has long been the spoiled child of

fortune in Texas, narierea in 1848, it has so long been the favored it of the State, that until recently

it has been of little use beyond that of a "pet." And were it not now grring signs of awakening from a "Rip Van Winkle" sleep, and com

peting with the otner roaas now i under wav, it would soon "sleep the nleep of cleath." But the whistle of the approaching locomotive from the north and east, screaming "competition" into the ears of the lazy monopoly "roused up the slumberer ere the morning star," and for a few months iast, thjre seems to have been a "whispering with white lips, the foe! thev came! they come! flhovtl and pick have begun to pick

and shovel dirt with astonisning rapidity. No doubt there is note "a mind forthe work." Self defence has demanded it. The cars are now running north from Galveston about 240 miles, or to about 100 miles south of Dallas. The route is from Galveston via Houston in a north west direction until it strikes Hill county, where it turns a little east via Dallas to Preston on Red River. The Austin branch leaves the main

line at Hempstead, thence ma Branham in a direct line to Austin, of which 50 miles are completed rrl in oneration. The company is

under contract tc complete the road j

to Austin by tht: nrst ol January, next. As stated in my last letter the, location for a denot of this road

to nnor ennnrorl T the citizens of

MW www- tf - Dallas, at the head of one of the nrincinal streets, one half mile east

of the public square. The cars are expected here in 12 or 18 months. The International Bailroad Is a gigantic -work of very recent origin. The company was chartered Aug. oth, 1870. Its initial point is on Red River, in the northeast corner of the State, opposite Fulton,

Ark., where it connects with the

Cairo, Little Rock and Fulton Railroad, and thence it runs southwest on an air line, crossing the Southern Pacific at or near Tyler, and the H. & Texas Central at Hearne, in Robertson county ; thence via Austin, San Antonio, crossing the Rio Grande at or near Saredo, to the Pacific Ocean at or near San Bias r Mazatlan. By examining the map, it will be seen that this road, with its connections at Fulton and Cairo, will form an air line of railroad from San Bias to Chicago, thus

connecting the latter place with the Pacific Ocean in a distance of little more than 1.500 railes. It is manned

bv a wealth comiiiv, aided by the

State bonds to th-3 amount of $10,000 per mile, drawing 8 per cent, interest per annum, and payable in thirty years, and exempt from all taxation for five years. The comnanv is required 1:0 have fifty miles

completed by the 5th of February, 1872, and seventy-five miles thereafter, annually. About four months ago the work began, now more than twenty-five miiesi are graded, and

me ues snu m uciug, Sixteen hundred hands are at work, and in a month or so the number will be increased to three thousand. The contractors are of those who built the Union Pacific Railroad. The work has begun at Hearne, on the Central Railway, and is progressing in both directions, southeast and southwest, and more rapidly

even than reqmred by tht charter. These are the most important railroads of Texas all of which are under rapid construction, and in which northern Texas is especially interested. The Gulf, Weetern Texas & Pacific Itailioay Has its initial point at Indianola,

and runs thence via Victoria, San Antonio to El Paso, forming con nection there wi.h the Southern Pacific. It has about twenty miles completed. By its charter it is required to have fifty miles northwest of Victoria in running order by the first of next January, and thirty miles additional built every year thereafter, until it shall reach San Antooia.
