The advantages offered to settlers in the north western portion of Clark and the western portions of M irathon connties are probably unsurpassed in the vast region of the great west. Very few are aware ot this fact, and as a general desire is manifested for aknowledge of the country lying beyond t oe bounds of the recent new settlements, it affords us much pleasure to be aide to give some information concerning it, which we have obtained from Mr. H. W. Smith, a gentleman vho has just returned from a trip to that section. At the same time some interesting facts wDl be given of the present operations of the Portage and Lake Superior Railroad Company, whicl . possessed of a large land grant, has the power to prosecute its important enterprise with nothing short of complete success.
Our informant tells ns, from personal observation, that the land in townsh ips 56, 27, 23, 28, 29, 30, 31, and 32, ranee one and two east, embracing an unsettled territory, 12 miles wide and over j 40 miles long, is of th richest and most productive quality, admirably well adapted in every partcular for the kighest state of cultivation. The country is rolling, he ivily timbered with oak, maple, bass-wo;d, etc. In the first live townships named there is some pine,
and occasionally hemlotk and spr ice trees are noticeable. In township 30 there is plenty of hemlock with some balsam and spruce. In 31 and 32 spr ice i more abundant. A corrpondent o:i the New York World, writing from London, August 3d, refers to the late meeting of the General Councils of Internati orals, held in that city, from which it appears shat agents of ' that organization were at work in Spain nnd had been provid ed with funds to create disturbances there; that information had beei. received announcing the establishmer t of an international cln o. and starting a newspaper, entitled " La Commune " at New Orleans, America; that a section had been formed in Washington, which
was composed principally of journalists, Washington being the great palit-

Mazzini was attacked foi his opposition to the o rganization, it bung declared that he never was a member of it, and the statement, is made that the worlungmen of Italy were with the association. this city yesterday afternoon that five persons had been suffocated in n coal mine, near Eddyville, some time yea terday nioryjag. The names of the unfortunate VBPIS were Geo. and Wm. Briggs ; Maulon and Auna the son and daughter of Wm. Briggs, and a hired man ramed Greer. The parties in question lived on a farm three miles east of Eddyvilie. On the farm is a coal mink which had long been abandoned, bnt which it had been decided to reopen. The son and daughter went
to the mine for the purpose of dipping
out the water. A ladder wan placed in the shaft, and the non proceeded to descend. After lie had gone a certain distance the carbonic acid gas, commonly known as "fire damp," suffocated him, and he fell: down dead. The daughter, alarmed at, the situation of affairs, also decended the ladder, when she too, fell a victim to suffocation. The father, missing his two children, went to the s iaft to see what had become of them, and took with 1 'hi his brother and hired men. One after another went down, until all live had fodlowed one another in rapid succession to an untimely death. The case is one of the most remarkabla of the kind on record and cannot fad to elicit tho sympathies of every one who reads this notice. The family were among the eldest settlors in that
section, and were highly esteemed by all who knew them. Wheii tho train passed Eddyville, yesterday afternoon, two of the bodies had been recovered, but no signs of life were to be found. P. S. Since writing the above we le.trn that the younger brother of Mahlou was the first to go down into the shaft, that the foul air suffocated him, that Mahlon seeing him, went down and placed him in the bueket, and that he was drawn up and his life saved. But Mahlon, who went to rescue him, never came out alive. Wo understand that George Briggs was n prominent candidate for the office of Representative frere that county, and that he expected to have been nominated yesterday.
