ObcHoriiea of Hornce Orecler A Solemn and Impooins i'tiKonnt The funeral Cortege VItiicBcl by Thoasands, Now York (Dec. 4 Correspondence of Chicaeo Tribune. The funeral of Horace Greeley to-day waa a tributo befitting tho memory of it

man whose life and character have so (strong a hold on the attVctions of the American people. Tho denso throng at the church; the long and solemn procession ; the endless multitudes lining Broadway; the draped horses and flags ; the tolling bells and tho final rites at Greenwood, combined to form the most impressive obsequies in the history of the metropolis. The floral contributions tlir.t poured in from all sides were unexampled in number and novelty of desipn. The interior of the Church of the Divine Paternity, where the obsequies were held, presented a somber and beautiful pppearance. Outside of the church were throngs waiting in respectful siitnc. Police stood in front of the church as a guard. The church wa opened at about half-past 10, although ladies had previously been

aumii ten atut nuea tne cauencs. uur-

nc the hour which elapsed before the

fiiT.vat ot tne procession, a strain oi

music was discoursed by the choir.

Among the hist celebrities to arrive

were liovernor lloltman, resident-

irant and Itecoe Conkling: soon after

entered, and immediately following

hem. were Henry vv ii?on, Minister

Washburne, and Secretary Belknap,

who sat at the right of the pulpit.

rher.! were also Gen. Schutz, 'Lyman 1'rumbull and Vice-President Colfox,

who tojik a seat near the President.

Ihe crowds outside extended as far s

the eve could reach on either side on

Jcitth avenue, awaiting the anval ol the

procession.

he church had been appropriately

lecoratcd. Over the door in front hun

flag draped with black. In the

vestibule was a portrait of Greeley, with

crape around the irame. The screen behind the pulpit was covered with black

:!loth, hanging in gracelul folds and re-

loved by testoort', while Irom the top

of it depended graceful st iings of smilax.

1 he pulpit itsell and rail in front were fuliy draped. Drapery ran around the frcnt of the galleries and from bracket

to bracket along the tide walls. Lengths

of serge drooped from the center of the ceiling to the'spring of each arch, twined about columns and hung from the pin

nacles ot the organ. 1 be clock, stopped at 10 minutes before 7, the hour of Greeley's death, was surrounded with

black, and above it, in a green wreath, W2S a white cross of flowers. The pew

Mr. Greeley used to occupy about mid

way of the north aisle, next the wall, was draped with crape. The figure in

tlowers ot a lyre with broken strings, hung at the head. The seat was thickly

strewn with white nowers, camehas

being placed in the spot which Greeley

himself used to occupy. This pew will be left empty for thirty days. The mo-it remarkable decorations of the church, however, were the flowers. There was

a beautiful appropriateness and personal cigniticancG iu many of the devices

which surrounded his bier. At the back of the pulpit, under the words : " It is done," with which his great life closed, was a weath of ripened wheat, a lit em

blem ot the rich harvest the keen sickle

of Deati had so lately reaped. Below this was a shield of white flower, with the arms of the State of New York in purple blo3soms, the gift of the Common Council. Still below the last, an axe and a pen were arranged in the form of a. cross. A magnificent arch of white flowers, presented by the ladies of Dr. Chnpin's congregntion, spanned the pul

pit over the Hpeaicei' he.td. Un its white

ground was wrought in crinifon bloitorns

the legend " 1 Know that My Redeemer Liveth." Indeed, these words and

It is done," were repeated again and

again in decorations, in all sorts of device.'-.

About the coffin itself were arranged

gifts of the choicest kind from personal

menus, the air was lull ol the sweet breath of flowers. They were thick un

der the foot which trod ko ifvcrently as they bore him away. They filled every available space with their beauty. Thurlow Weed was , p ,11-bearer at his own request. Dudley S. Gregory, also a pall-beaver, was th: man who loaned Mr. Greeley the thousand dollars with which he started the Trihum. At twenty minutes past 11 o'clock the procession entered the church. Th solemnity of the scene was most impressive. The stillness wa such that it seemed as though the people in the church scarcely breathed. Rev Dr. Chapin opened the ceremonies by reading an appropriate selection from the scriptures. Miss Clara Louise Kellogg next sang very touchingly, "I Know that My Redeemer Liveth;" after which Henry Ward Beecher deiiveted the funeral oration. The address waa followed by earnest prayer and another hymn, "Angels ever bright and fair." The Rev. Dr. Chapin then pronounced tbe benediction, and the choir sang a most beautiful and touching chant, ''0, what is life?" after which the procession moved down Fifth avenue. No music was in the line. The procession, as it slowly moved do.vn the avenue, presented a magnificently imposing app .arance.

1 lie door steps ot all the hot ses along tho f.venue, without exception, were thickly crowded. The windows and balconies were full, and the hotels, clubhouses, and public buildings of all kinds presented a se-i of human faces. The gathering was greater than the multitude which welcomed the Grand Duke Alexis, or watched the funeral of Abraham Lincoln. From De. Chapin's Church to Madison Square, a distance of

just a mile, the avenue was nearly blockaded. On the outer edge of the sidewalk tho crowd was huddled two and three deep, and on the walk within there was barely room to pass. In Madison Square ami on the space before the Ffth Avenue Hotel, the concourse was Btill greater. All along Broadway, from Fourteenth street, through which tho procession moved, to Hamilton Ferry, there was a dense mass of people. About Bowling Green, the Battery, aud the Ferryhouse, the crowd stood patiently waiting. On the Brooklyn Side, the same scenes were repeated. Along Union street to Fourth avenue, and down tho avenue to the cemetery, btretched the wonderful double lines of watchers. At Greenwood there was a btill more surprising sight. Here an enormous concourse had (.atherod, standing about the entrance gates and flinging tho winding roadu, and concentrating about the open grave, so that the mourners, when they ariived, had great difficulty in following the b-;'.t .f . About one hundred and twenty-eight carriages followed the remains to Greenwoo 1 Cemetery. The body wan deposited in Mr. Greeley's lot. There were no ceremonies of any kind further than laying the body in its last resting place.

Tut Supreme Question. Health is the most important of earthly bles lings, and therefore the nervous anxiety of the tick to ascertain the relative meritB o' the various medicines in use is not sur prising. Within the last two y ;arsmany thousands of invalids have abandoned

the preparations of the pharr.mciopolist I for the reir.edy introduced by Dr. Walker, of C.'d.fornia, under the somewhat ( ccentrij name of ViyEflAu Bitters. That this new Vegetable medicine is " winning golden opinions of all sorts of

if ople" is beyond a doubt. The ac

counts we he?r of its extrtxirdinary ef

fects in cases of chronic dyspepsia, rheumatism, liver complaint?, malarious fevers, nrrvou- prostrations, and many other distress ng diseases, certainly jusiify the popularity which it has ever) -where acquired. Dr. Walker claims for his specific a remedial power ever all disorders that do not involve an irreparable destruc tion of bone and fiber, avid results so far vp je ir to have justified tho claim. In this age of wonder we ure not disposed

to aeuy the possibility ot any phenomena not directly at variance with tbe laws of nature, and as it is held by many physiologists that ail maladies proceed ire m the same generic cause, we see no reason for the incredulity with which some people regard the ides, of a Universal Medicine. Dr. Walker's preparation seems destined to be universally approved. Com.
