facts could be known even the best

informed among its would open their eyes with astonishment. How many who claim to be respectable, and some of them members of Church, will yet not scru pi 2 to use ''moderately'' at their homes, Wine, Ale. Beer and. other drinks, both of home manufacture, as well as those that have a large amount of Alcoholic poison in them. "What have such persons done with their coneeiense. How dare they give their sanction, and the weight of parental example in favor of this Drunkard Making practice. It is possible your sons may not be ruined by it ; the probability is that they will. If they escape, it will be in spite of the pernicious example and immoral teachings of their parents. Does it not seem unnatural that loving parents should consent, to lot the Devil use them in destroying both the souls an 1 bodies of their own children. As grievous a sin as this is, yet who, in the light of facts all around us, can say that tlii-s" is not so. Bear with me : I feel like insisting on the enormity of this crime, "Moderate drinkers," this would be respectable class arc doing more eilcctivelv the Devil's

work than any body else. You have the distinguished honor of preparing men for the Billiard Saloon and the Doggery. If you, jvho claim to be respectable, had not disarmed them of their fears, by the moderate us.e of it at home, thus taking away their shield and leaving them a more easy prey to temptation. Possibly they never would have entered on this broad way to ruin. But all moderate drinkers do hot confine their drinking to the honi" t i rcle. If I were to write the names here of some, who because they have not yet lost all self respect, "are drunken in the night" their cheeks would redden with shame, the hearts of Parents would grow sad and the eyes of trusting wives would iill with bitter tears. What a shameful practice is this dri iking whether it be little or much. Walk about Town these pleasant Spring days. Usually the windows and doors arc open. You

Ilockett.'s patent Drain Tile Machine, which is meeting an extensive sale in all parts of the country. The advantages elainied for this machine arc that it has no annoying complications of cams, friction rollers, &c, which cannot be reached without taking the machine apart, that there arc fewer wearing parts, less friction, and consequently less draft and liability to wear out, while the quality and quantity of the work are unequalled. It will be to the interest of parties contemplating tbs manufacture of Drain Tile to examine this machine before purchasing at a distance. This es'ablishment is also manufacturing an excellent Cane Mill, and also an Evaporator. Having been engaged in the manufacture of cane mills for number of years pt!.st, they claim to have availed themselves of all the improvements that their own and the public experience has shown to be of practical utili ty, and that they now have a mill, which for strength, durability end adaptation to the business is not surpassed by any in the country. They are making five different sizes of these mills. Their evaporator is Maulsby's patent. They are perfecting arrangements to make this justly celebrated pan more extensively. They ani also

from oil or gaseiline, takes fife and explodes the lamp. This never occurs when the lamp ie full and thet wick i& clean, as there is taen nr chamber in which the gas can accumulate ; but no matter what the quality of the oil, it will always accumulate when the lamp is partly filled. It is the heat that draws off the vapor from the oil, and if the wick is choked it has no means ol escape from the chamber of the lamp. If a lamp burns clear and bright, there is no danger of explosion ; but if it gives a bad light or smokes, it should be immediately extinguished. A recent explosion was reported to have occurred by extinguishing a lamp by blowing down the chimney. This is a common practice, and is accompanied by no danger with a full lamp, bu is always dangerous with a lamp partly filled or in bad working order. The flame is blown down into the chamber of the lamp, which may ba charged w'ith gas, and an explosioa is al n aps hazarded with a badly trimmed lamp. There is no doubt that an abundance of bad oil is manufactured, but i i. ... , t,ij ..

wno use the ou ts, that evotf geed oil may explode by" negligence in its use. Neither coal oil, ben?ine, nor gasoline will explode in liquid form, but only when subjected toa .suffieie Jt degree of heat to throw off a vapor which accumulates iu the unfilled portion of the lamp, and if thcflacie of the wick does not burn clear and bright, it hasno means of escae, and an explosion is always risked whenever a lamp is burned in such a condition. CONTINUED. Phoenix Machine Works Chandler j' Taylor, Indiananoli. This week wc shall devote oar spare space to the Phcenix Machi ie Works at Indianapolis. The relation which the manufacturing and perfection of niaeliineay bears to the growth of a State entitles them :o such a review.

In the year 1859 these works wereJ

first established, when afterwards, having iieen destroyed by fire, Messrs. Chandler & Taylor rebuilt on a large sca'c. They a;e situated about one sqmrc east of White river, ou West Washington street. In order to comprehend better what this honsa is doing, let us look through their establishment aud various kinds of machinery which they are manufacturing. The grew: speciality of the linn is a portable Muley Saw Mill, periled ed and patented by Mr. Chandler, in 1869. I; is not claimed i hut tl is is a mill of great capacity, suitable for extensive lumber operations, b it

one winch will cut lumber expeditiously and profitably, consielcrirg the small amount of power used and the number of hands employed. The mill s a light portable one, weighing about 5,000 lbs., which t an be taken opart and transport id from place to place on two-horse wagons, and set up for cutting in about two days. It can be propelled by a threshing engine oftenhorse power, and is capable of cutting 2,000 feet of lumber per d; y. Each mi 1 is furnished complete at the works, and competent mcu to superintend its erection. The mill

is admiri.bly adapted to the use of

tanners living ai a uiijta.jcu iiohi railroads where mills arc scarce, and lumber 1 as frequently to be hauled ten or fifteen miles, while the buyer has the best of saw logs on his own farm and perhaps a threshing

machine that will cut 120 shin tries

per minute. We will not weary our readers by going into details of the various pieces of machinery, which, with their grist mills, and machines and machinery used in woolen mills, paper mills, rolling mills &e., together with castings of every pattern that may be ordered, constitute a very extensive list. Our readers will see from the facts we have compiled, that

it is not necessary to go out of Iu

diana ior any machinery.
