A Brooklyn lady availed herself of this euphaism, recently, to get released from the penalty of petty larceney, and found it successful with the complacent judge. No phrase has been devised to excuse the thiefts of poor victims of hunger and cold when driven to desperation,

Mortality Among Presidents. There have been fifteen persons elected by the people to the office of President of the United States. Of this number the present incumbent is the only survivor. It is true that Messrs. Fillmore and Andrew Johnson, who were chosen Vice Presidents and became Presidents by the death of their chiefs, Taylor and Lincoln, are still living. This is extraordinary mortality. The first President Gen. Washington, died while the second President was in office. We are glad to l lieve rhat the
hitter prejudice which has. heiefco-
fore been lelt against female pLysi-
eifms, is rapidly di.'iap)caring, anl that they are now udmitted to the

medical colleges. lhe ability of.
woman to master nil tbe rajuire-
ments oi tlie prohtssioa, is not to be questioned. Hcr adaptation for
it, however, must be practically de
monstrated. If it is found that her sex is a barrier in the path to successful practice, her knowledge will
prove no less valuable in the hospi
tal than at the beds? tic. As advan
ced stiience teaches tss to discard the
uae of noxious drugs, and to rely more upon the curative powers of
nnture and the kindly oliiccs of the
n-irse, it may be that tiie gentle h and and moral influence of woman peculiarly adapt her to the practice of medicine. Whether she pro res .successful or not, credit is cortainly due those colleges which have given hcr the means of putting th-,2 question to a practical test.
