(loubtedly be, each day will witness your progress, your increasing .success and usefulness. Your position in society will give great influence for good or for evil, and you will lie held responsible for the character of that influence. You should wield it always for good, for progress and the elevation of humanity. Vour Alma Mater, and the cause of professional education will justly claim your efforts in their behalf ; and it will be yonr duty at all times, to the extent of your ability to labor for the advancement of these interests. All honor is due to those noble men who have founded and sustained hitherto, Indiana Medical College; those men who, unaided by State munificence, or patronage from any numerousaud poweiful organization, by tl.eir own energy, zeal, and self-sacrificing devotion to the cause of higher and professional education, have within the short period of loss than three yenrs, established and put into successful operation in this capital of our own State,
a nieaieui c;ouege, winen, in the number of its students and in it reputation abroad, will compare favorably with any similar institution in the land. Young gentlemen, you will continue to second the efforts of its Trustees and Faculty in advancing the interests of this noble and glorious enterprise, which is an honor to this city and to the Commonwealth of Indiana. It should lie taken under the fostering care of the State, and amply endowed, and thus its permanence and success should lie secured beyond the possibility of failure. There ia no good reason why Indi
ana should be tributary to other States for higher and professional education. She should have a model university, in the fullest sense of the term, completely equipped, and furnished with every facility for instruction, not only in the department of literature, science and the arts, but in all the learned and industrial professions. The youth of this Stane desiring to study medicine, law, or any of the arts to which science is app)iedr ought not to be compelled to go abroad for education neceeessary to make them proficient in their several callings. Indiana has wealth, population and abundant resources for the education of her sons and daughters at home. Why should she pay tribute to Michigan, to New England, to Europe, at the rate of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars per annum for that which she could furnish better aud eheaperat home? Patriotism, a liaidable State pride, and every sense of honor, demand the removal of this humiliation. Indiana's war record is most glorious; her common school fund the largest of any of the States ; her mineral and agricultural resources almost unlimited; her population nnd wealth rapidly increasing, with a system of benevolent institutions clustering alound her capital, that would do honor to any commonwealth. Why should she not be equally noted for her educational institutions of highest grade? Why should she not furnish all the facilities and appliances for professional
'education, that can be found at Ann
Arbor, i ale or Harvard? Our next Legislature should, among their first measures, make ample provision, by liberal appropriations,- for this purpose. Indiana Medical College, and Indiana State University, with its Law College, should be placed on a footing equal, if not superior, to any similar institution in the United States. Now to all this, young men. Alumni of this College, you will assent with nil the earnestness of your warm and noble hearts. When you shall have returned to your several places of alM.de, impress these great wants of the State upon the minds of tiie people ; and use your influence with the members of our next General Assembly, before and after their election, while they ore candidates before the people, and after they have convened in the legislative hnlls, for the accomplishment of this grand enterprise. And before many years have passed away, we trust that our State will be adorned with a university complete in all ItsdepaitmcntR, whose light shull not pale in the presence of the most renowned universities of the world. Go then and work: work in this and every noble came. Be active, self-reliant, brave, honest, faithful, true to yourselves, your country, humanity, and your God. When fife's work is done, you will be called from labor to reword ; then another more glorious festal hour awaits you as you pass the grand assize, approved by the Supreme Judge of all, and with the plaudits of angels, you shall receive the crown which lasts forever.
