4 Locomotive Let Loose ty Mischievous Boys. From the Pitlsburg Qamtte, April M. Last evening engine No. 7 arrived on time at the Connellsville Railroad Depot with the passenger train, and, after detaching from the cars and shifting several hundied yards above the depot on a side track, it was left with full head of steam on by tho engineer and fireman, while they wer.t for their sapper. During their brief absence two mischievous boys, named Arnold and Butler, got aboard, and reversing the engine, (started the locomotive along the track. They stuck bravely to their posts till a fearful rate of speed was attained ; and then, frightened, both jumped safely off, and tho engine and tender swept like a streak of lightening through the long depot, and on coming in contact with the bumpers or heavy timber-guards at tie terminus of the track, shivered them into splinters and broke the gate into fragments. Gaining the wharf, the engine was somewhat checked in its wild course towards the river by a deep gutter, but it plowed its way, to the great damage of the cobble-stones, some forty feet beyond its point of escape from the rails, and there halted with the wheels

deeply imbedded in the earth. The

locomotive was somewhat injured. Had the accident occurred durincr business

hours, there might have been loss of

Me attendir g it. The boys who caused all the trouble were not to be discovered after the accident.

autograph letters of distinguished men of former times, but which have since

proved to be skilful forgeries. Despite

ins neavy losses no nns steadily refused

to give the names of the parties who

swindled him so barely and systematically. Commodobe Asnunr's new yacht Livonia had a trial race with the yacht Guinevere, over the Queen's Course of the Victoria Yacht Club, Htarting from Bydo and thence to Yarmouth and back, round the Nnb Light to Ryde, beating her opponent three minutes. Neither of the yachts were in racing trim.

Henry Ward Beecher's Stepmother. New York Correspondence of the Boston Journal. It is well known that Mr. Beecher keeps a reporter in his church The form of Mr. Ellenwood is as well known as that of the Plymouth pastor. He has sat for years at a little table in front of the platform, and takes down everything Mr. Beecher says his notices, prayere and sermons. These Mr. Beecher revises before they nre published. Sharp, racy, humorous utterances, keen remarks, sentences thrown off in the heat of spealdng, witticisms that shake the Plymouth audience a the forest leaves are shaken by the wind, are often missed in the public report. Many of the iliustratious lose much of their point, because no reporter can take down the manner of their utterance.- Last Sunday morning he brought his stepmother on to the pintform, He described her as a woman of great excellence, but as a great martinet. Strict in her religions practices and teachings, and like the mistress of Dotheboys Hall, she gave her children weekly a stiff dose of the Capehism. She was the pink of propriety, and held in abhorrence all vain and trifling amusements. Dr. Beecher hud a weakness that of playing on a fiddle. He mixed up Yaniee Doodle, a round country dance, find Old Hundred, and he did not exactly know where the one began and the other ended. One day he was amusing himself on his favorite instrument, and struck up a genuine jig which unsanctified had been running in his head ever since he was a boy. Just at that moment his mother came in, and, catching the inspiration of the tune, placed her hands on her hips and actually danced a minute. Mr. Beecher described the scen.:. He stepped back on the platform, placed his hands on his hips, and showed the audience how his mother did it. He described the consternation of the children. He clasped his hands, rolled up the whites of his eyes like a regular mawworm, opened fiis mouth, drew down his hip, and stood the personification of rust ic horror. The whole scene was irresistibly comic. He wound, up with the moral that if his mother had danced more and plied the Catechism less he would have had a happier childhood
