There is a very decided opposition at Ellettsvitle against the granting of retail liquor license to Sharp of that place, and the temperance people declare their, determination to come to Blooraingtou and fight it to the bitter end. A number of the Bloomington young people attended a ball at Bedlord, Tuesday night of last week. Prof. Ed. I.OXGELOIVVS DAY In Bloomington; (Ind.,) Public School?. A "Poet's Dity" was plven to Henry W. Longfellow by the Public Schools df this city on lurt P.ndny. Kooms Nos. Gj 7t 8 and the High School celebrated the poet'd birthday witMftp-propTiato exercises. Henry Wudswdrth Longfellow, who for voars ha- been crowned by public opinion, tho Poet Laureitttt America, wa 74 years old February ilih4 1831. Thousands of schools all over tie country celebrate the event by devotirii; tfeeir literary

exercises, for one day, exclusively io Iwnjjfellow's life nnd work. In this my our young people are led to know, and (o riant to know more of our best writers. Tie " Longfellow's Day " in our High Softool last week was especially interesting, a'n.cC was, ' in every respect, creditable to the school. At tho timo for the commence-, ment of thc performance, tho chapel of the Preparatory Department wai well tilled with visiting friends. At 1:30 p. m. tho exercises began by the singing of tho ?anlm of Life," by the school. Tho first of the litetnry exercises was an KBsny by Miss Ida fcnjoy, subject: "American Poets." This w,-as followed by an Essay on th " ioranjiy- of Longfellow," by Sherman I)avis? Sts pollfl Parker- then read an Essay on " The Works of Longfellow.' Each of thoso essays was road in a clear, distinct tone, and each was a wcllwritton production. At this point tho audicaeo was delighted bv the singing of that beautiful old ballad, "The Rainy Day' by the quartette Misses. Clara Orchard, Sadie t'herry, Delia WyVio and Delia Parker. For sweet soul murdc nothing is prettier than theso old songs. The singing of the young ladies was highly complimented on alt sidus. After tho music Mi na-4 SJcKnjght gave a good selection from Hiawatha, foUoY;ed by a reading-selection from Evangeline, by Miss Hay Sewnrd. Hoth wero well rendered and deserve praise. Little ftlunsoa Atwater here read an account of his visit to the Poot Longfellow's home, and showed the audience soma leaves which he hud gathered from the poet's shrubbor. It was an interesting feature of tho performance. Then followed thc poem " Excelsior given in concert recitation by about twenty-five studonts, after which the exercises were varied by eight pupils, rising, in turn, fro,m txeiy p.lacest and giving short selections from Longfellow, among which were pasagea from "The Village" Blacksmith1 "Hittwathas Wooing Tho Castle by tho Sea," and "-The Old Clock on tho Stair.' (Tho last, given hy Miss Julia Emery, attructed especial attention.) A rest of ten minutes was then given. Alter rest tho so&g "Beware," was given in semi chorus, and the literary exercises wero resumed by a disciusipn of the question : Is Longfellow a greater poet than Tennvson? Messrs. Frank Arnott and Will H. Holland affirmed and W. C Mason and P. H. CUigston denied. The speeches of the young men showed good thought and extensive reading, and they wero well vrritten, and vfell gotten off. Several expressed surprise that tho question was so well argued. Mr. Robert C. Postor, Prof. Newkirk and Key. Churpie were cho&en judges of the debate, nnd rendered a verdict in javor of or poet, and in favor of the young men who had argued for him. The debute was followed by an oration.subject, "Influence of Longfellow," by Jn. M. Dunlap, which was good both in its matter nd delivery.. '.'.The Bridge," a solo, was then sung in a most nteasing manner, by Mr. Dennis Keeso. Thtg (m one of tho best things of the afternoon. Birdie Andrews then read an original poem on Henry W. Longfellow., which was followed by" selections from the Courtship, of Miles Standish, given by Dow Foster and Jennje Bryan. The story of te Captain's Courtship, as given by Mr. Bs ter and Miss Bryan, constituted probably the favorite performance of the afternoon. Few persons have to such a degree the happy faculty of knowing,;. how a thing should be said, as has Miss Bryan. The last of the literary work was a declamation, "Tho ftominc,'' of fUawatha, which was well given by Miss Oho $(ull kin. It was listened tQ attentively ana applauded vigpHiusl Tho exercises closed by singing, "Gently Steeps," by eight gentlemen. The school may bo congratulated on its successful work."
