of the persons who answer the qties-

the value of their personal property, under the misapprehension that these figures are to be used for taxation. It i i difficult to understand how people who live in a reading age like this, can be so inexcusably iarnorant. The census reports are

only intended as a reliable source of i information upon the population,

business and wealth of the various counties and States in the Union. If this policy of suppressing the facts is as general in Monroe county, as our information on the subject leads us to believe, this county will make but an indifferent showing when compared with others. People at a dLstau3 determine upon a location frequently, jusfc as the census reports leads them to believe a county is settled or its resources

developed. mis suppression i farts is suicidal to our best interests.

"Told Yotj So ! The Bloomington Dimoorct of last Saturday contains the announcement of "Dick: Fulk," os a candidate for Sheriff, subject to the decision of the Democratic County Convontion. That Fulk may receive the nominotion, is the earnest wish of every Kt:publican in the County of Monroe.

The Tempehaxce Cause is gaining strength rapidly, if wc may

judge from the amount of beer and

whisky brought to Bloomington almost every day in the week. Last Saturday the freight train from the

north broueht in six barrels of

whisky ami twenty or thirty kegs of beer. As Sunday was not an extremely warm day, there was undoubtedly enough left over to supply the retail trade on Monday. One iay last week the city civil .engineer left his compass a short time, while he went to examine some stakes on North College Avenue. Just previous to his departure, however, the Professor had been drawing a bead on somethirg through his instrument, oblivious u the proximity of a huge hog, which was .grazing in an adjacent gutter. His hogship, it seems, had his curiosity aroused by the manner in which the machine was manipulated, so tossing his right ear off of hi eye, he took a careful survey of the surroundings ; and finding that the operator hud disappeared behind a neighboring grade, he walked cautiously to the "lopk-through-it," and climbed up. Thoroughly disgusted by tbchight of the engineer's stakes, or sonic such circumstance, he, with . a contemptuous grunt, kicked over the Professor's tripod, and then trotted down an adjacent allev. The result of this was, that

Our valued ($5) friend, James H. Rogers, came back from tho Circuit Convention, last Thursday, defeated for Prosecutor. He was a candidate for Common Pleas Praecutor, three weeks ago, in the Convention which was held at Franklin, Johnson county, but was defeated there. He was also defeated for the same office two years ago, at Morgautown. Jim now begins to know what he is good for, vii : To be defeated in Convention by his Party, for Prosecuting Attorney. If "the third time is the charm," Jim is politically dei.d slaughtered in the house of his friends.

Miss Belle Ryors has return

ed to Bloomington, and will give 'lessons in voeal and instrumental music to those desiring to receive them. Miss Ryors' musical ability is so generally acknowledged as to require no endorsement from ns. mThe Democracy lield a Judicial Convention at Spemier, on tr 2 7th instant, to nominate a Circuit Judge and a Prosecuting Attorney fir the Sixth District, com posed of Cla-, Greene, Morgan, Owen, Putnam and Monroe. "W. F. Frank lin of Owen county, was nominated for Judge, and John C. liobiaion of Owen re-nominated for Prosecutor.

The Railroad men-, formers and mechanics of Monroe c muty, should remember that John P. Smith, the Jeweler, is acknowledged to have no superior as a watth repairer, in the West. He sta nds at the head of his piofession, as he deserves to, and although he has au unusual amount of work at present in his shop, he i6 ready and willing to receive more. He is on the west

Don't suffer your hair to fall off, when a bottle or two of "Nature's

TnE 'Evening Mail, Maj. O. J. Smith's new paper at Terre Haute, is the latest and handsomest thing in the newspaper line. The Prairie City is well .supplied with elegant appearing newspapers, excepting the Journal, which, although fitted with new type and presses, is miserably rinted. "Bock" Hughes made a short speech, in the Court House yard, last Saturday, and was followed by John East, who took occasion to announce that he was a candidate tor tbi Democratic nomination to

the Clerkship. As John is Chairman of the Democratic Central Committee, and has everything "cut and

dried'' to secure his own nomination, this announcement was super

fluous, to call it by the mildest term. It is rather unusual, anyhow, for a

candidate for nomination by a County Convention, to make a

canvass of the county, in order to secure it. Williams of Stinesville, is the man that ought to receive the nomination for Clerk he has done uo imxmsiderable amount of gratuitous work for his party, and tieserves something. East is youug in the business, and can afford to

wait.

A HAru-STOHlCAL ISCIDINT. Last Saturday afternoon there was quite a crowd at Shoemaker 6: Co.'s Drug Store, a number of then buying the hair preparation known as ''Nature's;" Fullerton was hi.nding out the bottles rapidly with one baud, and with the other taking in the dollars. In his hurry to snatch a two dollar bill frcm a fellow who was owing the firm one hundred cents, he dropped a bottle of "Nature's Hair Restorative," and the clear, crystal liquid poured out in front of the rear diwr. Now, lin

gular to relate, thcte is a large hair rug, which grew in one night, on the spot where the Restorative soaked into the wood ! We don'l vouch for the hairy part of this story if you say we do, it i. a lie. Don't want every old wooden-headed fool in the country charging us .with all the huge advertising storhs they read. 3" For best bm.nds of Tobaccos and Cigars, go to Ilogers.'

An experimental turnpike is

talked of, in this vicinity, to be owned and managed by stockholders, who will depend upon tolls to repay them for the investment of their money. Many of the turnpikes in this State are paying dividends of from 30 to 50 per cent, to stockholders, and one road running out about four miles from Bloomington, would pay asi well as in any other part of Indiana. A good turnpike can be built at from 1,800 to $2,000 per mile, very little grading being necessary the road bed is the desirable thing. There is money in it, if moneyed men will take hold of the enterprise.
