Dreamt he dept like Kii Van 'V iiiklo ; S'cpt a hundred years and foi iy, Then .iwcfo to s-.-o the charges 'Time had wrought while he was sleeping. Then he saw the smoke e f cities. S:tw the lofty spires of chiv-ches Where he once saw hills and valleys, Grassy fields and wavy woodlaiuU. While he wop.der. d,'g:ud. and pondered, Rubbed his eyes ar.d guavt about him, Suddenly there fell a shidow All around him and upon him. And he heard a mighty rishing Through the quiet air abotre him, And tile soul of Yankev Foodie Quaked with fenr, almost orsook him When he saw a flying nonstor, Saw a bird of large dimensions Hover in the air above hi:n And alight down close bes ide bin . And with still inoreasir.g wonder Yankee Doodio now discovered That the monster vas no devil, Neither monster, bird, ncr devil, But a mighty car terial, Whereirf Itviiig. happy pjople Journeyed with a.l ease ind comfort, Free from dut and noise and raitle, Journeyed through the air of henven Over desert, e ver mountain, Over land, and over ocean. Merchandize he saw fiom Chi ta, And the almcnd eyed Celestials Swarmed in cloud? about the air ship, Greeting friends just not? arriviig Not a fortnight from :lc China. Fearing now no longer dangc, Yankee strolled among 1 he peop e, Feeling old and worn, and rusty, Altogether out of fashion In a world so strangely altered. Glad was he to hear the langu ige, Universal now to natiors, Of his lathers, of the En glish, Of the aneier t Anglo St. sons. And he lis-.ened to thi talking; Of the peopi j round about him, Heard, with still increasing wonder, Of the many curious changes Time had wrought while h: was sleeping. All the nations were Republics, And the mighty rod of empire Broken, lay where one it flourished. Many wires telegraphic, Bound "the continents together, And the language of the lightning Was employed by Uncle .Samrt 1 In the new style postal service. And he saw long tubes pneuTiatie, Stetcain- hither, stretching thither, Over land and under vater, Whereby goods of all descriptions Carried were with speed and safe-.y. Yankee Doodle stared and won leied, Felt himself almost a ;igrny. Mid these giant sons cf knowledge ; Still he knew that he was mortal For he felt the pangs of hunger ; But the houses had no kitchens And the women were too busy, Politics and law discussing, Talking little party secrets, Betting on the Fall elections -And on other little matters, To attend a weary stianger, Or direct him to the palace Where co-operation furnished Victuals cooked in height of fa.'hion. Stumbled he, as luck would have it, On this palace, where his hunger Found a respite in a dinner, Dinner that would rouse the envy Of the wife of Yankee Doodle. When at night the streets w(e lighted Yankee saw, with grsat amazement. Flaming, blazing all around him, Lights thtit banished all the darknsss And the modest mocn outrivaled; And he learned froit. those about him That the light was made from .vater.
Weak and weary with sight-seeing, Musing sadly on tho wonders Time had wrought while he whs slcepirg, Yankee slept again, and waking Found with joy tha . he'd been dreamirg; Saw tae Steamboat, heard the lattie Of the cars and locomotive. Smelt the steam of cooking victuals, Of his breakfast ir. the kitchen ; Saw no almond eyel Celestials, Saw the waving f eels and woodlands, Where ir. dreams be saw but cities; Found that women were not voting, Were no: wrangling politieiars, But presided o'er the houschol 1, Spunked the babies rocked the cradle, Made themselves ii. all things useful. !No more flimpsis f the fiitiuo Came in visions, sb-ep disturbing; For the present ho was thankf.d Thankful too for h s surroundings, That be still was Yankee Doodle,' That he ntill his place was holding With the great lords of creati m.
home as elsewhere. Jy the word: home, we mean Indiana. Our attention h:t..s been called to the rnpidly growing, and already t'Xtenslve watch and jewelry Ikis'iik-as of our .St;te, by the opening t' the new and eotnmodiou.-s jewelry emporium of Craft it CiiUer, at W :M East Washington Street, Indianapolis!. The senior member of the firm, W. II. Craft, commenced in Odd Fellows M idi, in the spring of IMil. where for several years he earned on a successful business. Subsequently, he removed his stru'k of
goods to a large room on Pennsylvania Street, where he could better accommodate his growing trade. In September last, he lctused the
imnieei' iewelrv room of the oitv Inevitable.
the one formerly occupied by Y Tulbolt it Co., thus placing himsel:' in tt position to present to vlv: ptople of the State one of the handsomest
jewelry stores in Indiana. After refitting this commodious room throughout, in magnificent style, he was enabled to enlist with him in the business, Mr. II. P. Cutter, of Chicago, to whom he sold u had"
interest. Mr. Cutter is a practical watchmaker, and was formerly cmuc-ted with the American Watch Company, Waltham. Mass.. where for throe
years he had charge of the man.i-i "fixture of the fine Appleton & Tracy movement. With th ,s knowledge, he is certainly an invaluable auxiliary, to a firm which is seeking to extend its business over the State. Both members of the firm have the necessary prerequisites fo:r the suceessful aecoinplishmtnt ci ':his work. Each has had an experience of over fifteen years in the business, and as we said" in the outset, we can see no good reason why they should not be able to supply the demand for such articles as well as any ho ise in the West. As the wealth of the Suatc increases, and our people aeeumuhtej the demand for all kinds of good.-
of this description will increase, and
then too, in this ::.gc, when ntin.ttes count more than hours did in the century past, every live man especially the man of business needs something to indicate the
ilight of time. In othei words, he wants a first class watch . If we had our way, our people vrould buy none hut American VVaiches. But whether they may want the American, or that of some Europeaii Manufactory, Messrs. Craft iS; Cutter an fully prepared to furnisli anything
of iho kind the trade may ckii.and.
As we approach the store irom the street, one is struck with the magnificent show window which we
think is by far the most remarkable
in the State. The front is one large
French plate glass, which presents a surface of seventy square feet. Behind this maaimoth plate of glass there are two other glasses, each with a surface of twenty -eight squarefeet. These two glasses have a mirror at the base, thus giving a beautiful effect to the rich goods displayed within. The interior of the room has been handsomely decorated, beirg ornamented with the gold finish in the most approved style. The counters, five in number, are painted white with delicate pink paneling, giving a pleasant effect to the other finish of the room. Each one of the counters is mounted with a riel: silver show case, in which may be found a vast variety of fine work, ea;braci ng pins, rings, in fact, n general assort
ment of the finer classes of iewtlrv.
Xow that the Fifteenth Amend-' aient is ratifies and Lnpurtial Suffrago irre vocal ly established, a certain political party will have to transfer its opposition from this specific measure to the general principles whi.h the measure repi"sents. The ( Honing would make a good platform for them in their present condition : liixolvetl. 1. That we indignantly protest against the Spirit of the
Age. 2. That, we utterly deny and ignore the Logic of Events. o. Thai, hereafter as heretofore, we will marc'.i steadily and irrresistiblv backward, leaving an unnleas-
