Letter from Nebraska. Lincoln, Nebmska, April 12, IS71. Mr. Elitor : Ijincoln, the capiial of Nebraska, is situated on a high, rolling prairie, and may be

fieen at a distance of from eight to fifteen- miles. The general appe trance of the couiKry is grand, but without variety. The city claims over 3,C00 inhabitants, which I think to be near correct. All trades and professions, and thi various kinds of business, are full to overflowing. I am safe in saying there is f ve times as much business here, as in Bloomington. Business houses, generally, one-s.ory frame. Hotels arc numerous ; four first class, tnnt run free busses to the Trains, and nine or ien second class houses, all loing a lively business. The- State House is a large, substantial structure, built of white limestone, and is the first to be s ?en of the city, when one is approaching. The State University is almost as large as two Indiana Universities ;

built of brick. The first term will j commence next September, and the President of this Institution, "away out here in Nebraska," is to receive $4,000 per annum. The Insine Asylum, situated two miles sonth--west f town, is built of stone, and cost the State $140,000. The I'eniteEtiary, is only partly finished, Swwever it answers the purposo at present. State lands will be in the nearket the 1st of May, for the r urpose of raising money for its completion. Churches are eleven in number, most of them commodious amd nicely finished and I am informed that all havegood congre gations. "The Great Salt Basins" of Nc"braska lie near the city, where the manufacture of salt is extensively carried on, with great success. The Buriington & Mo. Itailioad Terminates here at present, bui; is graded twenty miles west, and will

ibe completed, by the 1st of Novem"ber, to a connection with the U. P. : .at Ft. Kearney. The whistle of the j -engines, on the Midland Pacific can 3e distinctly heard, and that road j will run a tn in into Lincoln next week. Worit is to commence immediately on the Nemaha Va ley, Lincoln & Loupe Fork, and must be here this season in order to secure a large amount of bonds. The aove may go to show that Southern Nebraska is to be well supplied with Railroads. The Governor has the universal synpathy of the people of Lincoln. The people hire think his Impeachment will not be sustained.

It has been urged by many journalists of the State, that publication in the newspapers of all laws passed at each session of the Legislature, would result in great benefit to the people, as they would be well-informed upon their rights and liabilities under the law, and thus "saved much vexation and expense. The expenses of Courts, which have liecome so enormous, might also be curtailed through a general ki.iowl-

Conveiition. The candidates for Clerk were, J. Frank Fee and John C. Whisenand. Whisenand received 64 votes, Fee received 83 votes : For Treasurer Chas. H. McPhectcrs received 85 votes, and James M. Howe received 48 votes; For Marshal Frank Parker received 91 votcsi and David .13. Judah received 72 votes. Fee, McPhectcrs and Parker were declared to be the nominees of the Convention. Mr. Editor i The items of news arc very scarce with us this week. The dullest times of the year seems to have come suddenly upon us. The farmers have generally gotten their plows sharpened and all their farming utjusils in order, and are too busy to spend time in town. Success to "hem, for our bread and butter must come from their industry.
