TABM, aAADZli A'D HOUSEHOLD. Soal on Sheep. Two or tltree j ears ago I addressed a letter to Dr. H. 3. Eandall, author of the "Practical fShepard," making inquiry whether tcbacco ooze alone, unmixed -with otht;r ingredients, would core Rab on sheep. His repl.y was that he did not kno w certainly that it woald, giving lis experience in treating the diseaso as detailed in his "Practical Sheptud.'' Sinoe my torrespondenco with the doctor, I have become oogmzant of two -acts that prove to my mind thai it will, if properly applied, accouaplifh the purpose. The facts are briefly as follows: Two years ago last May, one of my neighbors, Mr. liamuel Hamat, dipped his flock in tobacco ooze, and it entirely cured them, but prevented hem from eontnictini the disease again, although they run on the common mixing with other s jabby sheep. At the sheering the following spring, there was no appeararce of scab so far as the ?ye could detect it. Ths other fact is thfs : Last May I dipped my own flock, numbering abort 600 head, in tobacco ooze, and at this date, March 9th there is no appearance of scab on the the sheep, altho lgh thev run on the, common with many other sheep that vere diseased with the scab. Now if it can be established beyond doubt that this treatment will cure the disease, and protect the sheep from contracting from one sheering until the next one, there will bo no excuse for having this loathsome, uwfnl disease in the country, and millions, will be added to the value of this lind of farm stock. My answer usually is Eed Top, and about 4 or 5 bushels, 50 or 60 pounds to the acre. The smaller quantity will be sufficient if the seed be clear and good, which it seldom is. Some people recommend white clover, say one-fourth, to be mixed with the Bed Top, and this does very well, but I prefer the pure Bed Top. What is the best time for seeding a

Tnrr.lp Cwltnre. Frcm the Bural New Yorl r. At ft recent meeting of the Ancestor Fanners' Club, discusssion of this Bubjejt took pla je, in which Mr. (ieo. Taylcr advocate d thick sowing upon the heavier eoils stating that the multiplicity of plarJfe coming through the soil at onc-a had the effect of breaking and pulverizing any hardness which migln exist in the land. In reference to freely knocking about the young plant at thinning time, M?. John Weir would not advocate such practice, but would be careful, when turaros were sowed in drills, to remove the earth from exouud the young plant. Mr. W. stf.ted, in answer to a question by Mr. Craddock, that he had sown alternate rows t turnips with superphosphate, and bad found the effect in the rapidity of growth of plants thns Ueatci-d to be very marked. He would also use manure, plowed under in the fall. Ms well, as ivell as superphosphate.
but would e tliat the manure was not too long. He had plowed manure in the drills in spiing, but did not approve of the ctuitom. In some Bpecia!
seasons this plan might be beneficial, but as a rule he found there was danger of having to leave the drills open to the sun so long as to dry out the manure, and it also gave much extra trouble. Mr. Baiiiwasnlwsiys particular noi to use long manure, becavise it was not so , soluble to the crop, and Mr Craddock fonnd that the presence of strawy manures was apt to cause the cultivator to pull up the plants. All the ! peakers laid down the rule that the great ssoret of success hi turnip cnltnra was thorough pulverization and preparation of the land. They also agreed that, the best drill up was as so hi after rain as the horses could be put upon the lard. In answert-.i Mr. Craddock,. Mr. W(ir
said be bad tried turnips on old sod, and found that, owing to she presence of a great mass of grass roots, the crop was very Imid properly taken care i. He would advocate .leaving tne plants fifteen inches uiiait, and tin -Is thirty inches apart, thus nee urn. g plenty of room to use the herse lro. nad iahtiring a crop of lage turnip!-, which were so much more easily handled. M::. Bain saic. if you sow upon old sod, manure he ivily, and then break up in the sprint: as soon as spiing work would al'.aw : there was one good point inthisplon, foi a turnip crop should be looked upon as a means for clearing ioul bind. As to the different modes of haiyesting, Mr. Bain t'aonght that the plan of plowing up the roots was very expeditiouti; taat and harrowing up mig:it be adopted in a diy season upon the aghter londs. In answer to Mr. Frank Gabbel, several were of opinion that any stubble land was suitable for turnips, as long as such was properly mantired. Mr. Weir recommended Old Purple Top, Sharpe's Improved and Carter's Improved; for late sowing, Gray Stone (white). The latter should not, he said, lie sown too early, its ..they had a tendency to become hollow and stringy. Mr. Postans, Sr., thought very highly of the Nimble Dick (white), beiDg very quick growers, siii.iLl, but very sound.

It proved to be tbe agitating house of Husey, Payne & Co.'s oil refinery, situated on the canal, o short distance south of tho Atlantic and Great Western railway. It exploded without a moment's warning, and without anv assignable cause, as far as known. The report was tremendous.

The buildi ng was made a complete and utter ruin, the work of desolation being finished by the flame-j. Other buildings connected with the works were nearly
Remarkable Mirur,, A writer in the Rochester Express records a remarkable mirage on Sunday afternoon last. He says that to one standing at Mount Hope there appeared lifted in the entire north sky the bine waters of Lake Ontario, while reflected
from them could be seen the mountains, j hills, valleys, bays and rivers, of the Canada shore inland for miles. The coast could be plainly seen over a stretch of fifty miles, and so clearly at one time that the forests could readily be distinguished. Those present who were familiar with the Canada shore could readily distinguish Bice Lake, Belvidere, anil oiher prominent points in Canada. The lake looked as though it had, by a great tidal wave, rolled upon Rochester, and covered one-half of the city, as no building could be seen north of Main street, or any land between the city and the lake. Oyster-Bearing Trees, A correspondent of the Alta Californian, at Magdalena Bay, Lower California, sends home the branch, of a tree thickly covered with oysters, clinging closely to the bark. This novel "fruit'' is found in great abundance in the locality from which onr correspondent writes, and the trees, which grow at the water's edge, partially submerged most of the time, are encrusted with a heavy growth of the bivalves. T'ie specimen referred to was a portion of a branch, which was two feet long and about two inches in diameter, the rough bark of which is well covered with oysters of ft fair size. 8" The Times says Dr.Walpole has lost his beautiful chestnut mare. Wiihi'i a rudius of half a mile houses were shaken to their very foundations, and their occupants not already awake tumbled out in the wildest "dismay. Windows were broken, the entire sash being blown out in many cases, crockery rattled, shelf or naments were thrown downpromissnonsly, and the destruction of property was considerable. The jar was very perceptible as far distant as Prospect street, and wna felt through the entire southeastern portion of the city. The damage to tho oil works is estimated at 825, 000, although it is quite possible that it will reach a higher figure.
How to Hake a Lawn. 1st. The ground should be dry -that is, jntiroly free from stagnant water. 2d. It must be thoroughly deepened by trenching or treuch plowing to the depth of 18 to 24 inches. This deep working is of the highest importance, m without it the grass will not bo able to insist the effects of dry periods which occur almost every summer. A week of hot dry Kimmei weather will be uf"ieient to dry up the graaa on a thin noil, whilst on a deep, well prepared soil, a whole month of drouth will fail to destroy the verdure. We have all seen frequent illustrations of this. This deepening of tho. soil wfi.l not only insure the safety of the griiss in dr- weather, but will promote the g i'th of nil trees, shrubs and plants t. t may be used in planting it. Th
