' aiircifie GravityTest for PotatMi. It is generally known that the value of potatoes depends upon their specific gravity, and that the heavier the potato the gro:; ter amount of nitrogenous matter it iontains. This has suggertei'1. the ides1, of a convenient test by 'Which the exec Hence of different varieties' citn reat ily be determined, and consists in the use of saline solutions of -uliffertnt degrees of strength. If, assumiDg one variety as n- standard, we make a solution of such strength that -the potato will float about at th.; middle of the ina, neither failing to the bottom nor rising to tho surface, and apply the samo test to other potatoes, wo may conclude that if one falls to the bottom it . s bettt j, or i:t' it- rises to the t jp it is p orer, than tho standard. A series of standards lias been suggested, therefore, by Dr. Jfeslee, of definite percentages of salt and water, thus producing a sliding seal applicable under any circtuastanoefi for the test in question.

A recent pre cess for preserving grapes through the v inter, introduced by M. Tromellat, of Marseilles, is commended in agricnltarf.l jonrniils as answering its purpose bsttar thsm many of the improved met hods of the day. This depends upon the fact that, in the ordiniry storagt; of grapes, a portion of the v,-ater, both of the stem and berry, -is lost by evaporation, so that they dry up unless moiRturo is restored to them. To obviate this difficulty the bunches ire cut in such a manner as to leav j a condsiderable portion of5'4h- adjacent woody portion of the . vine, tmd are then suspended over a vessel filled vith w iter, so that while only Longing near the surface of the nuter the ends of the stems are i miners e-1. As the moisture evaporates from the grapes it Li restored by capillarsabsoption through the stem, and no change takes plaee. By means of the arrangement thus indicated M. Trwinelk t has succt etlcd in keeping grapes from one fear over into another, fresh and fu r as in the moment of jrotheringA d his method is now used on a large ujale iu Paris and elsewhere.

The San Jobe ((l il. ) Mercury contains thib singular story. A remarkuble case, eitlier of mistaken identity and fr.tnd or willful or constrained pcrvcrseues rceeiitly oc-eurrt-d, and still exists, in this county, which is deseivim; of something more than a passing m -lice. Thero resides with his mother, in Sauta Clara, Chas. W. Sikes, n younf man of good reputation, worthy and lionust, but of iiuiu ble cii'cumstiinces in life. There also resides in the sarre town, with her parents, Miss Hattii! Burnett, a granddaughter of Governor Burnett, an esl imableyounglady of eighteen, of fine accomplishments and unsullied character. These young people, it is asserted, formed an attaclu 'lent- for each oilier, against the wishes of the girls' parents, who sought by various mean to break the intimacy bet veen them. Young Sikes was positively forbidden to see or speak to the girl. But everybody knows, who litis arrived at maturity, what such forbith .ings amount to. Of course lie met her clandestinely at least it is so positively stated by those who casually surprised them in their stolen interviews. This state of affairs existed for several months, until tho 4th of September last, when Mr. Sikes accompanied by a young lady who gave hor name as Hattie B irnett, called at the law office of C. C. Stephens, of this city an acquaintance of both parties and stated as their object in calling their attention of lieiug united in marriage. The lady remained in conversation with Mr. Stephens who by the way, asserts that ho tins known Miss Burnett from infan cy, and could not be deceived in her identity while Sikes went to the clerk's office for a lisence. He soon returned with this needed instrunent, Justice Stewart was called in, a id the parties were duly married. They returned to Santa Clara, remained tu.-oughont the day at the young man's luine, and then the lady went to her own home. Now comes in the mystery, romance or what you may call it, of tho whole affair. The fact of the marriage leaked out for Sikes made no socret of it and soon reached the ears of the girl's parents. They asked hor it it was tree. She said no, and seemed greatly surprised at the intimation. Sikes claimed that she was his wife; and tho girl was brought to confront him in the presence of Mr. Stephens. Here she denied everythi ng relating to the alleged marritvgti had only known Sikes as a passing a squaintance never intended to marry him the whole thing was a fraud uomc woman bearing a resemblance to her had been procured to personate her, dire. And iu this she firmly persists at the present timo. The parents believe the girl tho public, mostlj. sympathize with Sikes. Some think herfears have been wrought upon until she dare not own the truth. Others don't know what to think. It is certainly :t queer case. The parents and all parties are most worthy people."
