The Perils of the Sea.

The Iosb of the coasting schooner

White Swan, on the rocky shore of

Martha's Vineyard last Monday, furnishes a tale of suffering and heroism

which ought not to pass unnoticed The vessel was a small one, of only 141 tons, and was on its way from Calais :c

New York, The gale of Monday night

drove her on the reef which makes out

from Cape Poge, and early in the morn-

ins siie struck about a third of a mile

from shore. Six men were on board of

her, and, unable to make any effort xo save themselves, they clung to the rig

ging, while the ireezing water con

tinucdly broke over them. The wreck was s;een at dawn from the shore, and a

boat was brought from a town some

miles distant with which to attempt

th.5ir rescue. The sea, however, ran 50

high that it was madness to think of

launcning tne boat. All ttay xuesaay, and through the long night that fol

lowed, the shipwrecked men were ex

posed to the cold, the fierce wind, and

the icv water that sweptover them. On

Wednesday, a steamer was got under way from Vineyard Haven, and stalled through the heavy ice of the Sound to

make an enort to save them. A wha.e

boat was carried on the steamer's deck

and on neanne t.ie wreck it was

launched and manned by six stout men

who, at the imminent hazard of t.aeir

lives:, and after suffering severely from

the cold, succeeded in saving the entire crew of the wrecked schooner. The

rescued men were all badly frozen, and

had been fo. twentv-eisht noun ex

parent certainty of death ; while the boat's crew that rescued them was also

frostbitten, none of its members escap

Tho Phbsix has paid its Chicago losses, in amount nearly $400,000, from its net surplus, and has been enabled, hy the confidence of tbe people and the consequent accumulation of funds since that lisaster, to meet all liabilities without calling on its stockholders for an assessment, selling a security of any

kind, or borro-ving a dollar. The great success of the Company is on ing to its safe, conservative and honest management.; and the officers now present a record of losses paid, and sound and available assets that the management may well feel proud of. The officers are men of experience, integrity, and long training in their

business, and have piloted the Company through fair and foul weather from its modest beginning to its present strong position. Although the business is very large even the most minute risks arc surveyed and located with skilled judgment, thus the continued prosperity that attends the Company. The Phenix Insurasm! lli-;re seems to be no question aDout tne potency ol its tonic and alterative properties, while it possesses the great negative recommendation of containing neither alcohol nor mineral poison. That it is a specific for Indigestion, Biliousness, Constipation, and many compiaints of nervous origin, we have reason to know ; and we are assured on good authority that as a general invigorant, regulating and purifying medicine, it has no equal. It is stated that its ingredients (obtained from the wilds of California) are new to the medical world ; and its extraordinary effects certainly warrant the conclusion that it is a compound of agents hitherto unknown. If popularity is any criterion, there can bo no doubt of the efficiency of the Visebab Bitters, for the sale of the article is immense and continually increasing. Com.

What could be prettier than a knot of Easter-flovfers, snow-drops, violets, or lilies of the valley, painted in water colors on -he white Bhell, or sketched gracefulTy and lightly in sepia or India-ink.
