Tbo J.cw VorK Riot. Oa the occasion of the Orange parade in Njw York, on Thursday la'st, as was anticipated, the mob, oo.nposed of the Hibernian Societies, attacked the procession. The military fired upon the mob, and the result of the day's fighting was one

hundred killed and three hundred wounded. T lisdemonstratioi promises to bear fruit of the most bhtcr character. Societies in opposition to Catholocism are talked of, and large meetings are being held in various cities;, at which the intolerant conduct of the Cathrlic is severely denounced. This fee'.ing between the L'rotestaut and Catholic clement of tie United States cannot be too much regvetted by all lovers of peace ant. religious liberty, and may yet result in scenes oi bloodshed and cruelty, for which sectarian wars have a' ways been celebrated. The following are a few of tho incidents of tho New York Riot : "A Newark lad, while ridine" on top of an cmnibus, displayed an Orange handkerchief. A shot from a pistol struck him and he f ell from tho stage dead." "The following is a correct account of the .tilling of a woman aud a little girl, supposed to have been Mrs. York and her daughter, as given by an eye-witness: 'I was standing looking at the procession and crowd, and there was a great deal of excitement. Directly I saw a woman waving a handkerchief to an Orangeman, and I thought she was very imprudent, and had more courage than women generally have. Just at th.it moment, while she was in th'3 aet of waving her handkerchief, a burly ruffian stepped up to her snd placing the muzzle of his Sistol to her ear fired, and she lei! ead. He then turned around, and deliberately cocked his pistol, fired ft bullet into the little girl, and shefell. I think the little girl must have been 12 or 13 vcars of age.' "

"The scents at P-.'Hcvue Hospital baffles description. Some cases are very touchii g. Joseph Love, a young man t .veuty-one years of age, was otit of a situation, and was strolling by flth avenue to parade, when he received a shot in his head. Only yesfer&iy his young wife and child left Ireland to join him hero. It will be a sad talc to tell the poor woman tQ her arrival. Perhaps a sadder sight was tho body of a young girl, about sixteen, who had been shot through the heart. It is probable that the child never looked so prcjty in life as she did in death. The face was in perfect repose and a half smile played around her lips, as if when the death shot struck her she had been laughing at existing scenes around her." Sabbath School Work of the Sixth Congressional District. By virtue f a resolution passed at the last State Sabbath School Convention at Terre Haute, it is made the duty of the Vice Presi

dents of the several Congressional Districts to have held a Sabbath

continuance ::or oioaei or JNOnnal Sabbath School work. It has fallen to my lot to be held responsible for this work in the Sixth Congressional District. In its accompl shment, organization and co-operation are essential. Earnest men and women must see and feel the need of it and be willing to do their part in the organization

and conducting of an Institute that

it may be made a success. Every

county should be fully represented

in it, that its advantages may be

teit tbrougboiit tiie .District.

In the Report, below, of the proceedings of the delegates at Terre Haute, it will be seen who are the

Vice Presidonfcj for the several counties of the district. It is made their duty ty the action of that convention to effect county organizations, where they have not been made, with . view to a thorough

Sabbath School System throughout

the counties holding anuual and semi-annual meetings for the comparison of sentiment on the best method of organization, instruction, &c. It is hoped that the gentlemen there designa .ed will promptly and cheerfully enier upou the work assigned them, and make full reports to me, that I can have sufficient material to make a complete reportto the next annual meeting of the State Convention.

If any one of this appointment of

v ice jrresiQe!iis nnas mat ne cannot perform the duties desired, he will please signify the same timely to me, acoonrianying such information with the name of a suitable person in his county, to Jill the vacancy. Roekville, Terre Haute, Brazil, Sullivan ami Bloomington have been proposed as suitable places in which to conduct an Institute. The Executive Co nmittec will give the

citizens of these places time to express their interest in the matter, nd will determine which place is most eligible. Prompt action should be taken in the case, and letters adfessod to S. H. Potter, Chairman -t' the Executive Committee, at T erre Haute, or to myself. All persons assigned positions for

wrk, will plcT enter upon their)

respective duties without further official notice. Desiring prompt and earnest cooperation in this great work, and that it may prove a blessing to both the Church and the .State, I shall await your action on which success must chiefly depone .

The recent war between Germany nnd I-'ranec aroused .so muck interest on the part of our people, that it, was generally supposed at the time, that the earliest and best history of that great struggle, would be from
