works, or when run at night double that amount. The first process is what is termed puddling Ihif. consists hi melting the iron ludarge furnaces, and stirring it until it becomes near the consistency of wax. In the mill there are eight of these furnaces. One mill will puddle a ton of iron in about eight hours. After the iron is puddled, it is taken from the furnace in large balls and thrown into a machine which very much resembles the mouth of an alligator, and which, in fact, bears the name. Here it undergoes a regular chewing process, the heavy jaws opening and closing upon it, while the attendant turns the lump every time the jaw opens. Under this process a fiery liquid runs from the mass, thus divesting it of much of its impurity. The proprietors are about putting in another machine to do the work. It is called a coffee mill squeezer. It comes from Pittsburg and will cost 2,000. From this squeezer the iron is taken to a machine which rolls it out into long bars. On the account of the water that is used to keep the machine from heating and the repeated rolling, the iron becomes cold, and it becomes necessary

to reheat it before the finishing

Isaac Galligar, of Westchester, Columjiiana county, Ohio, while eating a p ece of cake, last week, partially (wallowed a steel pin. A physician of that town tried, for a considerable length of time to ciscover its whereabouts, but could find nothing of it. He then got on a horse and rode in great haste to Alliance, eight miles, to procure the services of some other physician. Dr. R. P. Johnson, after looking in vain ibr it in the upper part of the throat, conceived the idea of inserting a very small horse-shoe magnet into the throat and pushing it down

as far as possible. To the magnet-

was attached a small cord, and upon withdrawing it, the pin was clinging to the magnet. On Monday a young man named Robert Webster, of Medina, Ohio, formed the acquaintance of a swindler on the train while on his 'aray from Toledo to this city, and when he r.rrived at the Junction he loaned the fellow all the money he had 122 taking as security what purported to be a U. S. bond and some spurious gold pieces. W hen the trian started from the Junction the swindler rose up and said that he wishetl to see some friends in an adjoining car, but as he disappeared through the door; Webster suddenly came to the conclusion that he had been robbed, and became convinced of the correctness of this theory a moment afterward, as he saw the borrower jump from the train. Webster started to leap from the tar, he was in, but was prevented by the conducter. As soon, however, as his story was told the conductor checked the train and let Webster off, and the latter gave chase and soon overhauled the thief, whom he compelled to refuael. Detroit Tribune.

It not only abounds in solid and useful information, but faithfully reproduces the most startling sensations of the gavest City in the world. It tells

us how the beauty and splendor of

the bright City have beeu purchased at a frightful cost of misery and suffering ; how virtue and vice go arm-iu-arm, and how the laticr is undermining all the sweet courtesies of social life ; and how most fearful crimes are committed and concealed. It tells us of high life and low life; of palaces and hovels; of the Emperor's family, and the workman's household. We mingle freely in the most magnificent and and dissipated pleasures, and drop an involuntary tear into the "Common ditches" where the poor sewing girl is laid to rest. All that has mt.do Paris the most beautiful and attractive City in the world, unite to make this book the most interesting we have seen for many a dav.

Spamsh-Americans like to call it.

Just now the usual dissensions in Mexico are varied by quiet preparations for a general revolution, and tae Congress is doing its share towards making ready, by suspending certain provisions of the constitution. That is the way they always do Make a constitution and carry out its provisions until some emergency .arises, or some one breaks the law,, then suspend it for a while until the matter settles itself or the offenders can be killed. It never seems to liave cntereed the Mexican's head that the constitution is the foundation of all law in a repubHcan government, that if it is not stable the superstructure cannot be firm.
