Personal. A lively competition, wc learn, will be had for the County Offices in the adjoini'.ig county of Lawrnnce, but whatever disposition may be made of others who are serving their first term, we earnestly hope that
the Republicans of that county will recognize the worth of one of their public servants, and consult their own best interests by placing him in nomination for a second term. We refer to our vah eel personal friend, Charles T. Wooi-KOt.k, the present Auditor of Lawrence county. Mr. W. was, for many years, the Deputy of Geo. P. T'noiiN'TON, Esq., while that gentleman held the oflice of County Clerk, and to his Deputy belonged much of the popularity of Mr. Thornton'salministration. Mr. Woolfokk's superior ability in all that goes to mak3 up the competent clerk a correct accountant, a fine scribe, the gift of systematizing are conceded by every one at all conversant with the subject. Even his enemies if he has any must admit that no more competent man has ever filled the position of Auditor. Last summer Mr. Woolfomc was
appointcel as Delegate to the State Board of Equalization, from this Congressional District. He discovered, upon .arriving at Indianapolis, hat this District was in an unenviable condition thfit in almost every instance the appraisers-of 1804 had 'added on more to their '"'Improvement column," and as a consequence, taken from their "Land column." Boards of Equalization, previous to this, hael looked only at the "Land column," and it was with considerable difficulty that Mr. W. succeeded in getting a rule established that when a county made showing of a reasonable increase, whether in the '-Laud," "Improvement," or "Lot column," she should not be tlistifrhed. To this action is due the fact that but two counties in this District, (Owen and Vermillion) had the ratio of appraisment increased. Lawrence and Monroe, through the operation of this rule, stood as equalized by the District Board. Our District was- benefitted by the action of the State Board in another particular the increase of acres over the equalization of .18(54 which increase being of swamp, school and other lands of the e:haractcr g.ve us more to tax and made the aggregate amount less. The following; tabic shows the increase : Increase of acres over 186-t:

As one ot the most
and industrious 'members of the State Board of Equalization, Mr. Woolfouc is entitled to much praise for these results.
