Fur beauty of typography, artistic engravings, nnd high-roned literary articles, together vith a larjc :md beautiful display of the Fashions, 'Demorcst's Monthly Magazine" is certainly unsurpassed. The January number, just received, in addition to unusual holiday attractions, has a fine steel Portrait of both Mr. and Mrae. Demorest. Mr. Allen Ross, the agent and warden cf the Auburn, N. Y. prison., received a will this morning bequeathing property to the amount of $32,000 to a convict named William R. The jollieot fellow we have heard of in many a day, is a Cincinnati rough named Hargan, who had a little diversion Christmas night with one of his boon companions. The telegraph tells the story quite as well as we could tell i t :

six months. He has served six months only, and will no doubt rest uneasy for the coming two years,, in ! view of the anticipated enjoyment of the sudden and unexpected amount of property falling to him, Great horror has recently been expressed in Bacchanalian circles?, at an item of information in the Internal revenue report?, concerning slii iulating fluids. At Cincinnati, 42,000 barrels of "Saloon washings" are re-distilled every )'car, yielding about two and a half gallons of newspirits each. The slops bring about 2 per barrel. We do not know why re-distilled, bar-room slops, should disturb the equanimity of tough old absorbers, who have been so long complacently imbibing strychnine, belia-donna, cocculus indicus, sugar of lead, and other chemicals, which lend such a fascination to the sparkling and rosy beaker. The rc-dfctillcd rinsings arc not particularly dirty, we presume, until they have been doctored, find need no more trouble the stomach than foreign wines trodden o.it hy the unwashed feet of Spanhsh ox German peasants.

The New York Times heartily commends a bill introduced into the Hon fie by Mr. Thayer, which proposes to amend the Homestead laws so as to require the planting of trees o;i homestead settlements. There

can be no doubt that the effect of

such a measure would be uo benefit the country immensly in the course of a few generations. In districts where timber is scarce we would b living up wealth lor posterity, at small co.t or trouble to ourselves, by planting trees to say nothing of thesheltcr which would bi afforded lor cattle, and the picturcsqnoness which would be added to every landscape. The last point may f?ecm of small account, but most people prefer to have their houses pleasantly situated, and nothing improves a homestead more than trees.

A fatal accident occurred in the

blacksmith shop of Mr. Hilder brandt, on Christmas day, at Monti

the thimble off a broken axle, for which purpose he was holding it in the fire, when an explosion occurred of so forcible a character as to drive the fractured axle into his bowels. He died in a few hours, leaving a wife and three children. The accident is supposed to have been the result of an explosion of steam

generated in a cavity in the end of

The present condition of financial affairs can only be relieved by the enlargement of the volume oif currency in the country, and it is expscted that Congress will take up this subject immediately after it reassembles.
