GOLD DECLINED!!! So have Goods, at Dunn & Co's. We have now on hand and for sale, the largest nnd best selected stock of Groceries, Glass and Queensware, in the city, to which we desire to call the attention of all persons wanting good in onr line. Call at the corner of Sixth and Railroad streets, price our Goods, and see '.ho results of our late purchase. DUNN & CO.

Defying competition is Shoemaker's "best hold." He has defied it now, until he has knocked all of the profit off of stationery , and the next thing we hear upon the subject he will be charging live cents for an nvelope box, and will "throw in" Ave hundred envelopes just for fun.

This is undoubtedly a good time of

year to buy stationery, and the people are taking advantage of it. m n The largest stock of Groceries iu Town, At Dunn $ Cos.

9Sf Smith & Cochran have more goods in their finely frescoed rooni, than any otlitr firm in this section's too many, in fact, for this season of the year, and they have determined to reduce the stock, if, to accomplish that end, they are requir

ed to take less than cost for half of

their goods. "This true," go to Milton J. Smith with 5.00 in your band, and 'he will give you 10.00.

125 bushel: of Clover and Timothy Seed, at Dunn $ Cos. , Smith (John P.) is as busy as a bee, at present. He gives such universal .satisfaction that persons who have watches that need repairing, bring them to him atid wait, some of thenj, weeks till their turn comes. One reason why he is delayed with some ol his work is, the people come into the store every hall hoar, to buy watches, diamonds, gold pens, and fine jewelry, of which J.P. has an abundance.

Th Bailiroatl Tax. A few persons living and owning property oif of the line of the proposer East.nnd West Railroad, ob

ject 1.3 aiding it by a general county

tax, because they say it will not benefit them, and that those only who ire benefited, should be taxed. Ii: this they are mistaken, it will benefit every man in the county large y. There U scarcely a farmer in Monroe county who will not, immediately after the building of the road is assured, ask from three to five dollars, more per acre for his land and get ready sale for it but will not be benefitted, they tell us, by 1 tie building of a road. Xo public i mprovement can be made in a county, which will not be largely beneficial and profitable to all its people. Property near bridges,! urnpikes, and like improvements, become more valuable than that ten or twenty miles distant, yet these disj. tut farms are made more acces-

sioi'J ov ail sucn improvements, ana

becoiae enhanced in value. The people of Bloomington are taxed to build bridges in distant townships, and with as much propriety they might object to paying these taxes becai.se they arc not directly bei:.e itted by the building of bridges in Indian or Clear Creek townships. If the people of the county are opposed to voting a Railroad tax th;;.t will benefit every man in it, will tho people of the townships through which the road is intended to ran, tax themselves to benefit outside townships? We think not. m c!u.;ar at 14c per lb, at Dunn .j Cos. m There is muck anxiety upon the pert of many persons, to learn who tin:! candidates for the various county offcts are, and we have heard it inti rna .ed that their name is legion.

This we are inclined to doubt, as bt:.t few announcements have thus

fa:: been made, and it is fair to pre

sume that men who earnestly desire

nominations aro not too modest to

Tho Mass Rlcclling-. We trust that the Republicans of Monroe county will no1: forget or neglect to attend the Mas; Meeting at the Court House, in this place, on Saturday, 2'th inst. Tho meeting is not called f di: the purpose alone of appointing delegates to the State Convention, but the most satisfactory manner of nuking nomi nations will bo decided upon, a Centre! Committee will 1)3 selected, and an effort made to effectively organize! the Republican Party, so that good work may bo done in all. the Townships. It is to be hoped that no long-winded speeches will be indulged in, but that it wilt be purely a business meeting, participated in by large delegations from every township in the coun ty.

A Kcw "Soldier's Friend."

The Bloomington Democrat of

last Saturday, sheds bitter tears over the fact that the Federal offices in Monroe county, Assessor and Collector, and the Postoffice at this place, arc not filled by soldiers. The writer then asserts that the lawyers who collect the pension and bounty money of soldiers, allow the largest portion to ''stick tc their fingers. 7 Jim Rogers, the individual who proclaims in public that; he is "the responsible editor of the Democrat " held the office of Re venue Collector in this county, for some time, under the Johnson administration. Is he a soldier ? Rogers also practices law, and does a little iu the bounty and pension business. Does he plead guilty to letting the "largest portion of the soldier's pension stick to his fingers? ' We have no doubt that the soldiers will feel gratified to learn that they have a champion in the Democrat. Dan. Voorhees

is also a friend to the soldier. Dan. will, doubtless, be a rvarni friend :o the colored man, next Fall, if the I5th amendment becomes a lav,ar d then we may confidently expect to read moving appeals to the colored Democracy, in the Bloomington Democrat.
