I'uils About H.iicj--Be-s. Then? are three classes of bees in a hive, the Worker, Queen and Drone. Queens nr.; raised by peculiar food and trtatmeat from that would otherwise produce worker?. Tlie worker is fiu undeveloped female. Workers, in the abst nee oi the queen, sometimes lay egg. Thesis invariably produce drones. The queen lives from tvo to tive years: the worker from two to three inontlu. in the working season, and trom six to eight during the season of rest. The queen is perfected in fifteen or sixteen days from the eggs, the worker, in twenty to twenty one, and the drone in twenty-four. The queen usually sommenees laving
in from seven to twelve davs after leav
ing the cell, and is capable of lay ing from two to three thousand eggs in a day. The impregnation of the qneen always takes place outside thi? hive, on the wing, and generally the fourth or . fifth day after leaving the cell. Excepting ill rare cases, .mo impregnation answers for life. The drone she has nu.ted with dies immediately. The eggs of an nnimpregnated qneen produce nothi ng ut drones ; and it is generally conceded that impregnation does not affect the drone progeny ; consequently, the ni;de progeny of a pure Italian queen is mire without regard to the drone she haj mited with. The queen an 1 worker are provided with stinjis; but the latter will use it upon any provoi ation, the former will only use it on her own rank. The drones have uo stings. One queen, is a rule, is all that is tolerated in a iiive : bnt previous, to throwing off ''after swarms," two 01 more queens are permitted in the same hive for a short, time ; but extra ones are soon disposed of. In case of superseding a queen, the old one is preserved until tje new on? is fitted to take her place. Queens have a deadly hatred for each other, and will destroy, if permitted, a'l queen larvp; or cells in
the hive, and vill fight each other until there is but one living one left. liees gather three kinds of products : Propolis, i'roir the gum of trees snd shrubs, for iasteuing the joints and cracks of thei- hives ; Pollen, or beebreuc, from llowers, for feeding theii youn;j and t aemselves ; and Honey, whieh constitutes the main food of the hive. Water Also curried into the hive dtirii g the b: ceding season for mixing with the fooi. for their young; salt is also made use of for the same purpose. Wsx like i at, is an animal product, and is seen ted by the bees in thin scales from lie under side of the side of the body. While doing this, they
consume lare quantities ol iioneysrrmi fifteen to twenty pounds for every pound of wi.x secreted. A fright- led bee, or one rilled with honey, is not disposed to sting. A stood s' Ararat contains about twenty thousand bees. A strong or medium hive, with a good layinguiietin, is never seriously troubled with the troth worm ; but a hive without a queen or a means of raising one, is sure to e taken by them. Bees re ognize each other by their scent. The lii stone or two weeks of the young bee's life is spent inside the hive, as nurse or wax worker. The rar.ge of a bee's flight for food is generally within two or three miles : much gr ater rane is of bnt little benefit to thcaa. Lie- ,S(o':k JournaU

The I nited States Oourt .f Olaims, liefore i late adjournment, decided t ease bef ring on certain private rights of redress of citizen against the government, which will affiet a large number of -ases now pending. Klias ,'v Morris Isrnwn brought an action in the Court iv ! Claims, wl .erein a decree wns rendered on April 1:1. The defence of the Vr.ited States in this action was, tivst, that the Court of Claims hadno jurisdiction, because its power was exhausted when

special laws relating to captured and abandoned property, and thai the decree in the present case was payable like any other general decree of the court, (fom the general fund. Touching the second point of the defence o! the pi vernment, the court says : "The Court of Claims was established to give legal redress to the citizen as against the government wnere lie would lave had legal redress as against, auothei citizen. Dr. S.nencor Cobbold, of England, has 'uieroscoiiically demonstrated the presence of thousands of entozoa in pork which ln.s been fed upon the produce of lauds irrigated with sewage. The introduction into the human system of countless entozoa, through the nied mo of cattle fed upon sewage-irrigation grass, and swine fed upon other food similarly produced, is regarded as a new danger with which the public health ia threatened. It is tho deliberate opinion of Dr. Cobbold that thousands of cattle in England are thus rendered nniii to be lif-ed as food. J 'lavor nail Color of Es;n. which were furnislied hint by the liev. I. N. Thompson, a well known Alethodist preacher of Southern ndiana. One of Mr. Thompson's parishioners had n very singul r dream, which ran as follows, as he related it to his family the m xt morning : lie dreamed that, in walking through one of his pasture fields he came upon a certain tree, near the path hi was following, and whicl. had an opening from rot, on uiif side. Near the foot of this tree, coiled alongside the ath, he saw in his dream a large yellow rattlesnake, ant this snake, his dream told him, had bittvii hint one. killed him. After relating the drentt to his family next iiioi-iiug, he eotici tided to gt to the pastil v, and there, beside the path at the foot ot the half ratted tree; lay coile.l up a large rattlesnake. Seizing a small limb from a tree lying near, he struck at the snake, but in doing so bis loot slipped aud he lei I upon the pt isonnus reptile, which bit him upon the cheek. He hast tned to his home, r .early a quarter of a mile distant, where, two hours lat?r he died in great agony. This story is an almost incredible one, but it comes to us from such u high source in it we cannot doubt its" truth.
