And here I sit, as 1 have sat tTpon n thousand moonlifrht nights, To listen to the minster chimes And watch tho monastery lights. I catch a glimpse of foam-white sea. Breaking upon a dead, black shore; 1 see the trees their wild arms toss, I hear the breakers roil end roar. Ah, ulnds ! shriek wildly down the beach, In ealiaer scenes I have no part ; Tho storms alone suit to my mood Of all, arov.nd tho Sac;rcd. Heart. Ah, dread to me are the still hours, When the ttea slejps In peaceful calm. And through the duky corridors I hear the Sisters' hol.v psalm. Dread Is the bush of early dawn. And dread all soft and peaceful times : My heart is calmer wh-n tile storm Deadens, or w holly drowns the chimes. Ah, Christ ! It is a fearful thing, In such a holy place to live. And hear, in every priyer and chant, God's voice, conimandirig to forgive, And still to feel tn every throb Of my wild heart that sense of wrong. Which cannot, will no! lie appeased, Hut still grows stronger and more strong. Upon my knees I spenci my days, I scourg j my flesh with penance sore, Yet still my heart the vll wrong holds, Refuting still to give It oe'r. And sometimes throiigb the night I hear The Tempter, in whoee power I live, Whispering, ' Some wrocgB so cruel are, Thit it were sinful to forgive." And then he takes me biSk again. Back through the darl; and dreadful years, And piteonsly shows me, now, What I saw dimly then, through tears ; And hate and anger rag : again Within this mad and Impious heart, As if it were but yesterday, That raging passions madly start. And every time the bell rings out, That summons me to pralsa or prayer, A Sinful longing for the n-orld. And all that I enoouniered there, Yaa, oven for the love which gave This oruel wound unl a my life. Comes over me, and tears aui rends Me with a fierce and (.eadlj strife. Ofc, Mary-Mother ! hear me call ! The sun was setting when we halted before a few houses at the ontskirl; of a village. 1 was immediately taken before a fat, swarthy officer, who announced himself as General Bea. "How many troops have you at Puebhv?" he asked in a stern tone. " I don't know," I replied. "What!" he demanded, raising his

" If they should miss us onr lives would not be worth ft 'oalaco." " How far is Pnebla off " I asked, after we had been riding for a long time. " Scarcely more than a league," he answered. " Juiit then there oame a fiound from

the retj that made me shudder. It was

a dull, rattling noise, accompanied by si distant shout.

" Heavens ! ' I cried, " wo are pur

thing like an oath. Faster and faster we urged our beasts, while nearer and nearer came the clatter in our rear. At last our pursuers were close upon us. I struck the rowelsleeper in to the flanks of my jaded steed! Daylight was just breaking, and in the gray morning mist I saw the steeples of Pueblu rise before Diy eyes. I turned my head backward ; at least a score of horaerr en were on our path, and hardly more than a quarter of a mile distant. It was at this moment the horse of my companion fell. "Fly!" exclaimed Antoaia's father, ' I can save myself yet, " and he bounded off among some bushes mhL was hidden from my sight. It happened that there was a small

party of dragoons just entering the oity by another road, wlaich brought them m the rear of my persuers. As soon as they caught sight of the Mexicans they uttered a wild shout and dashed for them, saber in hand. Now it was the turn of the enemy to fly. tbev lid aecidentllY been cAutsht in

Gallant Death of a Brave Firemen, An English fireman, named Jose ph

Andrew Ford, recently died in a gallant

manner, and has awakened a nearly expression of sympathy and admiration

throughout England. Here is the

story :

" A chemist's house on the 'Srny's l"nn road was discovered to be cn lire. It was two o'clock in the inorninjj the stillness of the dark hours. The alarm was given, and, fortunately for ex persons whose lives he saved, Ford wa i in

charge of the eBcape at the Holborn

station. He found five terrified people

at the windows of the naming build nc,

vociferating for help and, scorniog the perils of his adventure, he landed them

out of danger, one by one. But his

task was not ended. A woman, maddened with frifrht, ap.

peared, shrieking, at one of th upper windows and between her and the

brave fireman sheets of flame were play

ing by this time, tlis final went was full of the most obvious danger. He must pass through fire to the irindow, where the hapletis creature was cla nor-

ing for life. But Ford was equal to the task, and again boldly mounted the ladder. The canvas bag of the machine caught and the fireman wat irrevocably doomed. For some morien Is he remainedon taucledin the burn ing mass

literally roasting alive. v.Tien he

He helme'v was actually forced into hi s

fearful character; and after a few hours

of unspeakable agony, lie died anero,
