Indiana Her Growing Trade. CONTINUED, j The Paper House of CHANDLER & CO., Indianapolis. Paper is a very queer thing. Like many other reformers and wonderful things of this world, it frequently' comes into usefulness from very low places. In fact it seems almost to be a part of God's plan, perhaps to teach our human pride a lesson of humility, that almost all that contributes to the universal good, whether it be in men or things, must first come up out of what the proud world would call low places. The thoughts of the poor rag-pick-e: as he grove's among the filth of alleys, perhaps as a rule go no higher than the two or three cents
mention. These he claim& to sell at wholesale prices. Xow considering the savings in freights, one will perceive at once the advantage of dealing with Mr, Chandler. And then again another advantage that the dealer has in buying with this house ii to be found in the sav ing of time iu transmitting goods after tby are ordered. The intricate network of railroads that converge from nearly every part of the State to Indianapolis make it peculiarly advantageous to order from that ponrc, where dealers desire goods not obtainable at home. Mr. Chandler famishes another illustration of what patient perseverance combined with energy and foresight can aecorajilish. When he first started m the business, hit capital was small and his business did not occupy a room larger than an ordinary cigar store. But by close application, and being neither afraid nor asham jd to work hinjflejf, Jymilift basnet m through a series of years to its present position. From the start, paper bags and wrapping paper have been chief ieaturesiu his business. These, in connection with a few bundles of printing paper, were all that was to be seen in his store in the outset. One who is not acquainted with the steady purpose of the man, would have predicted failure. But with him it was a question of time, and steadily investing as his capital increased, he has now brought forth, one of the leading wholesale paper houses of the State, one whose business is becoming more and more extended as our people become the better acquainted with the roan. son therelrom ! After some inquiry, and of course some guessing, it is estimated that
last year alone there were sold in this State, near twenty million volumes. Of course this is only an approximate estimate. There may
nave oeen more, and there may have been less, but it will do for any purpose. Now add to these the two bund red and fifty-two newspapers and periodicals reported by Eowell's Newspaper Directory as published
in Indiana, then add the vast; amount of w rapping paper and paper bags used annually, and we can form a faint idea of the paper consumed. Heretofore the larger portion of this paper has been bought outside of the State. Of that used in books, perhaps ninety-nine per cent, has been brought into the
State printetl and ready for market. Now while we rejoice in the prosperity of the country, do not the interests of our State demand that we keop as much of this money at home as possible ? And especially so when we can do just as well, or perhaps
a little better than we can by send
