that roads (turnpikes) arc needed in Monroe county, more thac, any other class of improvements. Farmers iiavo been unajlc to haul produce to town for many weeks, and at a time, too, when there wafi but little to do on tho farm, and at a season of the year when the prices for farm products, rule highest. Minyof our oldest citizens came from Kentucky and Tennessee, where turnpikes are built in. every direction from the county towns, and one would naturally suppose that these men must necessarily be advocate; of road building; but apply the tost, (a subscription pa per) and the belief is quickly dispelled. We have wasted a great many columns of space upon this subject, jkuL would willingly do as much more had we the faintest assurance that good would result ; but we have lost faith in the possibility cf awakening a progressive .spirit it-, the present generation, and shall make but limited efforts in that direction hereafter. The arguments aelduced by the anti-im-proveniint men are so original and unanswerable;') that there is but little hope of breaking their force, or converting their originators. An oild farmer objected to turnpike because the road bed being hard, would wear off tho tires of his wagon, And an anti-railroad man says that the use of so mxeh iron tc 'ay a track, would have a tendency :o advance the prioe of nails !
