John P. Smith, the popular Jeweler and Repairer of 'Watches, finding t!iat the room he hud been occupying for several years past, was too small to" meet the re.OUireroents of his rapidly Increasing busi

With a commendable determination to oicol, Mr. Smith procured ti large, choice and attractive stock of Goods, including fine Jewelry, Musical Instruments, Clocks, and an assortment of American and Foreign Watches, ir.. silver and gold cases, seldom equalled in this -portion of the State, lie also secured the . Chips and Splinters. The MiUiners secra to be doing a lively and profitable business, Benj. McGee, jr. is attending Commercial College, at Louisville, Kentucky. Wilson Adams is a candidate for nomination to the office of Assessor, of Bloomington Township. Wils. would make a good one. Judge Eckels gave two full weeks of Circuit Court. No one has any reason to complain that he is indifferent to his duties. Yellow sun umbrellas, and hats appearing very much like a tied down palm leaf fan, are the rage this summer, for ladies. Don't forget the Mass Meeting next Saturday. Delegates to the Congressional Convention which is to meet on the 15th of June, will be appointed. . Dow Owens, a form er resident of this county, but now a passenger conductor on the Union Pacitic Railroad, is at present visiting his friends in this place. It is generally conceded by the State papers that the wheat crop, notwithstanding the efforts of the croakers, will be fully up to the average, if not a little in advance. The Grand Jury made it lively for the demi-monde, judging from the number brought before that body by the Sheriff and his assistants. The Cincinnati Shoe Store has been removed to the new room prepared for its reception. Mr. Bolcnbaebcr exhibits much taste and judgment in the arrangement and decoration of his new room. Ike Kahn made a flying vi-it to his old home last week. Mr. K. is "in real estate" at present. He can take care of himself in any kind of a transaction. Ho left us a XX. Thank you. Johnny Gore (everybody know? Johnny) is knocking around among the boys at home, for a few days. He is at present mrming an engine on the St. Louis and St. Joseph Railroad, Mo.

Chas. Yockey, of the Bedford j News, dropped in on us last week, and reports the Corporation of Bed- j ford to be in working order. Very 4od we mean both Corporation and Charley. A son of Milt. A Mrs. Duncan lectured upon female suffrage, last Thursday night, to a large audience, in College Chapel. An organization w;s effected and officers elected for Monroe county. The work on the new church

There will be a meeting of the citizens of Bloomington and vicinity, at the Court House, on Saturday evening next, at VJ o'clock, for the purpose of making arrangements for the Decoration of Soldiers' Grave-, on May .loth, IH"(. All are respectfully invited and urgently requested to attend, BY ORDER OF COMMITTEE. m m DIED, At the family residence, in this county, April lUli, 1370, Mrs. Rebecca Peterson, wife of Henry Peterson, in the G'Jd year of her age. The deceased was a kind wife, affectionate mother, and best of all a Christian. She gave a clear evidence of her preparation for the change she felt was drawing near. On Sabbath evening, witheut a struggle, she gently sank into the arm? of that loved and precious One in whom her heart confided for e ternal life. Farewell, dear mother, the loss we sadly feel, but we know it is your eternal gain in glory. May thy meek spirit, thy faith and love" rest wf:h us, and may we, like you, he prepared to depart at the Master's call, to meet in that hrig'it world where wo hope to greet thee in the beauty of Holiness, rejoicing ho torn God's Throne. K. D. Ed. Progress I heartily endorse the communication in last Saturday's Democrat, over the signature of "Observer," and insist that the "city fathers'' should see to the repairing of walks. If the property owners will net make necessary repairs, let the Trustees order it done, and collect the amount as provided by law. A very dangerous place for pedestrians, is the walk on 6th streetjopposito the Methodist Church property. It should be repaired, and at once. Tax-Payee.

And now conies the nev, styles of Ladies' Hals, among which are the "Grace," "Flirt," "Eva, ""Helen a," "Alpine," "Shoo Fly," and many others for Ladies, which can be had at Mrs. McCollough's Millinery Store. It is a matter of surprise to some people tli.it Tobe Smith sells so many goods the "some people" we refer to, however, are those who have never visited his store, and hence know nothing of his price?, nor of the extensive stock "ie keeps. Such a thing as selling Diamonds in ;i country town, was never dreamed of until Smith tried it. He sells them, and gives satisfaction, which is the mcst important feature of the business. Whatever may be thought or said of Hon. Wm, H. Seward, it is very certain he can make the neat

est and most effective speeches of

any of our public men. A few days since, a delegation from Syracuse paid their respects to the sage of Auburn, and during the interview Mr. Seward made a short impromptu address, closing wiih the model paragraph :

"Gentlemen, the first century of

our national existence is drawing to a close. While the seals of the

second are being opened, we shall be passing away. Relvinc

on the benevolence of God and the progress of humanity, let us hope, without doubting, that our successors will be wiser and better men than we have been ; that henceforth the reformer of the nation may never be found lacking in patience, the patriot in zeal, the soldier in prudence, or the statesman in constantly, and, above all, that the nation itself may not distrust its own gracious destiny, Amen."
