By high feed cows are liable to disease; but if judiciously fed and kindly treated, there will bo little trouble frcm abortion or other ailments. M. L. Gooddt in New England Farmer. A New The. for Flax Seed. The. follovrj ing statement, copied from nrt English paper, is of great interest to the American farmers, as it seems to open a new use for flax seed, and may greatly enhance the price, to as to make flax growing profitable. The new use is in the manufacture of an article called linoleum, deriving the name from linum and oeum. It is said that it. will be a rival of caoutchouc, or as is commonly
called, India rubber. The new article is manufactured of linseed oil by oxi
dizing it until it is solidified into a re
sinous substance, as we frequently land
it when it has been exposed :o the at
mocphere. It is stated that " in this state it is combined with resinous gums and other ingredients, whereupon it
assumes the appearance ani most of
the properties ol India rubber. Like
India rubi er, it can be dissolved into a cement and mod in the manufacture
of the material for water-proof clothing It can be used as varnish for the prsi
tection of iron or wood, or for coating
ships' bottom?. It. is as good as a com
mon cement, having properties similar
to tho marine clue made from India
rubber and shellac. It is easily vulcan
ized by exposure to heat, and by this
means becomes as. hard as the hardest
wood, and canablu of the fir est polish
The great variety ot uses to wntcn ii can be applied in this form viill at once suggest themselves to the reader. The manufacture of linoleum hits thus far been made to produce floor cloth , lor which it has nroved itself well adapted.
Combined with gvound cork, it is spread on a stout canvas, the back of which
is afterward water-proofed with oxidized oil. The fabric is then printed
bv means of blocks in t he ordinary way.
'Ihe floor cloth thus produced is pliable, noiseless to walk upon, w.ishes well,
pieserves its color, and rolls up like an
ordinary carpet. It is very durable, and its component parts will not de
compose by heat or exposure me sun or air. as will India rubber. J Y,

A Fixed Fact ik Pharmacy. Considering tho multitude of diseases, it is amazing that we live : Jn view of the countless remedies for them, it is won
derful that we die. Unfortunately, however, all the diseases are realities ; whereas most of the "remedies" are
humbugs. One exception lo the latter rule demands the recognition and npprovnl of the press. W o refer to Dr. Joseph Walker's Vinegar Bitters. Of
the Doctor himself, we know nothing ; but of his medicine we can speak from observation, for it soems to have found
its way into almost every hou-ehold.
Probably it is more extensively used in
this country, as a family remedy, than any other preparation, although it has
not yet been betoi e the world three
years, wnerever we go we near oi it,,
and whenever we near ot it, the com
ments on its efficacy are enthusiastic. We have questioned sufferers from liver complaint, remittent fever, fever and
ague, chronic headache, vertigo, irregularities of the bowels, indigestion, rheu
matism, neuralgia, gout, kidney diseases, and affections of the lungs, as to its effects, and the uniform answer has been, "ii i doing me goott." Believing that " what everybody says must be true," we have no hesitation in admitting that Vinegar Bitters is the Great Medical Success of the present century. Com. Reported Discovery of a Snbmerged
City near M. Angustine. "" During the heavy gales which prevailed Inst fall, the tide, on one occasion, was d.iven so low in the North river that a remarkable discovery was made. About seven miles north of St. Augustine, on the west shore of North river, tho remains of an ancient city were disclosed. Several wells, walled in with
coquina, are now visible, under water j
but the foundations of the houses can
be only felt with a pole. On the occasion of the discovery, a gale bud prevailed,
lor tour or nve days, trom the north driving the water out of the river to an extent never before known. Further
investigations have also brought to light a coquina quarry on this same f-ito ; and, what is the most remarkable, the quarry
is in the midst ot a dense hummock, and Svhich any one can see now by taking the trouble to go there. The rock
is of a quality equal to any on Anastacia
lt-la.nd. and the quarry has been ex
tensively used, doubtless for the purpose of building this city, or settlement for one or the other it certainly was. St. Augustine (Fla.) Press, April 13.

three years of age, which go dry two
months previous to calving, that f ucklo their calves only a day or two, will seldom have any trouble from miscarriage I have often not allowed the call' tt suck at all. Tie up the cow at once ant milk her, and feed the calf. The cal:' may not do quite as well, but the cow will be more quiet, bellow less wher turned to pasture, seldom have eorti teatj, and tho calf can be put in tin same pasture, with the cow, if I raise it As a general thing I have taken care of my cows and milked them myself. They have been treated with kindness, and know nothing of being kicked, whipped or pounded. I never had a kicking cow, and when I see notices in the Farmer of such animals I ii.lrr.i03t wonder that jople at e not ashamed to complain, as J think there is no need of having kicking cows, if properly managed. 1 have generally raised my cows from calves. From the first I treat them in 6uch a way that they like to be handled.. When 1 milk a iiei.lor for the first time, 1 soften the teats with milk, begin very moderately mid as easily for the i.nimal as possible. If she step-t round, 1 talk to her soothingly, but never strike or kick her. Thus t routed lhey will soon learr. that thej are not (joing to be hurt, ami will stand still. A heifer once calved when I was away from home. I wont out in the evening after getting home tnd milked her i:a the lane, for the first time, without trouble. I havo never fed much meal, or grain of any kind, or roots, as 1 have not made a buvincss of selling milk ; still I have kept on a or two cows during the winter lor milk for the family. Selling milk may probably be made profitable where farmer!' live near a village or c ity,

A Sonora Story.
The following rich story is rolated by
a Sonora paper, at the expense or
oueer cenius who vibrated between
that town and Orecon, as " advance'
acent of a concert troure, and who,
though pretty clever m ' selling tne curiously inclined, does not always come
oil hrst best.
Frank Ball, traveling in a vehicle
bearinc it etronij resemblarce to a ped-
ler's cart. Old lady rushe out from a
nouse by tne roaa siae. ine loiiowing
colloquy ensues : Old Lady ''Say, what have you go to sell ?
Ball " 1 am traveling agent, madam
lor the createst menaeena of .ancien
or modern times, which is shortly to be
exhibited in this section, affording lo
the inhabitants thereof an opportuni
ty of viewing the most stupendous collection of animals ever before ex
hibited."
Old Lady "You don't say. Have
you any 'elephants?'1 Ball " We have, madam, six elephants ; but these constitute a comparatively unimpoitant part of the show. We have living specimens of bipeds and quadrupeds, who roamed over the earth, not only in the antediluvian, but also in pilocene and postraioceoe periods, embracing the megatherium, with six legs and two tails; the inhthyossaurus, with four eyes ajad three tails ; the gyasticus, with no eyes, two noses and four tails ; the pleiiosaurus, resembling Satan in shape, which spits fire and breathes sulphur, and many other specieB, too numerous to mention. We also have a pious lawyer." Old Lady" Well, I declare." Ball "But, madam, the greatest curiosity by far of our exhibition; is a learned and classical educated monkey, who waa brought up a Mohommedan priest in tbe mysterious regions of the Great Deiert of Sahara. This monkey talks with fliiency all the modern languages, besides Latin, Greek and Hebrew. He can repeat the ten commandments, the emancipation proclamation, President Lincoln's laat message, and performs the most intricate examples in mathematics with rapidity, ease and accuracy. While being exhibited in Washington he actually repeated a long Bpeech of tho President. This monkey corresponds Beautiful young lady suddenly sticks her head from tho window and calls out : " Mother I mother I ask him why they let the monkey travel so far ahead of the other animal.!"
The Pope's Blaek Cat. Ths Journal tie Borne, in contradicting thu report as to the dinner given by the Pope to the Prince and Friticcsa of Wales, stales that almost the only guest ever seen at the table of His Hclinees is a black cat named Moretto. Moretto even enjoys sometimes the privilege of eating fiom the fame plate in his master, and of being caressed ly tbe august hand which dispenses so many benedictions. The rat in, indeed, so fond of tbe Pope that he mews piteously when etiquette and ceremony neccf-titnte a temporal y separation. When the Pope celebrates

A correspondent, writing from
Athens, curiously contrasts the mixtures to be found there of ancient and modern civilizations, liailroads spin their trains amid the temples of three thousand years ; steamers dash their swells upon the Pireua, and the scream of their whistles resounds from
Athoa, Pentelicus and Cytherou to Olympus and the heavens beyond their gods. Dr.
Aycr's world-renowned medicines, those
consummations of modern science, are posted on the Acropolis, tbe Parthenon, the Areopagus and the Thesion, while the modest cards ot Cherry Pectoral, AyeHs Sarsapa-
ruia, Ague cure and 1'ills look from the windows of the shops in the streets of Athens, where they are sold. 2T. T. Sunday Globe.
