The rent money of Mendelssohn Hall one night would be more thao sufficient to pay for matting for the stairway, and for rubber to deaden the banging of those doors. It is very annoying to the audience and to those who desire to be heard, to hear the lumbering footsteps on the stairway supplemented by the thunderous noise of those doors coming together. Jas. A teacher named Ferguson was on trial before Supt. McGee, last Saturday, on charges of some nature. The result of the trial was that the superintendent revoked Ferguson's license. Some persons accuse the young man of writing sentimental verses this is a very grave charge, and accused should be given an opportunity to disprove it. For the Progress. T?Sp to Mentor. Wo left Indianapolis on Monday evening in the face of an east wind and a heavy ruin storm. JJy the tim wo reached Muncio- on tho Buo Lino, we stalled in a snow drift. Kroiu that to Cleveland every few miles wo would run into a snow drift, and tho drive whoels would spin around on the wet packed snow without touching tho mils and without any effect upon tile train. Fortunately a freight train with huge locomotive was ju3t behind us, and running over tho truck broken by our train had no trouble in keeping up. "When we stalled it would come up behind and give us smug help. In this, way our pour train toiled all night and got us ilito Cleveland and within about three squares of the depot by one o'clock next day, six hours behind time. From that to tho depot passengers had to walk in tho face of the most furioustorm I ever saw on land, and wade through front one to two feet of snow drift. But it is nn ill wind that blows no good. The storm that dclayod us piled up tho snow in the east end of the depot so that tho Mentor train was two hours late and wo got in just in time to jump on the pintform of the back car as it went out of the depot. In forty minutes wo were at Hentor, The storm kept every visitor away that day but one besides myself. Not seeing anybody about we struck out for tho residence of the l'resident-elect. "Go one mile south to tho Brick School IIouso and then half a milo west until you seo a house with pink shade-painted roof," said the station agent. Of course wo felt a little proud that we had boon living for seven years in a pink shade, and almost sorry that wo had changed it. Now comes the tug of war. That lane south was full from fenca to fence part of the way with snow drift. The gentleman who was with me was a bravo New Yorker who was ac
customed to 14 from one to six feet of
snow." But the air was so full of drifting snow that sometimes wo could not see n snow drift until we plunged into it. ilost of the way we got along pretty well by walking close to the fence on, tho lco side, but several times had to wao through snow four feet deep, for a short distance. Just in front of Garfield's gate the snow was as high as tho palings, sq we had to go around by the carriage gate, and it was about two feet deep on his front porch. On entering the front door a grave looking colored man ushured us into a spacious hall, boated bv a stove just like those in
Allen's and Shoemaker's stores. After
some puffing and sweeping and stamping we laid our coats, hats and Arctics around
thn stove to drv. and were handed into a
neat and tasteful sitting room, heated with a Philadelphia low down grate. One of Garfield's Clerks whose nnmo la
