Calisaya or King';, E'atk was unlnovn until the middle of the 17th century. Humboldt vifiketi favorable mention cf its febrifuge qualities as an antidote to Fever and Ague, Intermittent and Malarious Fevers, in his extensive South American travels. In 1640 it was used by the Jesuits, who alone at that time possessed the secret of its wo lderful tor.ic properties, and it wa;s sold by them for its own weight in silver. In 1653, eighteen years af:.?r, Sir John Talbot emp oyed it with great nuccefs in France in the treatme it of Fever and Aue, Dyspepsia, Nervous Affections, Ldhs of Appetite, Weakness and Debility, Palpitation of the Heart, Diarrhoea, etc. In 1679 he sold the secret of its origin to Louis XIV, by whom it was divulged. It is now the all important ingredieit in Drake's PLANTATION BITTERS, and preserved as it is in pure St. Croix Ru n makes atonic of rare merit, and one that should be upon the side-boan. of every family. Messrs. P. H. Drake & Co., the sole proprietors of the celebrated PLANTATION BITTERS, are the argest importers of Calisaya Bark m America. The Earl; is cathered and cured under the immediate supervision of an agent sent out to 3razil, expressly for "hot purpose, and aside frcrn a few thousand sounds which are sold to trie manufacturers of Quinine, is all used in the prepa-ingof these Emitters, to which they are indebted for their wonderful success a:, a tonic. gkThe above cut represents the natives in their own native forest .gathering the Bark.
