A gentleman the other day stepped into tiie stcre of a Paris merchant, followed by a servant. The gentleman, who wore his right arm in a sling, was taken for a military pensioner, and the merchant gladly placed before him such articles as lie asked for. When he came to settle the account, however, he found he had not sufficient money, so he f.sked the morel ant to write a note
from his dictation to his wife, which he would send :o his hotel by his servant. The Merchant unsnspiciomily wrote as 1 e was desired, and on a sheet of paper barring the name of the tirm, tlese words: "Send, me immediately, by the bearer, 200 thalers. Yoiirs," Robert." He smilingly closed up the note with the expression : "Ah! then we are
jjaruesakes." The servant took the
note and sooa returned with the required sum. The gentleman paid for his wares, gave thvm to his servant to carry , tuul went away. Some hours afterfhe wife oftthe merchatit visited him, and after talking about sundry things, suddenly asked him why he had: sent fir tjiivtwp hubdred .tbakira. formity of the outlines,
Number one steps in. Perhaps he has just drawn up before the door, mounted on a load of wood or produce, and the following colloquy takes pi;ice: "Got any plug tobacco r "Yes." "Let'&.see it ; (takes a big chew) cut roe- off a dime's worth." The tobacco is cut off, as directed, when the customer walks off with the remark : "I haven't any money, bat am just going down town to sell my wood and will pay you as I come back." It is hardly necessary to state that the groeer never seiis him again. . Number tuo is a lady, and pursues a very similar line of preedare. She comes in and purchases a lamp chimney; then says, "l will just hand you this the first time I am passino 1 haven't the change now." The grocer, if he is a very modest man, does 1) of, in either of these eases, care to give expression to his opinion that anyperson, especially a ktdy, intends to swindle him forten esnts. So, being such a small matter, it is allowed fo go. The storekeeper frequently sees the lady' pass his establishment after that, but the matter of the ten 'cents' appears' never'again to occur to her. Number three pursues a somewhat different-course.. He is a gentlemanly appearing man, arid carries a great deal of "style.0 " He stalks in and calls for some first-class
"fine-cut." He is shown the article'!
and, by way of sitmple, lakes a
monster "chaw," then ejaculates;-!

jpile, a:ul eats it up by wav of
sample, then smacking- his lips, expresses his delight. They are just what lis wants. He. will" send his basket right around". But the wise grocer sets the apple down. 'to, profit, and loss ace jiinf, not expecting (o see his easterner's basket or money, and he is net disappoiuted. v Besides th-ssey there -is stiJJ another olassy'who trade witli'h grocer to small amounts -for some time, until friendly relations and confidence rre 'established. Thou he re-' quests credit, for quite a bill, saving he has' run': a little behind, but1 will settle Saturday night, : sure. The grocer is in doubt, buti'-fiiiftlly' accedes to the proposition. IStrtard ay :n i ght comes, ..but: ;.t he creditor does not; .an.l the upshot of the mutter is tliai the; grooer -finds he has not only lost the amount of goods for which he had trusted, Hit also al l his li ttle cashicustotn, which had before b-aen coining in so regularly ; while the customer has thrns' ferred his trade to another establishment, where the process is repeated.
