Like an invading force, the cholera sends fatal shafts in advance before discharging its regular broadsides. Berlin, as yet free from the scourge, is fist being drawn within its deadly shadow. " During the last few days fatal cholera cases have occurred at Cantzic, Elbiug, Altona, Coblentz, Leipsic, and Vienna. In other words, the shores of the Rhine and the Danube, and the centre of Germany have been siurultcueously visited. As usual in the earlv i taces of the disease, in which
it is restricted to individual cases, a!
controv ersy has arisen m some oi those towns whether the enemy they have to wrestle w'.tb is the real Asiatic fiend or a bad sort of dysentery. This is a dispute which nt the begining of the epidemic c?.c not be well decided. On the one hand tbe cholera does not always display its extreme virulence at the very outset': on the other hand, the worst cases of dysentery have exactly the same outward symptoms as cholera, and even to the anatomist display the same peculiar disorganization of the
body. In aacution jo tne localities jus; touched by it, the 6courge con- . tinue? to rage at Konigsberg and in the neighboring districts of East Prussia. At Konigsberg abotit 140 persons are seized daily, of whom one-third succumb. BDSSIA. The intelligence we receive from Rus

on Auffu.t 21. Of these 30 recovered
on that day and 26 died, leaving 426 under; medical treatment. On the 22d there were 23 fresh cases, 22 recoveries, and 18 deaths. On the 28 the fresh cases amounted to 42, recoveries to
IS, deaths to 19, those under treatment being 40. On August 26 the sum total of all those in Xtlosoow seized since the beginning of the epidemic (March 13) was 5,055. Of these 2,340 had recovered r.td 2,354 were dead. A comparison of these hist figures with those recorded in the third week of August proveB that the mortality, which at one time exceeded half the number of cases, has latterly considerably diminished. In the neighborhood of the old capital, however, the disease lias not yet exhausted its virulence- In the Tergieft' Posad, some, fortv persons are being carried off
in every 24 hours. In the village Zub itchevka IS persons died on the 23d inst ; in the village of Svetogorova 16 succumbed on the same day; the hamlet of IsaroiT having r.o less than 84 viotime within the same period. This unfortunate Iaaroif was obliged to close its bereaved houses, and send its orphans to to monastery of St. Sergiua to be tiVKen care of by tae priests. From the interior of Russia we have enly fragmentary intelligence, which, however, is but too well calculated to leveal tho immense extent of this year's e pidemic. To begin with St. Peters curg, the total number of those having tae disease overages between IdO and 00 per day. There are daily twenty i-'esh cases, about as tuany recoveries and some t we! ve or tif oeen deaths. The reduction of the metropolitan mortality to these comparatively satisfactory fig ures is probably owing to the exertions of the police, who have been lately superintending the disinfection of the sewers and -cesspools with the utmost rigor. At Wina and Nisbai-STovgorod the application of the same strict disciplino has led to the same favorable result ; but in the small towns and in ihe villages, where people are very much lsft to themselves, the infection is spreading further and further, and without as yet abating in intensity. According to the latest advices, the provinces most visited are Mohileff, Voronesh, Biazan. Saratoff, Ynroslay, Novgorod, Witepsk, Kursk, and Tnmloff. In the last mentioned province matters hav8 reached a terrible climax. By the 12th of August the number oi sufferers, which on the first of that month had dwindled to 827, had again increased to 6,124, of whom full onekalf had died. Tho districts most severely afflicted were Tamboff and Bor-
iseeglebsk, in the formerof which 1,238
persons out of 2,oi0 s ized, died in less than a fortnight, the iatter bavins; 931
deaths in 1,206 se'znres in tho same period. That disastrous fortnight saw 208 deaths out of 284 seizures in the District of KoslolT, 1!I7 deaths out of 388 in the District of Lipetzk, 102 deaths out of 287 seizures in the District of
Morshansk, 103 deaths out of 266 seizures in the town of Kiransoff, &c. In Borissoglebsk the calamity is so great that the railway from that place to Zaryzine, on the lower Volga an important line which otherwise would have at
tracted considerable attention was opened withont any demonstration on
tue part ot the government or public.
That the Emperor will not undertake
his contemplated journey to the Cau
casus in the present stato of the Volga provinces, through which he would have
to pass, may be regarded certain. Nor do the western and southern regions show any improvement. In .'Iraolensk, whole villares are said to ii'i dying ouf. Orel, the sanitary state . I which is never very good, has seen its railway laborers infected. The town of Tula suffers little ; the worst off is the country snrrounding it. From the 12th to ttio 18th of August, 163 were taken ill in the distriot of Veney, of whom 77 died. In the province of Kaluga the sum total of deaths, according to the latest advices, is 839 ie., rather more than a third of the 805 cases reported to the police. In the distriot of Medin alone, 71 died cut of 161 seised, between July 26 t. ad Aug. 2. In town of Charkoff 73 fell ill and 30 died on August 18, tho sum total of patients oa the day following beieg 132. In the town of"Pnltava 58 foil ill and 25 died between August 13 and 15, the number of patients under treatment on the 17th being 31. From Itostort-on-Don, Nioholayeffsk, Taganrog, Kursk, and Ekaterin'orlav we have no numerical returns. At the latter place it is chiefly the troops of the Thirty fourth Division of Infantry that barter, being encamped in the open air. The tad register extends to south and east. From Nishni-Novgorod sonthwards the Eastern governments of Penza, Aatracan, Orenburg, and the Lral territory are touched. At Penza the dist rict the most smitten is Nishne ,ovo, which alone haa one-half of the dead in the province. In the town of Attracan the fist case occurred on the 11th of July, from which date to the 6! of August 552 cases and 326 deaths ai-e recorded. The 2d of August was a black day to the place. On it died 56 out of 116 seized. And, that no point of the compass should be exempt, cbol w a appeared in the beginning of ths current month at Archangel. The ra

The Murder of the Age-! Brother uud fester of J;dm Harper. Telegrams to the Cincinnati papers give some details of the murder of Jacob Harper and his sister at Midway. Ky., on tho night of the 10th inst, It appears that the bloody deed was done with a meat-ax belonging to the houce, and that the old man was killed outright by blows on the head with its blunt end, while his sister was so fearfully gashed with its blade that her re covery is impossible. The ax wa found covered with blood, concealed in some bushes in the front of the house. The old man when found was lying with one foot hanging over the bed and his his head fearfully mashed. His sister Betsey was alive, but the b-'ck part of her head was broken iu. The couple thus assasinated were very old. They were the brother and sister of John Harper, the owner of Lonefellow. The murdered man was a farmer, and about eighty years of age, and his sister was not much younger. Another brother Adam, v.ai the business man of the family, was killed by guerrillas duritig the war. In the confusion and excitement there were of course innumerable conjectures as to the motives that prompted the com mission of this terrible crime, but the supposition most generally accepted is that it was done by negroes, who formerly belong to them, and who expected to get the money of the old couple after death. It is said the negroes believed a -vill had been made to that effect, and they were tired of waiting for the end to come naturally. Three negro men, who were found lying concealed iu a neighboring field, and whose clothes were very bloody, were arrested and lodged in jail. Harper and his sister lived on tho old Franklin road about three miles from Midway. The old people were the only occupants of the house tho servants sleeping in a little frame house some fifty or sixty feet back of tiie .,,.,- ,1n.n11i.,.v rPl,.p ... ...n.-, mii'O I
