House of Representatives b id under consideration a bill to protect; game, and in the discussion which followed, our Representative, Mr. Mitchell, is reported in his own organ, the Sentinel, as making the following dignified remarks: Mr. Mitchell. This bill, Mr. Speaker, embraces a matter of much interest to my constituents. Now, I am clearly of opinion tha; to protect game efficiently it don't go at it right. You propose to prohibit persons from netting quails, at any time of the year, but you cannet protect them in that way from the hawks. I contend that hawks kill icore partridges than all the shot .g jns and nets in the State, and if you want to protect partridges you must give a premium for hawk skulls. Laughter, That's what's tlisniatter. Renewed laughter. A Voice. "I will vote for a bill of that kind." Mr. Mitchell A good many persons don't know have no idea of the damage one flock of partridges will do on a farm. I have known them t destroy a field cf clover jiown in the spring. Among others, the Tan Yard School House claimed a large share of surprise. Several gentlemen of tho committee were standing in front of the Jail building on Saturday, and were heard to remark that "if the individuals who engineered that machine had taken the money for that Sheriff's residence and built a respectable school house, it would have reflocted credit upon ttair judgment." business. We may he mistaken, but infer that; the Gazette is one part Republican and three parts Democratic It is said that at Indianapolis, when an individual desires to know if ti e Senate is at work, he asks, "Is Judge Hugheh in session?" In fact it is openly asserted that the Senator from Monroe carries the Legislature in his breeches pockets. If the Senator's pockets are large enough, and he is 30 indifferent to the sanitary condition of his person as to fill them with the animal matter of which the present Legislature is composed, we can certainly urge no reasonable objection, But just imagine what a muss Ren. A New Work of Akt. Prof. J. S Conover, of Cold water, Mih., bus published one of the most useful and beautiful works of art which has ever been' presented to tbe public. of giving satisfaction to every one who may patronize him. During the recent "dry spell" he was idle five or six months, because iiis mill was intended for water power, but he has overcome that difficulty now, having introduced steam. Toll, one-eighth.

On last Thursday night the jew

elry utore of Mr. Brattin, in Green, castle, was burglariously entered,

and about fifty watches taken therefrom. The burglars entered by a cellar window, and reached the next floor through a register. They then picked around the lock of the safe, in which the valuables were kept, until thev got at the bolt, which they pushed back. Then opening the safe they extracted all the watches contained id it, and decamped. Next morning about forty of the watches were found near the North

Depot. It is supposed that, the burglars concluded they had too many watches to carry around with

out exciting suspicion. It is sup
