet, with light colors around, or a few rows on the border may be of the silver-leaved kinds. Indeed, we have seen delicate and intricate patterns formed of geraniums alone iu some of tho celebrated gardens of Europe. Ixdiaxs never drink to drown sorrow.
