The very idea is preposterous. Then!
why suffer one man in a jury of twelve to hang it, and to compel the other elev.cn to lay around upon benches all day and night and finally to prevent a verdict by forging a disagreement'? Competent jurors can't afford to sit upon juries, in view of the fact that the c'.iances are that one or two bull heads will be rung in by :he weaker side, expressly to hang the jury. Men of business can't afford to k so their time in this way. Great fraud and corruption cxiiitsin onr jury system. We doubt if enc decision in-twenty

The conviction is beginning to dawn upon the minds of the ad vocates of cheap labor that John Chinaman can not be relied upon. Mr. Walker, who recently brought out a number of Chinese laborers for Texas, is of the opinion that bat few Chinamen will expatriate themselves for a series of years except on condition of receiving such high, wages as. surely will enable them to return home in comparative affluence. He further says.be is confident no reliance can be placed upon obtaining and retaining Chinese labor for agricultural work, except at the wages of the country where 1 a bor is performed. John is no fool, and is as fond of filthy lucre and as
crafty in getting and holding on to it as the "Melican man."

The account;; of Coolc, taken in connection with his recent villk.uv, leave no doubt
that ho is a deiilievate, eolel-blooded scoundrel, and that no palliation of his oik-use on the score of mental affection, or use of liquor, or opium, can be. urged. Since the above was put i;n type, Cook has been arrested. The. fellow was interviewed in bis cell by, a re-

The general belief is now that Mbs Johnson was a young religious enthusiast, and that Mr. Cook bail acquired that singular spell-poweir over her which, as is well known, often results frcm the development of an almost fanatical degree of socalled religious artlor. There is also reason to susK!ct that the young girl had the mis fortune not to have concealed from him the existence of this fascination which ho exer
cised over her acts, arid that in a moment of semi-infatuation, or, perhaps, of a light insanity, brought on by great mental agitation, he requested her to fly with him, and
she blindly assented. John McCoole, brother of the illustrious pugilist, has fought his way into the Miunesota Legislature, without any special, training for the ring. When a Mormon is ssent abroad on recruiting service, Brigham appoints a man to act as brevet husband until his return. Tf the wives are good-look i lg, Brig, appoints himself. In the early day of Western emigration, an intelligent irishman,, known as Pat Doogan, settle:! on the Kentucky side of the Ohio river, where he built a little dock

It was soon shortened into "Pat Doogan's," then into 'Pailoogau's," and finally to the euphonious name which now appears on all the maps, Paducah. is right. Mr. Hannegan was arrested for that offense, while Mr. Hanna was taken in for being in bad company. This is the story as we heard it. Jiict. Mirror. A greenhorn sent a quarter of a dollar to an Eastern swindler, who advertised that he would teach any one, sending that sum, how to write without using either ink or pen. "The Good Old Times." We often hear, and all of us frequently quote with a sigh, how much nicer everybody- and everything used to be i.3 the "good old times," of a good while ago, than they are now in these degenerate tlays of 1870. We notice in the New York Tribune a paragraph which by the way is copied mainly from Adam Clark's commentary on Matt. xx. :) from which it wonld appear that the good old times were cot worth recalling. It states that before the discovery of America, money was so scarce that the price of a day's work was fixed by act of the English Parliament in 1351, at one penny a day ; and in 1314 the allowance of

A young lady in New Harmony, boasts of twenty-seven matrimonial engagements, fractured by her in five
years. She has a lona' string of
engagement rings hanging' up in her boudoir and points to the m with a feeling of prtle akin to that which animates the breast of a "noble red man," when he shows off his collection of sejaips. On Saturday morning, 8th inst., the residence of Murray Briggs, editor of tho Sullivan Democrat, and County Auditor, was entirely destroyed by fire. The loss is probably twenty-five hundred dollars. twenty-four eggs were sold for a
penny, a pair of shoes for four pence, a fat goose for 21 pence, a hen for a
penny, wheat three pence per bushel, and i fat ox for six shillings and
eight pence. So that in tnose days, a day's work would buy a hen, or two dozen eggs ; two day's work would buy a pair of shoes, and a fat
ox cost eighty day's work. On tbc whole, human labor bought in the
average, about half as much food, and perhaps one-fourth as much cloth or clothing as it now does.
Vv e Know of no one who wants to work a whole day for a fat hen or two dozen eggs. A good story is told by the Attica Ledger of a physician of that place, who was called upon to visit a sickman, after he had, himself, taken a drop or two too much, arrived at the bedside, he fumbled over his patient a little, and at last got hold of kw own puke, which he selt for a little bit, and then, with customary medical gravity remarked, "Well, there's nothin' much matter wt you only a little drunk ! Jis go t' bed 'n sleep little n you'll b' all right.:" On the 8th insL, Israel Price, while eugfiged in loading some fodder upon a wagon, fell from the :?ame to the ground, striking upon ids head, causing a dislocation of hit- neck, and of course, immediate death.
