to possess the remarkable tendency to tifieate lor a liko quantity of land, with have the plane of its leaves directed i out regard to the length of service, pro

A letter, inclosing a diagram of the leaf of tho plant, has since been received by the department from S. J. H. Snydpr, of Morovia, Kansas in which the opinion is expressed that the plant does possess thu quality at
tributed to it. The writer says
vided he was regularly mustered in the service, to-wit : 1. Officers and soldiers who hiwo been engaged in any battle in any of the wars in which this eountry has been engaged prior to the war of the rebellion.
Having been a residentcf Kansas for
sixteen years, I have had abundant opportunity to become fully acquainted with the plant and its habits, and I am fully persuaded that the course north or south is so infallibly indicated by its leaves, thf.t I would not hesitate to follow their direction for hundreds of miles. The leaves of the plant from which the accompanying sketch has been made were taken from my orchard which has been tilled for years, and the plants cut up and turned over and under, and everyway: vet every time
Tiiey come up, eitner iroin t-ne oia roots i laws heretofore

There cun be no question of this fact and if in a group of these plants, hero and there a leaf varies a little from the true course, the appearance of the stem and its relation to tho other leaves show the reason for such discrepancy. The average of such a group is infallible. The stalk of tho plant is from three to five feet high ; leaf about twelve inches long, and llower resembling a miniature sunflower. Mr. Siyder y5 it is sometimes called polar v.-eed, gumweed, resin-weed, &o. The last names are given to it because cf tb e resinous gum whioh exudes from ite stem and leaves, especially when wounded. Raining Fruit Tree from tlie Seed. Mr. A. Czerny, of Austria, states, as the result of long-continued observation and experiments, that the strongest and best fruit trees can be raised from seed, thus obviating a great deal deal of expense and disappointment to the pomologist. According to his observations, the extent and ramification of the roots of a healthy tree is to that of its crown in the ratio of three to two so that the action of the routs is always preponderating. In this relation he finds the reason why fruit seeds from trees, budded or grafted upon indifi'erent stocks, have alweys been found unreliable, end he endeavors, as the first step, to obtain good trees grown upon their own stock, tha seeds of which, he says, will reprodu-je their psjents with certainty. To this end he layers a branch of a good tree, which, when well rooted, nerves him as a stock, into which he intioduces buds or scions of such varieties as promise to improve the original fruit. By judicious cross fertilization le obtains fruit, the seed of which will propagate, to a greater or less extent, the good anilities of the varieties used in hybridizing, and thus a new fruit is originated, which, when suitable, can always be reproduced from its seed. Sue h trees, says Mr. Czerny, aie more heakihy and vigorous (having never been wounded by the knife), bear
earlier, and w.ieu accidentally injured

Another Mastodon in Chautauqua, A few days ago some laborers eng ig-
ed in removing muck from a swaiiipy section of the farm of Mr. Joel I. Hoyt, about two miles from Jamestown, found the remains of an unknown animal much larger than those of any exist.'ng species. On Saturday Professor Love repaired to tho place and succeeded in exhuming a large number of bones, which undoubtedly once belonged to a largo mastodon. They were about live feot below the surface, and much decayed. One half of the upper jaw was quite perfect, and the teeth seemed as sound as ever. Two pieces of the tusks were in a good state of preservation, though the ivory was so decomposed that it could be cut with a knife. One piece is about four feet long and seven inches in diameter. The teeth measure from root to crown ten inches, and ono
of them weighs five and a half pounds.
Professor Lovo estimates the entire tusks to have been coeh twelve feet in length. Buffhfo Commercial. Bismarck. An English lady who has visit ed Bismarck at his country seat, gives a pleasant account of tho nun of "blood and iron." At homo he is bluff and hearty, goes a-fishing, and makes fnn of his nico old wife because she doesn't read tho newspapers. The Englishwoman who relates all this, Rays she made the visit iu consequence of this unceremonious invitation from the Chancellor: "I say, Countess, mind you bring Miss iu July. I like girls who have the frankness to let me know that they think me an old humbug!" Bismarck's magnificent Russian horses a present from parties in Moscow are creating n great sensation. They are said to bear a striking resemblance to Josh Billings' favorite bird, the "muil," which "wares its wings on tho side of its head." An Unpnblished Story by Hawthorne. It is a little singular that Hawthorne wrote a tale that he succeeded in effectually concealing from all eves, and of whose existence no one knew anything until a few weeks ago, when his daughter, in overlooking his papers, laid her hand upon the unsuspecting treasure. It is pronounced one of his best things, but of that we shall be better able to judge when it is published, as i soon will be by J. R. Osgood & Co. Hawthorne was a "strange, thy, reticent genius, with a remarkable faculty of shutting himself in from the world"; and it is remembered that while he lived at Concord he was engaged on a work which he never published and of which he never spoke.
