Wiixiak A. Gabe, Editor and lroprietor Colo Wisim-In iss" snow fell to the depth of eighteen inches in the month of December. This s tended as far south as North Carolina and East Tennessee. That winter was unusually cold. In 1839 we had another deep snow, covering the same extent of territory, and accompanied with the usual cold. At this period nearly all the peach trees and grape vines in Central and Northern Indiana were frozen. On New Year's eve, 1864, at 6 o'clock in the evening, there was rain, but at 11 o'clock at wight, the cold was so intense that it was dangerous to be out. A number of persons in thisand bordering States were frozen to -death on that night. The first day of January, 1865, was so intensely told, that but few people appeared on the streets. The turkeys cooked for the occasion, in many instances, were left to cool on the table, while hungry people hovered around red hot stoves, The last four days of this January,18r2, have been ie coldest of any corresponding period within the recollection of the oldest inhabitant. What is the matter? Has the earth stopped its revolution in the region of thick ribbed ice?
Learning Trades. When we see how few of our boys are learning trades, we naturally inquire, who is to do the skilled labor of the next generation? and unless ma
chinery shall be made to perform much of the labor now performed by hand, we do not know how people are to get along hereafter. Why is it that so few learn trades? One reason to be urged in excuse of boys, is the difficulty thrown in their way by the trades-unions, which have undertaken to keep np prices by determining the number of boys which- may be admitted to their ranks a apprentices. Another reason, and the main one, is the growing dislike to the manual labor which must be performed by the mechanic Our boys allow a fondness for neat clothes and white hands to drive them into pursuits that are only fit for women, and work for a small salary in measuring dry goods, or in counting rooms, until their youth has passed, and then follow any chance which may
present itself in after years. The

A married lady, at New Albany, recently fell into the river, and would have been drowned had not her cries attracted the attention of her husband, who, mistaking her in the dark for another woman, worked like a beaver to get her out. His rage was fearful to behold, when he discovered who she was. The Kokomo Tribune recently declined to insert a fulsome eulogy of a deceased titizen because the departed owed two year's subscription to the Tribune. " It is well to be "square with the books" before sending your obituary notice to the printer. The State officers give notice that the distribution of the Sinking Fund, in accordance with the act

The Corydon Democrat propounds the following conundrum to the first class in trigonometry : "If a poor, lene youth ot Corydon, with a waxed end to his mustache, should write to a young lady in Corydon to meet him by moonlight, alone, and the young lady's old mother should come in on a tansent

"It's noPi.acv.kok a Woman." So said a young husband in Lawrence to his wife a few months ago, when she, tired of staying alone, took her three little children to the billiard room and took a seat by his side. "It's disgraceful," said he, looking daggers ai her, "I know it," continued the injured wife,, "and you have borne the disgrace so long mv dear, that I am determined
henceforth to shr.re it with you," and she took out her knitting work and settled down for the evening. Her husband persisted in urging her to go home. "I will go," said she, "when you go, and not before." He was evidently a little disconcerted in his playing' and went home a little earlier than usual. The next evening the programme was acted over agaiu. This time the young husband went home a little earlier than before, and carried the baby himself. That was the last he was ever seen in the billiard room. A similar occurren!e was acted a few
months since, not a hundred miles from the county ?eat, but this time it onlv lasted one evening. Ladies

About once in two years the statisticians regularly inform us, with all that solemnity peculiar to a new thing, that they have just discovered that married people live much long-'-r than unmarried ones. A French savant finds that in 1,000 persons, betwtec 25 and SO years, the per cent, of mortality for married men is only 6.2, while for bachelors it is 10.2, and for widows 21.8. The widows will please take notice that they are in twice the mortal danger of any one else, and it behooves them to consider immediately how they may be saved. There are many who could not quietly look on and see a wealthy and beautiful widow die unaided. The office of Brown & Hanna, at Greencastle, was crowded, one day last week, -with about fifteen pcr-
sans on whom the National Bank Lad eeceived notes for collection, to the amount of 2,800, in favor of the patentee of the humbug known as Drake's Hay Fork. They propose to resist payment, on the plea of fraud. Saturday evening two little sons of John Paris found the dead body of ft young man named Aleck Hodges, in Mill Creek, near Stilesville. He had been out hunting a stray horse the Thursday previous, and arrived at his father's late in the evening, where he was requested to remain until next morning. Instead of doing so he set out for home ml was not again seen alive. He was found in the stream with his head and face against the bank and out of the water. Some bruises were found on the body, and a sum of money was missing, which leads to a suspicion of foul play. He leaves a wife and one child.

Mr. Voorb'.'es, in his recent catxl. speaks out his opposition to the

Mr. V. is in favor of a grand convention, to be held some place in the West, for the purpose of denning the principles of the present Democracy. In this, he is certainly right, for undoubtedly the Democratic party is in groat need of a platform, as it now stan Is on a mass of negatives, aud is placed in a very ludicrous position before the eyes of the people. "Vorrhees would be at a greater loss, to-day, to define the principles of his party than he was a few years njo, when called npon to do so by the Hon. Thomas Nelson.
