NEWS OF THE WEEK. Tlie East. The inTeatigfttion into tho charges of bribery in the PhilidolphiaCity Council reveals an amount of corruption and venality rivaling that exposed in New York last year The Centennial Commissien has issued an address to the poopleof the United States for subscriptions to the proposed ten million dollars fund. The Commission looks to the unfailing patriotism of the people of every section to see that each contributes its share of the exponsea, and receives its share of the benefits of an enterprise in which all are so deeply interested. It urges the formation in each State and Territory of centennial organizations, which shall in time see that county associations are formed, so that when the nations are gathered together in 1S76, each commonwealth can view with pride the contributions it has made to the national glory. Chart. Francis Adaiis arrived at New fork from Europe last week Anthony Trollope, the great English novelist, arrived at New York the other day, having made the journey overland from San Francisco. ......George Grant was hunc at West Chester.

The amount of money realized on insurance will be from thirty-five to forty millions, and it is believed that tho direct and indirect losses will not exceed $10,000,000 after the insurance is liquidated Public sentiment in Boston is averse to accepting offers of money from other cities. The Globe, in an elaborate leader, comes out flat-lbotod upon the men who, it says, would make Boston a beggar from tho whole Union, and publishes several letters from citizens in itujrpoTt or iiB'cumineuiay "Boston sviiriii tlay, says the Globe, is, notwithstanding the fire, receiving an income ol ovor $700,000,0000, and to say that a community thus circumstanced cannot succor its own pool and needy, without receiving charity from abroad, is absolutely absurd Harvard College Buffered by the fire to tbe extent of $562,000, including the value of the land, and it will cost $5uf),000 to rebuild. Toward this it has $r6u,000 good insurance, out of $216,000, for which it was insured. The permanent loss is thus reduced to $200,000. " This," says President Eliot, " wo must beg." The most exact statement cf the quantity of wool destroyed, just mado, givts a total of 10,225,000 lbs. It is roughlj estimated that 3,000,000 hides, upper and rough leather acd calf skins, were destroyed. Already prices in upper leather have advanced from ten to twelve per cent., and it is quite likely that a corner will bo made in this staple. There was quite a large destruction of carpets, some setting it as high as 200,000 rolls. In speaking of treatment of the horse disease, Mr. Choate, of Boston, who has a large number of horses, gays that in his opinion carbolic acid and chlor: de of lime have had most beneficial results in preventing the spread of the distemper, antl that if the former was thoroughly used before any symptoms of the malady appeared in stabler, none of it would be seen. The prescription which he values most highly, because of results noticed, is the following : Sulphur, 4 oz. ; potaseie nitrate, i oz. ; pulverized ginger, 3 oz. ; pulverized dignitatis, 1 oz. The dose, a tablespoonful, may be given with the food when the horse will eat, with water, or laid upon the tongue when nourishment and food are refused. The above given internally, with an external application of Ferguson's wonderful oil to the throat and glands, give almost immediate relief. The cough subsides, the catarrh il indications grow less, the fever ceases antl appetite is resumed.

i'Ror. Tvmdai.i. has perfected a new
respirator for firemen, in which the solidest particles of the densest smoke are arrested by film? of cotton wool saturated with glycerine, and the most pungent gas by layers of charcoal. By this simple means, fireman can rem tin within burning buildings for upwards of an hour with safety and comfort, so far as respiration is concerned. Bupf-M.o, Cleveland, Toledo, and the lower lake cities generally, will not, be charmed at the discovery of the scientists that " Lake Erie, now the pathway of a mighty commerce, will in time dry .up and become the home of new towns and cities." Careful surveys hftve shown, these authorities assure us, that while Lake Michigan has an average
dept h of 1,801 feet, Lake Superior of
000 feet, and Lake Ontario of 500 wet, Lake Erie has an average depth of only 120 feet, which is constantly decreasing, owing to the sediment carried down by tributary streams and the constant abrasion of the limestone shores. Another danger, too, suggested several years nince is the wearing away at Niagani. Year by yer, it is stated that the height to the falls decreases, lowering by degrees the level of the river and the lake. The work is not rapid, of course, but the scientists say it is ai certain as fate.
Criminal Secrecy. The martinets of
the medical profession insist that it is beneath the dignity of a regular physician to advertise. If a member of the faculty nhould discover an absolute remedy for any disease it would fce a breach of professional decorum to offer the specific for sale through the journals of the day. Scorning such prujedices one of our leading practitioners is now making known to the public through the columns of over three thousand newspapers, one of the most comprehensive remedies for disease that has ever assauged the sufferings of humanity. Dr. Walker's California Vinegar Bitters, although comparatively a new medicine, has already attracted tho attention of millions in both hemispheres. It has been advertised through all the channels accessible to advertising enterprise, and the result has been the preservation of thousands of lives, and the prevention of an un told amount of physical torture. Dr. Walker thinks that the " greatest good of the greatest number" is the true object of medical science, and hence he l:eps boldly out of the contracted circle of professional exclusiveness, and places his Great Restorative within the reach of all.
