c.ers death
January 3d. 'f 1 e Bolton Evening News gives tfio following aeconut of tho coenrrenee: A series of farewell performances were being given prior to the menagerie proceeding to Bury, and an extra performance was announced aud took plac.i at 10J Vclock. Attached to the show was a man named Thomas Mace arte, whose professional appellation was ' Masenrti, the Liontamer, ' aud he at this extra performouco entered the lion's den for the last time. M'looarte was a young man, not moio than thirty-fonr years old, but ho bad been associated with traveling exhibitions of this kiud from ; very early period. He had stern experience that ought to have tanght him eantion ; he bad previously lost an ana when performing with Klessrs. Bell ;md Myers circus at .Liverpool. He bad previously been trained by Messrs. Butty as a liont.imer, and having joined them for a short time, he was engaged by the late Mr. Mandors to succeed Maceommo. He was a oryboid and adventurous man. and beeu frequently cautioned respecting liia rashn?tis. The unfortunate man commenced his performances on Wednesday evening, when he was hardly in a proper condition to do bo; and, having exhibited the gorilla and the serpents, he entered tho lions' den. At this time it is estimated five or six bundled persons were present, and the five lions in the den were put through tlieir performances with the usual success aud applause. On all general occasions heated bars of iron and iron scrapers are in readiness, but on this fatal evening the matter had been neglected. The live lions were all powerful animals, and the unfortunate man, on entering the cage, noticed that a blaek-maneu African 1 on whit h had only so recently its Monday last bitten his hand appeared very restive. He consequently fixed bis'eyes on it. and this in some degree diverted his attention from an Asiatic 1-on known by the name of "Tyrant,'' against whom ho aaA been cautioned only that morning to keep carefully to his'instructions. It is necessary here to not that when performing lions are tamed there is a line drawn, or wlint is known as "the office," in technical phraseology, by which the beasts arc taught to regard that line a; a limit beyond which the pnlormerm;ist not pass, knowing, if he does so, the consequences to be expected an; most ' dangerous. The presumption is, that this line was overstepped, and Mrs. Manders' opinion, whose cxpcricr.ee in these matters, Mid who suggests this us a primary cause, is entitled tr consideration. The
"offieer' having been passed, Maecarte, who was attiieit at. n Roman gladiator, was returning his falehionto its sheath, ifid slipping, fell on the floor of the den. Tyrant fastened on him, seizing him bj the haunches, aud then the Af ricau iiou fastened on his armless lihoulders. Maecarte immediately called upon the keepers for help, and meanwhile to fire. He then drew the tihort Roman blade which formed part of his costume, au 1 commenced lighting desperately with the lion Tyiant, thrusting the sword into its face, mouth and eyes. The crowd, as is usual in such cases, crowded panicttriekeu y round, and effectually prevented the approach of the men who were used to the habits oi the animals. The shouts of the audience, the desperate anil manful struggle of the fated man, and the smell of the blood which was streaming from the buttocks of Maecrte, incited the other animals, and their savage instinct was awakeuec.. A third lion an Abyssinian one seized him by the ribs, and f :ien a five-year old lion, aud an especial favorite of the lion tamer, caught htm by the head, literally scalping him, fje flesh hanging down his neck The treacherous favorite hail no sooner accomplished this work than he returned quietly to his corner. The deadly struggle progressed, and Mr. BirchalL who hud from the first been most active, placed iron scrapers in the fires to heat tliem. Pistols and guns were discharged, bnt they, unfortunately, were only loaded with blank cartridges, and the blazing of gunpowder failed ?.o drive the a n mals from their quarry. The police went in generous haste, and with a lull appreciation of the danger of the man, to the neighboring shows, where lire a-.ms could be obtained, aud returned ai'ier a minute's delay ; but that delay seemed au age, and the toy weapons tle.it are used at rillo galleries were discharged in rapid succession. Meauwhilo the irons were heated, an iron bhutter to separate the animals in the cage when an opportunity offered was ir readiness, and Mr. Birehall and an li -sistutti succeeded in beating oil' three ot the animals. The fifth, having in the meantime scented ami tasted the biood which streamed out of the carriage, added his fangs to those whieli hid already played such havoc with the human form prostrate before tlio.m. The sliding door was pushed in, three ot the animals, being driven away with hot irons, were separated, and then the lion that had sti.ed Maecarte by the shoulder w;is driven in a corner. The shutter was pirtially opened to drive him among the others, when a fourth infuriated beast seized him just above the boot, and dragged him in :gain among them. Then tho frightful work vent on for a lew sickening ami horrifying moments, every person present fearing to see him to-n to pieces, and Mrs. Munders, who is slowly recovering from a paralytic ttflectiOD, by a great effort crawled out, sis it were, oml by her e!oar head ami experience gave prompt directions. Hot irons were now available, and the br itc-s being driven off by these most teirifying weapons, the poor and almost pulseless piece of Immunity was was drawn out from the place it was fated he never more should enter. He sustained sufficient aeusibility to s-ieak to his warm-hearted colleagues a few faint words, praying them not to take him away to receive medical aii!, as ho knew that he was a end man. His anxious friends, with the kindness which is always so beautifn ly manifested toward each other by men engaged in tbia kind of occupation, carried him tenderly, although they might have guessed that tueir efforts w ould too soon prove to be fruitless, to the Infirmary, where, after a few moments, be breathed his last, after muttering a few incoherent sentences. Mr. M Mire, the honse-stirgeon, with his assistants, wert on tno spot, and every available appliance that could he suggested wan ready for use, but the poor "gladi itor" had been " wounded unto death," and had passed beyond the reach of pharmacy. As the shattered frame was borne past Mrs. Manders he faintly waived his hand and gave her at expresj ive look, which convey? I the words that lie was past all hope of aid. Many of the shots tired entered the ho-jies of the animals, and they received great injuries oefore they were driven off their prey. The scene in the luftBogerie can only be figured by those wbo were present, and cannot be iiaapned by those whose f ortuno it was
to bo absent from so terrible n scene. It may not be uninteresting to state that the lion " Tyrant" is threo and a hall years old, a id hod been brought up from a whelp by Mrs. Manders. The animal having been a favorite, it was during the early days of its training allowed to run about that portion of the caravan usee as a habitation, and it freely gambolled with its mistress. Another peculiarity is that the sire of this animal was the one that nearly worried Maceoine some time ago. We learn fron inquiry at the Infirmary that the only arm the deceased had was streaked with deep gashes from the shudder to the hand. The scalp was torn right back, and from the hip j to the knee, where he was seized from behind, the muscles are completely torn out. leaving the skin in the condition, as it were, of an empty bag. Tliero are pieties of flesh gone from the ribs, and the bo ties from the pelvis, which are the strongest in the human frame, have had pieces bitten clean out.
The Invalid, A l'en Picture. See her pallid countenance, but a short time ago the picture of ruddy health, the envy of the school and the pride of the household She was always welcomed by her Bchool mates, for her lithe forri and pleasing disposition carried cheerfulness into their ranks. Iiligent. punctual and exemplary, obedient and graceful at home, she won the hearts of all. But alas, we are sorrowed. Those rosy cheeks and ruddy lips arc blanched by eon sumption. The voice once so enchanting in laugh and song is feeble, husky and supplanted by a hollow cough. Let us approach her couch gently and take her hand. !Do not shudder be cause of the feeble and passion less grasp. The hard onco so hearty and plump is cmaci itcd and shows bony outlines, while the cords and tortuous veins are plainly mapped upon the surface. The pulse that bounded with repletion, carrying vigor to the whole system and inqnirting life, beauty, vivacity, health acd strength, is delicate to the touch. The feeble heart can not propel the thin, scanty blood with force. Must we lose her while yet, in her teens ? Companions and friends gather around wii.li words of cheer and consolation and depart with moistened cyesand silent steps. Must we lose her if No ! there is relief ! We can stay this destroyer ol our happiness and not suffer the loss id so bright n gem. Something more is required now than dietary and lr-genie observance, for nature calls for aid and she shall have it. Take this pleasant medicine. It is invigorating. How it allays the irritable cough, improves the appetite and digestion aud sends a healthy tingle through the frame. Tho blood is enriched, nervous force increased, and the heart bounds with a new impulse See her face brighten by degrees; the
color is returning, her voice is getting clearer, and pleasant words are spoken. The strength falters yet but is gaining. Let us take her out in the warm sunshine. In a short time she will be aMe to go without ai l.a cheerful girl. This delightful medicine must be God-blessed. It is restoring health to our loved one. She is emerging from her sickness sweeter an 1 nobler than before,
aud I)r Pierce's Golden Medical Disj eovery must have the credit. It litis raised her. Sold by all first class dnig1 gists everywhere. 582.
T1IE DUVAL BUFFALO HUNT.
A Wile who ('irruuiiiiivigated the (xluhc in .Search of her Husband. From llio N. S". Bnti. Mary Ann Wentworth was the only daughter of respectable New England parents, whose a icestors came, over . n the May Flower, and whose grandsires had fought on the side of freedom in tho Revoluntioin.ry War. At eighteen Mary Anne was the belle ot her native village, and had a host of suitors. She married John Thompson, a you ig English sailor, and soon after their marriage he sailed for London, ami three years after vard wrote to lii wife that he was about to sail for China. This letter changed all the yonng wife's plans. She determined to leave her chill with her pa rents and take passage
for Europe in the next steamer. But
before she arrivci I in London her bus band's vessel had sailed, ami having as
certained tlmt the destination of the
vessel was Hong Kong, she persisted in following in the first ship going thither. A month expired ere tho young wife could find such I. ship, aud on her arrival at Hong Kong i;he learned tint the clipper in vhich her truant husband served was on her way to Sydney with a cargo of tea. Again she started; but her trip to Sydney proved an nn fortunate as her trips to London and Hong Kong, for there she learned that
her husband's vessel had just sailed for
JNew lork with a ;-argo of wool. Luck
ily an American stun was up for ew
York in a few days, and the captain, a
Jiglit-licartellnnkee, hearing her story, and admiring her courage and devo
tion, gave her n jlreo passage back to
her native land. She arrived in New York about, two weeks ago, penniless and destitute. This, however, is not the worst, for the m;m in pursuit of whom sho had circumnavigated the globe, she found living here with a w. -rt hless woman, aud was constrained 1 1 summon him to one of our civil courts ere she could compel
him to recognize her riehts as a wife
anl to provide for her support. This he iUd in Justice Hartrnan's court yesterday. Dam in's Man. From (be ftiiH I'ramitoo Ballet tot. . Choke, in his Commentaries upon the Old Tastament, asserts his belief to be that the serpent who tempted Eve war. not a serpent, but a monkey, and places the foundation of that beli'i upon the facts that tho Hebrew word of the origii.al text means both morkf.y and seiiient, that the lieiug who talked to Kv! stood upright, ami that the monkey, though formed in every respei i to walk like a human being, runs on it. hands and feet, and
"eats the dust of the earth." A farther illustration of this theory occurred on Howard street Tnesdav. A venerable looking organ-grinder, iecompaiiied by an active little monkey, dressed in red, wis patiently turning out his dilapidf ted melodies for the benefit of a couple of servant-girls, when he was sudi.enly surrounded by a group of school-children, boys and girls who at once became devoted to the monkey. The latter seeing an apple in the bauds of one of the boys, suddenly ceased its gambols and snatching the fruit ran nimbly up a tree just by. Tho boy cried, and his companion laughed, while the Italian alternately swore at and coaxed the chattering thief, bnt in vain, until the monkey, of its ow n accord, caino swifty d vn, and, s ringing in front of a pretty lilt io girl with long curl', deftly took oil his jaunty cap, and bowing politely, handed her the apple. N.tw that monkey knew very well that the pretty little descendant of Jive had no right to take the apple, and. of course could only been actuated by the "apple " instinct he had derived from his gr 't ancestor of tho Garden of. tlt-Ntllt of til' NpviiiiI IliiyN Spni-f . Camp A'exM (Jan. 17) Pinpalfli t tbe Hannan City Journal f I'mnmmvt. Yeslerday, the second and last day of the Imperial buffalo hunt, opened and closed moat auspiciously in all quarters. The morning was glorious, aud ti e sun shone out in all its grandeur. The party for the day's hunt was made up as follows: The Grand Duke Alexis, mounted upon i superb black charger, dressed in gny hunting suit with a revolver by his side Count Rodiseo, Generals Sheridan, Ord, I'almev, and Custar, dressed in lull suits of buckskin, similar to that of Buffalo Bill. General Forsythe, Colonel Mike Sheridan and six or seven other officers. Buffalo Bill, acted, an on the previous day, as the guide, but was assisted by a Sioux, who, for i-liort, was called " Shorty," about thirty soldiers, and Spotted Tail, Chief of the Sioux, accompanied by eight selected warriors. The hunters encountered a herd of buffalo after traveling about fifteen miles. Here the hunt commenced, and was followed up in a very exciting manner for hrHirs, biit owing to the uneven character of the country, it required hard riding aud ;nre st rategy than on theprevi ms day. The (band Duke killed two buffalo, thc the Indians eight. General Sheridan killed two in two straight shots, " Sin rty " three,LientenautStevcus one and Buffalo Bill and the other members of tin; parly killed forty, making about fifty-nix in all for the day. Alexis had a buffalo calf that he killed and brought in, alio the head of one of the buffalo that he killed, which he will have preserve! and Rent to Russia. Everything passed off pleasantly ; nothing occurring to ninr the pleasure of any one. The day continued as it had begun, most beautiful. The Grand Puke was greatly elated with his sneeusK, and threw off all formality and appeared as "one of the boys" throughout the day. Ou the return from the field of slaughter, when he canght sight of Camp Alexis, he began firing i salute with his revolver, which was t; ken up by all the rest of tho party, and returned by the persons awaiting their return at ihe camp. TIk day's sport closed with grand pow-wow and w ir dance in front of I he Dukf's tent, and was witnessed by Alexis and nil his party. After the war eanec, the Duke presented the warriors with fifty dollars in half dollar silver pieces, twenty beautiful blankets, mid a. number of hunting knives with ivory handles. Previous to the war dance. General Sheridan called Spotted Tail to his tent and presented him'with ti scit 'let cap, ornamented with heads, a general officer's belt, and a nice dressing gown. He give them as a present from one chief to another. Spotted Tail made a speech in which he asked to have more than one tinder, as he
Miougur, ins iruie could do hetter wliete they had competition and also asked permission b hunt south of the Platte until his farms could be made to support his people. Colonel Mike Sheridan's horse failed him before tl e hunt was over, and had to be led to camp. The animal rode by General Custar liied soon after reaching cau p from hard riding, having travelled over fifty nine? during the day's hunt. This evening was spent at camp in hilarity until, near midnight, when the tattoo was sounded and all retired in good order. This morning the camp was active at an early hour, and at. '.) a. m. the party was moving toward t his place, ind the bands which remained at camp enlivened them with music until they v.ere out of hearing. Seventeen miles on the return trip they stopped for lunch and got fresh horses. The only incident worthy of note occurring on the return was the capsizing of the ambulance
containing Count Bodisco, l)r Aseh, Lici t. Tudor, and others. They were coming down a hill when the ambula nen swayed around and rolled over and over, The great wonder was that nobody was in the least injured. The ambulance had to be renewed. During the hunt Mr. Eaton, an art ist of Omaha, took several views of the camp, the hunting party, the Duke, Spotted Tail, and other groups, and has received Alexis' orders for several bun Ired copies ol each. The party reached this phee nt 5 o'clock p, in., to-day, not quite so fresh looking as ou Ate start, but n .it much fatigued. G 'lieral Sheridan and his party dined with Alexis in his car. After "dinner was over, Buffalo Bill was presented by the Duke with a large purse of money and it very valuable scarf pin in acknowledgment of his services on this occasion. Tho excursion leaves here at 10 o'clock to-night for Cheyenne, from which point they go to Denver. Generals Sheridan, Custar, Forsythe. and others accompany the Duke "from here. The entire party are perfectly satisfied, and the whole programme has been carried out without a thing to mar it, and tho weather has been die best that could be wished.

Value of Hie Weather Rcpoi ls. The War Department weather reports proved very valuable during the recent st orm. The ('arson Kegister of December U:jd says : We have heard of a gentleman largely interested ill tie? lumber and freighting business, who made something over f:',tt.H) by conforming bis business tiarsaetions to the prognostications of his barometer during the three days; next preceding the commencement of the late storm. On Friday he discovered the mercury was sinkuig rapidly, and at once telegraphed liia agent "at Reno to ship every pound of freight he could possibly get away. The barometer sharp had a large quantity of lumber up in the monnt iins. He impressed eveiy team and man he could find to get the lumber down. Ou Sunday the workmen and teamsters wanted to knock off', saying they could finish the job ok Monday. The barometer was si ill sinking, however, and the observer p islicil his lumber through on Kunday, and the result was a raving of over !f'.'J,0"'0, for on Monday the storm was terrific and the loads impassable. A roon wretch in Paterson, N. J., went from house to house on Christmas day trying to sella tumbler. A charitable lady purchased it for five cents, and procured his address. Visiting las house shortly afterward, the Christma?, dinner of the man, his wife and children, was found to be a five cent loal of bread purchased with the proceed:) of the sale of the tumbler. Divers could lind no other trneo of it than a sort of dimple in tho mud where it had disappeared. They probed deep, as a doctor would for a bullet, but with no success, and. considering tho nature of the harbor bottom, some twenty-eigh t

its present bod for many centuries.
