His servants repaired to his room before 10 o'clock, as it was later than his usual hour for coming down. They found him lying 0:1 the bed apparently suffering from apoplexy. Mr. Forrest had been exercising with dumb-bells, and had evidently nearly completed dressing, having been adjusting his necktie when overpowered. He died in about half an hour after being discovered. He leaves no immediate relatives, hie. only sister having died several years since. Mr. Forrest was born at Philadelphia on the :t of March, 1806, and was, consequently, e early 67 years of age. Inula mopt dcplorablo addition in the. lire at the Filth Avenue Hotel, in New York. Eleven human cr.idciv, and pe niniai'V damage to tho amount oi.' J5ll.O0(l,aro the not results ot theealamity. A Now York paper given the following particulars of the tei rililo affair : The tire originate 1 in the Twenty-third street winjr. oeeiam-1 by the 500 servants: erap:orod in the hotel, ihroiiKb which a wooden spiral litaireaso run from top to bottom, and aUo ths laundry elevator. The smoke was liivi detected by ri gentleman boardei about retiring to bed, who informed the clerk. The alarm was given, ar.,1 when the employes of the house v,ehed the uppc.r stories, occupied by the gervanto, tlie flames had gained runout, hiailway on the top floor where the spiral (staircase, waa ablaze. The servants h, the tilth and sixth ttorien were roused with diflienltv, and c-rfc-aped hurriedly in their iiight drewex. By this time consternation had spread amon;; the gueiits, nearly all of whom vicated the piouu-.es more or less pjnicslri.hen. The scrub -women, occupying two rooms in the esvontli story, were c'om'pletely cut off from escape by tho stairway. A window opened on the roof, a few feet below, but it was barred up by a strong iron gratin?, intmideit to prevent' any ingress from the quarters of the late servants. It is said this grating could have been readily wretched loose, but the women who perished had doubtless lost all presence of mind, for their roasted bodies were found huddled togetiier in the center of the room. The tiro originated probably through tlie carelessness of some of the female servants, and crept rapidly upward between tho lath partition to the wooden eoekloft, covered with tarred roof, where the unfortunate women
perished. It must have been burning some timo before the alarm waa given. The bodies of the victims were taken in ambulances to the Morgue. The scene at the Morgue was truly heartrending. From 8 o'clock until 5 a constant stream of men and
women viewed the bodies of the unfortunate women why were burned or scalded to death
in tho tiro-trap attic. It is estimated that over
HuMO persons viewed the charred remains, most of whom were attracted by morbid curiosity, though manv were searching for relative's and friends who had been employed in re bote:. The pohso had great dimcnhy in restrtiiniog women, thousands of w'.-om clamored for admission. When manv of them confronted the terriblosight, they began a terrible weeping, praying, and deported themselves extravagantly. Several we;e led off in a fainting condition, and one young woman, who was accompanied by bar mother, fell ia a fit and was removed by force. The to 'UC:i wore ranged side by side, in rough pine coilfius, in the yard at tho western end of the Morgue. &voral among ths deceased bad been burned almost to eintters, while others had been literally ror-sted. In some instance the llesb was scalded from the bones.
