Obituary Notice. Died, on the 3d inst., Mr. James W. Carter. Mr. Carter was born :.n Frederic Count v. Virginia. Sept. loth. 1813. His father mid n.oliior !otli died during the yen. re of hi boyhood. Tie spent several years of his early life (is a clerk in a mercantile eitiillishment of Frederick County. In 1834, when A years of age, lie came to Bloomington, Indiana, in Vic nuighborlt .,od of which, his brother. Thos. Carter, had been residing some fifteen years. Soon after coming to Bloomiiigton. he. entered into the mercantile business in partnership with his brother John, who removed nt this time from Kentucky to Bloomiiigton. The partnership was not lone continued, hut Mr.

omet manners. His itc as a ciiristian was in harmony with his character. It was quiet, consistent and exemplary. For a number of years hefi-ro the close of his life he was a great sufferer. Hut durine this
suffering he patient and trustful. Sometimes darkness would envelope his soul aud ho longed fur clearer evidence of his acceptance with God. But these seasons of darkness were only temporary, He walked in conscious dependence upon God and in the hope of the christian. And although the power of disease rendered him unconscious durinir the last hours of his ea rthly life, we know that death to him was

nor, Circuit Judge, for the 10th District, and Jcre. F. Pittman, of Monroe, has received the appointment of Prosecutor. Mr. Carlton was a resident of Bloomington many years ago, and was for, some time editor of the Bloomington News Letter, published by his brother, J. C. Carlton. Judge Carlton is a man of fine literary attainments, an industrious student of the law, and, we believe, will give general satisfaction in his new position. The Court convened on Monday, with a docket of over three hundred

The bees are dying,fromjeome cause, in all parts of the State. From a number of bee keepers in and around Bloomington, we learn that every swarm is dead in some colonies, i ' while in others,two or three swarms have been spared, out of fifteen or twenty that were evidently in good health last Fall Cyrus N. Nutt, who has been in New York since the summer of 1871, attending Lectures at the N. Y. University, had the degree of M. I). conferred upon him, Feb. 20th. In recognition of his ability in his chosen Profession, the Board of Public Charities of New York have appointed Mr. Nutt "Physician and Surgeon" to the Prisoi and Work House ou Black well's Island. The schooling he has received is of a practical nature, and he will doubtless make his mark. His friends in Bloomington will be pleased to learn of his success A number of deaths, from Spotted Fever, have taken place at Stiuesville and vicinity, within the past two weeks

At Tuscola, Ills., a clerk dropped a
coal oil lamp, and the town was half destroyed by fire. Mrs. O'Leary's cow was guilty of the same piece of carelessness at Chicago, some time ago, aa many of our readers will doubtless recollect Enos Lowe is confined to his room, in the Orchard Block, south College Avenue, and is in the last stages of Consumption Messrs. Kanffman & Co. have disposed of the Bakery and Confectionery in the Orchard Block, to a couple of gentlemen from a distance, who propose to engage in the business extensively in this place. Mr. Kauffman will return to the Northern part of the State, so soon as he can settle up his business in Bloomington Ike Hooper, for a long time with Dunn & Co., left Bloomington last Friday, for Minnesota! He will loeute at a point west of St, Paul, and engage in the 'umber business Blind Tqm gave a Concert at College Chapel, hist Friday night. other named Murphy, quarreled. Murphy advanced on Pritchett with a knile, when ,'ie latter struck Murphy with the handle of an ax, felling him to the ground. He then got up and started for Pritchett, when a man named McPike stepped between them. Pritchett then drew his knife, and reaching around McPike, stabbed Murphy in the side. It is believed that the wounded man
