Editorial Respomibllity. In reply to our remark lust week with reference to ttao quest loc lis to who doe the writing for the Xsn m t, that shct of Saturday contained the following: "There is usually a column or tvo of handbill typo in tho J-Vejw.'M which looks ns th.-nsh. Gabe, who does it all himself, every time, wo can sot see how th? world at la -ge is any bettor or any worse off in eoiiseqi eneo. It n ;vcr occurred to a; to form u oonjc cturo in r r:ird to the matter. Wo won Id m- soon
think of concerning rursolves, about what Mr.Gabe had for breakfast, or the probable length of his nethermost garment.' We beg leave to differ with this writer as to the importance f editorial identity The i public naturally desire to know who is the editor of a paper, and there is just a.-; much propriety in his manner if writing i i itm"bush, as there would be iiv ft preacher" conduct, who, with a screen placed before the pulpit, would lecture the people, week after week, without miking himself offeially known. Our inquiry was couched in Tory respectful language, nor did we descend to such vulgarity lis is implied in the 'nethermost garment' sentence. The writer also finds f.uiit with the typa in which our paper
is set. If the article was written by Mr. Pursel, we have only 1 1 sny that we could pi int our paper on new type, every week in the year, if we were to buy mate rial on his plan. If James II. Rogers, claims the article's authorship, ve can state for hU benefit, that we would be better able to buy new type, if he would come forward like a man, and pay over the $5.00 given him by his client, W. G. KasU-n of Stiucsvi le, two years ago last August, as our fee for publishing a liquor license notice, the facts in which ca.se, lie acknowledged some months ago, in the Clerk's office, while S. By the way, the reason why we are crowded with job work is, because wo generally manage toriVe satisfactim. "Wo have never heard of our customers burning up their ;obs and going elsewhere to got them pritiei. TUe Elections Tuesday. New York. The Herald says '.he returns of our State indicate the success of the Democratic State ticket, but the Republicans have a working majority in the Legislature. The Democrats lose heavily in the eitv, but the- Republicans lost
heavily throughout the State, the
election has gone by default on a

October elections. In this city the vote as compared with those of last! year, shows a Democratic loss of over 2o,()00, and a deficiency in the aggregate veto of nearly 40,000. To sum up the general results in the State, they will signify practically little or nothing without a chan ge
in the Legislature, which, according to our latest returns, anncars to be
more strongly Republican on joint ballot than the last.

A very commendable act upon the part of the Board, and one that might be imitated with credit to Boards, as veil as profit to scholars and parents, in mfiuy tovns. If such an officer becomes proverbially unpopular, by reason of hi.; partiality, his hoMxes, or by crar lining a dozen studies upon ehildron who cannot, in the nature of things, do justice to three, or by changing the school books every term, his usefulness is, to a great extent destroyed from these causes, and ha should be lopped off just as an orehardist would cut out a dead limb from a growing tree. And the people who pay the taxes, have a right to demand such reform, if they have rights which sometimes does seem doubtful.
