POTATO POULTICE. Perhapsit is not generally known how much plensanter and more agreeable, as well as more eft'aeaeious, is a poultice made of potatoes than one made of bread. It keeps heat Ion ver and can be reheated several times and docs not wet the clothing. Peel, boil and mash the potatoes ; inclose in a muslin bag, and apply to the affected part. To boil them in hot water has a very soothing efl'ect, and enhances their valne. A poultice made of boiled beans is by some thought to be bet ter than potatoes but botli are worthy of a trial. TO KEEP JAMS, J1SLLTES, AND FItESESVES FROM MOLD. The closet in which sweetmeats are kept should be perfectly drv and cool.
If that is the cf.se, and the following recipe used, preserves will keep for years. Cut a round circle of writing paper, the size of the interior of the pot, and one about an inch and a half larger. Take the white of an egg and a paste brush, aud lay a oortiug of white of egg over the surface 01: the smaller circle, and then lay that piece on top of the jam, with tho untouched sides of the paper next to the jam. Take the large piece and coat ths.t on one side with white of tgg, and let the surface thus coated be the one turned inward. This circle in to cover the pot, aad the white of egg renders it adhesive, and pastes it firmy down all around the edge of the crack. A REMEDY FOB CEOCP. The following remedy was given bv Professor Brorson: "Let a he<hy person fill h;s lungs with pure air, then slowly breat te upon the patient's throat and chest, commenci.ig at the point of the chin, an :l moving slowly down to the bottom of the wind-pipe. Repeat for a few minutes, and it will give relief in cases where all other means fail." "A mother,'" writing to a medical journal, says m relation to that recipe : " My boy wits always subject to croup ; came near dying with t he rattling, noisy kind at about eleven mouths old. I saved him ivith water, aud ever after preventing a serious attack by watchfulness and water. But when three yearn old, I let him play in the brook

discovered this, aud ordered him to stop wasting his time with such foolish games. Henri was determined to go on with his interesting diversion, so, after much angry disputing, he was dismissed, with the character of being obstinate and iucurably vicious. Old Jaeuues, t he woodcutter, then resolved to try softening influence of education, and sent him to school, and furthermore placed him in charge of the cure that he might be taught his catechism. Alas! neither secular nor spiritual instruction seemed of any avail. His nchool life consisted of perpetual combat with both scholars r.nd master:

Paris was the scene of his greatest renown. Arago. Ohatenihriainl. Oee.rgc Sand, Alfred de Vigny, anil mail v others, received him with enthusiasm.
