the ultimate fate of the' struggle was decided. It is settled, confirmed, demonstrated by an array of facts a thousand times greater than would have been demanded, had not the delusion been so deeply radicated in tiie bosom of society. The direful evils of intemperance are perpetuated, not by the degraded drunkard, not by the seductions of our saloons, but by the respectable and virtuous members of society, who use strong drinks as social beverages, and who thus uphold, patroni.c, and make respectable the fearful custom. The perversion of legislation in the State and the withholding of proper influence'in the Chrurch, both arosem great part, from the delusion that prevailed. That delusion was the Malakoff of the Rum Power. Not many years ago with here and there exceptions, this was the established creed of virtuous people. Men may innocently drink all kinds of strong drink, provided they do not become intoxicated. It may lie innocently used to excite the lagging energies of body and of mind. The mechanic and farmer may drink to give them strength ; the minister, thclf wyer.the poet mav drink to excite their genius,

nor distiller engage in this to make!

drunkards. Ihe legislator may legalize the traffic in strong drink, may tax the people to any extent to pay the enormous expenditure which intemperance occasions. This was th e

Look Ahka ). "Put money in thy burse" isonnd wisdom, as well as poetry. For the lust eight ytsirs people have been watching the fluctuations in the value of the mier which represented money in all the actual business and wants of life. But there is one feature of the printed pajier of whichneither "bulls" nor "bears" could deprive it: It was always a necessity, and money, or its representative, always will be; aud what ever may be its market value on the "street," it will always buy more or ios of the ueccssaries of life. Nothing etui take the place of money i;- this respect. It. is always convertible into meat and drink and eluhes, ind that is what can be s:id of no odsor article. For purposes of specukxions having an "uncertain"' value, for practical use it is always ceriiun. The aim cf every prudent man then should be aiwr.ys to have on hand a reserve of this ''miivcrsal solvent." If money fluctuates in its nominaal price or purchasing power, everthing else fluctuates too; and probably the thing called money is more stable in its value than anything else. Employment may be interrupted by illucss or by changes. Goods Wight and paid for may become unmarketable. But money is always ia request aud is never out of season. Therefore as we have said, it should be the effort of every man, whatever Ik? his income, to live within it, and thus guard against the contingency, which may come to any body, of being for a while without an, income.
