Effect of Railroads on the Weather. The opinion seems to be gaining strength that the Pacific Railroad is working great change in the climate of the plains. Instead of continued droughts, all along the railroad, rain now falls in refreshing abundance. This result has been remarked upon in other sections of the West. In Central Ohio, for example, it is said, the climate has been completely revolutionized since iron rails have formed a net-work all over that region. Instead of the destructive droughts formerly suffered there, for some four or five years there has been rain in abundance even more than enough to satisfy all the wants of farmers. This change is thought to be the result of an equilibrium produced in the electrical currents, which has brought about a more uniform dispensation of the rain. It is a fact within the observation of all who remember ante-railroad times, that we have now few, or no, such thun-
der storms in New England. The tance with the dog, and had no.liiiig iron rails which touch and cross each to expect from him, yet he did him other in every direction, serve a;; a favor for the simple s;.kc of doing conductors or equalizers of the elee- good to n, fellow creature. It m ofef ten years since, old John Brown, of Osawatoraie, wich a fo-
lovvino; of twenty-one men, whites
and blacks, made u is mad attempt to excite insurrection iu the United States and create a Government for the abolition of slavery. On the night of October 16, 18-9, he seized Harper's Ferry. On the following night, a force of one hundred United States marines, with two pieces of artillery, commanded by Col. Rolert. E. Leo afterward General-in-Chief of the rebel army compel led him to surrender, all bleeding and
.hacked with bayonets. On the 31st
or October, looa, Jirown was convicted of treason, conspiracy And murder, and on the 2r.d of Deeembci. following, he was hanged at Cliarifstown, Va., amid a jwmpous thow of Virginia milttia culled out by the redoubtable Governor Henry A. Wise. Nothing was gained by Virginia, or the South, or the cause of human slavery, by the hanging of John Brown. It was one of the many mistakes that the Southern poli
ticians made, in their efforts to resist tht: march of civilization. ' Browa might have been punished by imprisonment or he might have been magnanimously pardoned, and, in either case, public opinion would have been influenced favorably toward the South. But Virginia and the whole South were thrown into
such a panic by a crazy undertaking
oi I3rovn and his htuc party, that nothing would satisfy them but his blood. The petty affair, which could have been put down by a squad of experienced jjolicemeu, was magnified and even glorified by the consternation it created, and by the, tragic termination that was given to it by the melo-di-amatlc politicians of Virginia. The little tragicomedy of Harper's Ferry and Chciflestown was made the prelude or prologue of the tremendous politit.l and military tragedy of the Southern rebellion. The common nanio, John Brown, became exalted as if it were the name of a saint as well, as of a hero. Through four long years of civil strife it was a watchword and a rallying cry for the soldiers of. the American Republic. In public meetings, in parades, in camps, in bivouacs, and in advances to bloody battles, the idea that the soul of John Brow was "marching on," while his body was "mouldering in the ground," was a reap source of inspiration, especially with the common soldiers. The history of that strange chant of the Union troops ought to be written, if taere is any one that knows it. The quaint old negro melody, with its refrain of "Glory, hallelujah I" is familiar enough. But how, or when, or by whom, it was applied
to the fate of John Brown, antl made a hymn that was the real
