we are not in the nsunt o! making charges without being prejurcd to support them ; and as thi.s one has been denied by the Democratic press, we offer evidence the fc'ilowinji letter from a distinguished. Democrat of Cincinnati, withholding, for personal reasons, the name of the gentleman to whom it was addressed : Cincinnati, O., Aug., :.'i5, 72. .Esq.: . "DkauSiu: respond to your inquiries of tlic 22(1. Tho Chairman of thcOhio State Cent "til Committee complained to me in September, 186S, that while Tammany had sent but 7,000 to carry the October ejection of that vear in this State, it had sent $-10,000 to Indiana to elect Mr. Hendriek Governor. A movement to raise 25,000 for Mr. Hendricks ,in Kentucky, was started in 186S, at Ionisville, by an ex-Con federate (icncral. On learning that the Democrats of my native town, Lexington, were to be assescd for a part of this sum, I went over and stopped the operation by showing conclusively that Mr. Hendricks and his gang had betrayed both personal and political confidence, and were therefore unworthy of party support. Mr. Hendricks betrayed both Pendleton and Hancock. If any respectable Democrat can get from either of those gentlemen a contradiction of my assertion, I will give
I one thousand dollars to the church j of which. Mr. Hendricks is a mem
ber in Indianapolis. i am, and have been from youth, i. Democrat, and wish the Democracy of Indiana all success, but when Mr. Hendricks denies the assertions of my Seymour letter, then he invites a retort on my part which I would rather have withheld for a future occasion. uou, wcni into me election in lviarcn on the platform of Grant's re-election. Kesnlt The State redeemed irom last year's defeat, and a handsome Republican gain. - Connecticut in April Re2ublican gain. Rhode Island in April republican as usual. Oregon in June, a month after Greeley's nomination at Cincinnati Redeemed from years of Democratic rule, and made Republican through and through. Large Republican gain. North Carolina in August Redeemed from Democracy Republican gain over 7,000. West Virginia in August Greeley Democratic candidate for Governor beaten in a Democratic State. . Vermont in September Republican by more than two to one, and s gain of 5,000. At the last election, in 18-70, the Republican majority was 21,309. This year, according to the New York Herald, the majority is 27,000! The World concedes 26,000, and the Tribune 25,000. The "tidal wave" for Grant and Victory is still upward and onward. Greelejtism is a "lost cuuse."
The widow of a man who recently died in Newton, was asked by the visiting clergyman if her husband bad) any convictions before he died. She told him she didn't know for certain, but she had heard him frequently say before he was taken sick that he "never could go that Greeley." 19 Five Hundred Bottles lr. Mott's Herb Bitters, have been sold in this county in the last six months every bottle giving satisfaction. The rebel archives, now in possesion of the government, show that Thos. A. Hendricks was in collusion with the Confederates to incite X esistanoe to tke drafts and embrass the government as ranch as possible. No wonder be turns his back upon the past. But like Banquo's ghost it. wll up at most unexpected times and haunt htm through life. Down with the Traitor. j The Richmond (Va.) Enquirer, i while lending a reluctant support to j Greeley, perceives th j hand writing ! on the wall. Tearfully it says:j "We honestly believe, with all the: light before us, that tho nomination ! of Mr. Greejey at Baltimore will j secure the election of Grant. With ; that conviction, could we insist up- j on his indorsement ? JVsonlly wo j fcaso nothing against Mr, Greeley, I more than every other Southerner I way have against hirn, but we do; pot now believe he z available. 1 We fear a repetition of the disaster at ; William,, Jnd. Voorhccs, in his famous speech against Greeleyism, sa;d : If I did otherwise (that is if ne supported Greeley) I would be a dishonest man, unworthy of niy own respect or the respect of anybody else." Now he says supporting Greeley is the next host thing h j can do ; that is the next best thing to being honest and worthy of respect is being dishonest and unworthy of respect. Said John R. Cravens,in his speech at Bloomingtcn : "Who ever knew where to find Grant .r notify him of anything ?" We are under the impression that Buckncr, Pemberton, Bragg, Joe Johnson and R. E. Lee didn't experience much trouble in finding him. Perhaps, however.Mr. Cravens alludes to the trouble he experienced in finding the President to nctify him of his desire for an office. From the Bridgeport (Conn.) Leader. One Utile Bridgeport Iudustry. The immense business of tho Howe Sewing Machine Company of this city may be conceived from tho fi.ct that they have manufactured, during the seven months of this year, ending Aug'ist 1st, 9i,000 Sewing Machines. They manufactured in the twenty-five working davs of July, 12.500 completed machines, wliich is 50C machines for each working day, besides manufacturing tho full parts of 123 machines daily, whicnaro sent from hero to their factory in Scotland, to be set up or assembled'." It will be seen from this that ibis one manufactory is making ovor one first-class cwing Machine per minute, during every working day of the year. Thin company, with all its facilities, are unable to keep up with its orders, and is doing everything possible to increase them. It can safely bo computed that they will complete not? less than 170,000 Sewing Machines the present, year, and as tho lowest wholesale price of" their cheapest machine is $45, the product of their manufacture will not be less than 7,500,000. We do not publish this statement with any desire to "puff the importance and amount of manufacturing industries of this city, but we see so many long articles in the columns of Stat3 papers, dilating upon the magnitude of tie business of their manufactories, whose sales are but a few hunrcsd thousand dollars, that we could not resist the temptation to give a few figures connected with our own. With ho above the following from the Indianapolis Journal will alio be of interest :
The management of the interest of the celebrated Howe Sewing Machine in this
city has recently undergone a change. Mr. A. K. JoS8e)yn, formerly the able and efficient manager of the affairs of the Singer Company in the States of Indiana, Ohio,
Illinois and Alicmgan at this point, has now assumed control of the business of the
Howe Machine Company in "he territory embracing the greater part of tho States
01 inuiana, Illinois, Michigan and Iowa. His heudquartcas are located temporarily at No. 70 AV-st Washington St., Indianapolis, but will soon be removed to Chicago. It is hardly necessary to speak in this community of Mr J.isselyn s Uiilifications for tho position. His well known energy, integrity and bnsiness capacity are sufficient
guarantees tint the affairs of the company will be pushed forward in an honorable and business-like manner, and with a degree of Mircatt com men si ruble with the great meiit of the Howe machine, which has a wo-ld-wide reputation. Mr. Foltz, tho former agent here, will continue to act as the locril agent of the conpany in supervising its interest in this city and' county, under the dircctioh of Mr. Josselyr.. Messr. Chap'dl and ran Duzcr, the old agents f r ihe Howo machine in Michigan, continue in charge of the local agency in Detroit and Wayne county, also under Mr. Josselvn's supervision.
